Sierra. Prison. The words didn’t feel real. Chloe’s hand rested gently on my shoulder. “You’ve been quiet,” she said softly. “What’s wrong?” I forced a smile. “Just work.” She narrowed her eyes. “You’re lying.” I sighed. Of course she knew. “It’s Sierra,” I admitted. “She’s in prison.” Her hand fell. “Prison?” I nodded. “She’s been living a double life. She’s a jewel thief.” Shock flickered across her face.

A ghost who was guiding my hand from beyond the grave. I picked up the book. It was an old copy of The Master and Margarita. My favorite. Our favorite. Of course. I ran my thumb over the embossed cover. This was it. The weapon. The key. I tucked the book and the letter into my jacket and walked out of the vault, my head high. I was halfway across the marble floor of the bank lobby when I saw him.

I nodded slowly, realizing what his answer truly meant: the Living Book wasn't here. Whether he didn’t trust me, or the danger was too great to carry it along, I didn’t know. But I stopped searching. Instead, I buried myself in the small cube Zevarion had gifted me, fingers working it restlessly as I tried to anchor my thoughts in the memory of his warmth, his arms, his voice. Each night grew colder. Each morning, darker. And then, on the eleventh day, just as the book had warned, we reached it. The horses slowed, snorting uneasily. Even the wind stilled, as though the very earth held its breath.

The quiet librarian? The proxy bride? The girl who bleached her soul to save a library?

They looked very old. I picked up the first book. The cover felt soft under my fingers. I opened it carefully. The writing was faded in places, but I could still read it. "My name is Althea of Whitemore," the book began. "This is my story." Althea. Who was Althea? Was this Noah's and Neal's grandmother? Why would her book be hidden here? Why would my locket open her secret room? I turned the pages slowly, my eyes growing wider with each sentence.

He unwrapped it slowly, then placed it in her hands. A necklace. Simple, but beautiful. A tiny charm shaped like a flame hung from the center, made from some kind of glowing amber. The moment her fingers closed around it, she felt it—warmth. A pulse. Like it was alive. “It belonged to the last Fireborn,” he said. “She didn’t survive the war that came.” Evelynn looked at him sharply. “What war?” “The kind that hides in shadows,” Aiden said. “Not with armies or flags. With whispers. With blood. And with monsters.”

Jaden walked into my bathroom, then he looked through the window. “A mother and children used as metaphor could only mean a tree. Yes he’s talking about the tree at the back of this building” I darted off to the tree, I saw the Kitchen head walking close to that tree. I ran but she picked the book. “Now handover the book to me” I ordered in a tensed voice. “Here you go ma’am” She gave me the book and continued walking. I sighed out of relief. I quickly ran and got petrol. Soaking the book in it, I used a lamp to light the book. It burned, I saw black shadows disappearing into thin air.

After a brief scolding from my teacher, I was sent to assist the librarian. The library was a sanctuary of towering shelves and soft whispers, its grandeur unexpectedly breathtaking. The scent of aged books and polished wood wrapped around me like a comforting cloak. Wandering through the aisles, I stumbled upon a dimly lit corner that exuded an eerie presence. A single book stood out—its cover blank and edges charred. Curious, I picked it up. "Weird," I muttered, flipping through its brittle pages. My blood ran cold when I saw my name inscribed on the last page.

"You’ve got the wrong guy." Darius exhaled, slow and deep. Then— "You are a thief," he said, his voice low as it rang through the chamber, sending a shiver down my spine. "And worse, you stole from me." The room felt too quiet, the air too thin. I wet my lips. "Stealing is a strong word," I hedged. "I like to think of it as… redistributing wealth." No response. Not even a shift of posture. Alright. Time to lay it on thick.

His other hand was in the pocket of his coat. "Okay, let's go then," I mumbled to myself and put the bowl in the lock. The fret jumbled as it turned into it. Click. With a quick step to the side, out of the line of fire, I yanked the door open. Nothing happened. I waited, but no proles jumped out to pounce on us. The empty frame was like a dark throat into another dimension. Not even a breeze dared to move in these seconds. Boiler rooms had always seemed suspicious to me and having a monster lurking down there didn't make it any better at that moment.
