She walked over and pressed the screen. A live feed flickered on. An elderly couple stood outside the front gate—probably in their seventies. The man was tall and thin, with a gentle stoop to his back. The woman beside him wore a simple shawl and held a large glass dish, wrapped carefully in a cloth. They didn’t look threatening. Just... curious. A voice came through the speaker. “Ma’am, there’s a couple here. They say they’re neighbors from down the private road. Wanted to meet the owner.”

I take a detour and head into the kitchen. "You are a life saver. Told them about the neighborhood, the park at the end of the street, the bakery where I worked. I did not tell them about the woman who'd lived in their house before. I did not warn them about casseroles or texts or visits at the gate.

Kurt sighed, stroking my cheek, tucking the blonde streak of my hair behind my ear. “Have you heard any of our neighbors having sex?” Kurt questioned. “Well, no…” I furrowed my brow. “Exactly. It's not that they aren’t. While most of the residents are unmated, our direct neighbors are a mated couple. And we don’t hear them going at it. But you can bet they are.” Kurt smiled. “Okay, but maybe the soundproofing is just better in the apartment.” I offered. “An apartment building isn’t going to have better anything than the packhouse that the Alpha and Luna live in.” Kurt scoffed. “Then…” I frowned.

Clay groaned as he moved me to another wall instead of the panel. “That’s the end game.” I groaned, rocking against him as I pulled his lips back to mine. How could it have been empty? But when I thought about it, I recalled that I had only seen the couple after the sun went down. In less than 10 minutes, the driver took me to my destination. I got out of the car and took a look at the house I used to live in. Now I just feel sick and disgusted to see it. This house is like a closed cage for my life. So I decided to go around the back garden and enter the house. The people who live next door are a French couple who come to live only after Christmas. The rest of the time, the house is empty. So I climbed over the wall into the French couple's garden, and then I snuck into Ron's house.

We barely spoke for the next several days, and there was an invisible tension lingering between us.
