And somehow— Reading it the second time hurts more than the first. --- The Mansion The dining room feels unusually tense. Not because of Xavier. Because of me. Because every time my phone vibrates, my chest tightens automatically now.

I feel grandpa’s hand on my shoulder, and he gives me a reassuring look. We spread out quickly, and I start showing people pictures of Sloane, but no one has seen her. “Have you seen this woman? She’s my wife.” “No, sir.” That’s the short response I’ve been getting. I spent an hour searching through the airport, and my private investigator had to mobilize every resource he could, searching the security camera. “Sir, we’ve found your wife.” My private investigator’s voice sounds from afar, and I run towards him, panting heavily. She’s at the departure gate, but we don’t have any tickets. How are we supposed to pass?

“He’s hurt bad, Jade. I don’t have time for this right now.” Her sigh crackled over the line, sharp and frustrated. “Then take him to a vet! Sy, I have a wedding in two weeks. Do you know how much work that is?” “We were attacked,” I said, my voice dropping lower. My hand drifted to the back of my neck, fingers pressing against the itchy burn of where claws had grazed my skin. “By werewolves.” The silence that followed stretched painfully long. “Shit,” Jade finally said, her voice now soft, worried. “You okay?”

I took a seat next to Joy and listened to their conversation while focusing on my food. “Do hunters live in caves?” she asked. Atalanta shook her head, “no, in houses.” “Do hunters hunt their own food, or just wolves? Do they eat the wolves?” Atalanta almost choked on her food, “we keep animals, like chickens, and we hunt for deer. Hunters see werewolves as abominations, so they will not eat them. I honestly mostly got scrapes to eat and usually there wasn’t much meat left over.” “Abominations?!” Joy had said, clearly feeling insulted.

When I looked in front of me, I saw a tall woman with coal black hair, fair skin, and dark brown eyes. She was wearing a long, black form-fitting gown with a plunging V neckline. She stepped forward, approaching me, “Well hello. What a handsome specimen of a man.” Queen Winnie put her hand on her hip, “Cool down, lady. He is taken.” Luna Abby replied, “He is my grandson-in-law. He is my granddaughter’s true mate. My granddaughter was severely injured by the rogues that you are continuing to send to us.” I stepped forward, “Aja, I’m very sorry we didn’t approach your coven with an evacuation option. My beautiful mate is laying in the hospital right now, recovering from having a huge chunk tak

Her brows knitted together as her eyes clouded over. “About 10 years ago, there was a rumor that a small village was full of Hunters and they were planning on attacking some smaller packs and covens. So a group of us went to investigate. Our mission was simple: surveillance and report back to Jack and Malachy. But something happened. Another smaller group of wolves snuck in over the barricade. They didn’t attack, but the Hunters were more prepared than we originally thought.” Marian stood up, then paced around the small rooftop.

They split up when there was a siren, each going their separate ways. The camera panned to the group of hunters, who appeared to be waiting for their turn. A few minutes later, their siren sounded, and they took off after the four women. It was impossible to deny the show was about men who hunted women like prey, with the intent of doing whatever they wanted to them if they caught them. It appeared to be consensual, but it was shocking. I watched for the next twenty minutes as each of the women were pursued, falling one by one. Only a tenacious black girl seemed to be giving them a run for their money. The other three had been captured and taken to cottages.

“Only six of us are here tonight. The others are out of town, on… business. We are a full house of fourteen.” Genevieve scanned the room again. Fourteen women, all widowed, all angry enough or broken enough—or maybe brave enough—to join this club. It wasn’t grief therapy. It was something else entirely. Celeste leaned forward, folding her hands like a chess master mid-game. “Let me introduce you to the women present here.” She pointed, one by one. “This is Harper, Widow of Congressman Timothy Lane. You might remember the scandal, though the press called it a suicide.”

CHAPTER FOURTEEN — The House on Birchwood POV: Elena Voss I drove to Birchwood Drive entirely alone. I told myself I was simply gathering vital diagnostic information. That was the truth. Mostly. The other, much uglier truth was that I needed to see it with my own eyes. I didn't want photographs, deeds, or forensic spreadsheets anymore; I needed to look at the exact physical location where my twenty-year marriage had gone to die.

I ask, stepping slightly to the side so I am no longer hidden behind Caleb's shoulder. The woman lets out a soft, mocking chuckle. "He hasn't told you about me? I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. Caleb always did like to bury things he couldn't handle." She looks back at Caleb, her expression softening into something desperate. "I'm Nancy, honey. I'm his wife."
