Lydia’s laugh snakes through the clearing, soft and sharp, glinting with cruelty. “See?” she taunts, voice velvet and barbed. “That hesitation. That choice.” She spreads her arms, encompassing everything—the circle, the pain, the pack watching with wide, terrified eyes. “Here’s your balance, Crown-bearer. Break the circle, save her—and every ward that’s kept your people safe crumbles with it.”
A gasp runs through the wolves outside the barrier, a ripple of fear and disbelief. I can feel Mira’s stare, fierce and desperate, slicing through the chaos. “Evie, don’t listen to her!” she yells, voice trembling with urgency.
