The imperial capital was a city of gilded masks and whispering secrets, its marble towers reaching for the heavens while its streets pulsed with the blood of the forgotten. Nia had walked its stone paths before, as a child, holding her mother’s hand as they shopped for food. Now, she walked as an assassin, her every step calculated, every breath measured. She was no longer Nia Wolfsong—the girl whose village had been burned and destroyed. Now, she was "Mist Fang," the most elusive, feared assassin in the empire.

“Rafael… Rafael’s army has arrived.” Killian’s forces tried to regroup, but before they could, another wave of wolves appeared. This time, they came from the south. Leading them was a massive red wolf, its fur blazing like fire under the bright sun. The wolf stood on a rocky outcrop, her stance commanding as she let out a powerful howl. The sound echoed across the battlefield, sharp and clear, like a command. Half of Killian's army froze at that, their movements stopping as if held by invisible chains. She howled again, louder this time, and something incredible happened—the warriors turned toward her. Slowly, they bowed, then, without hesitation, rushed to join her side.

Frank Kilburn stomped back into his office after questioning the two fools. If Lenny thought he’d believe that he took on eight wolves and got out alive, he was as much of an idiot as he looked. He doubted Lenny even saw McDonnell at all. But seeing the white wolf was telling. Lenny knew exactly what Sapphire looked like in her fur. If McDonnell was there for real, then he too knew.

Well, I guess I'll have to tell her the truth because she always knows when I'm lying, and she hates it when I do. She's the only friend I have in the entire pack. She's already transformed and is a beautiful omega. Her fur is golden, and her eyes are dark brown. She has a sweet and fiery personality, but that rarely surfaces. Her wolf's name is Lilica. She's very rebellious against the injustices committed against omegas. She's also very funny. Milly is six years older than me and no longer needs to attend the academy, but like me, she hasn't found her mate yet. It seems I'm not the only exception to love among wolves.

But even the loss of one pack member felt unbearable. I scoured the fighting crowd for Miles and Millie. Miles appeared first. He and Ralf were at an impasse; Ralf appeared weary. The silver and wolf’s bane must have done a number on him. Millie was facing off two medium-sized wolves and holding her own. Although Millie did not train as an enforcer, she’d practised as a warrior since we were little, and she could take on any wolf, alpha alike. We were progressing, and it seemed victory would be ours. The wolf’s bane had weakened Ralf’s men, and their strength waned. I sighed in relief. A miraculous victory seemed imminent.

I was about to jump over the wall and run to Milo when I saw something that made me stop so fast I almost fell over. Milo had finished his shifting, and where Milo had been standing, there was now a wolf. But not just any wolf. A huge red fiery wolf stood majestically in the ring. It was one of the biggest wolves, probably bigger than some alphas I had seen before. Its beautiful red fur glowed and sparkled like actual flames, reminding everyone of little lights dancing all around it like fireflies. It looked like someone had taken fire from a campfire and shaped it into a wolf.

"We spent a thousand years being the 'Protection.' Let’s try being the Neighbors." The wolf reached the floor of the canyon. It was larger than the wolves of the simulation—longer-limbed, with ears that were perpetually alert to the sounds of a dying planet. It stopped five feet from Elara. The scent of it hit her: musk, iron-dust, and something like pine—a scent the Mother had never quite managed to synthesize correctly. The wolf sniffed the air. It looked at the Green Sprout in the jar. Then, it looked at Elara’s hand.

She arrived within five minutes, but with Sapphire writhing in agony, those minutes stretched on endlessly. Dr. Mildred wore a puzzled expression as she emerged from examining Sapphire. Her eyes, usually sharp and confident, were clouded with uncertainty. With a grave sense of urgency, she beckoned me outside, gently closing the door behind us to muffle the sounds of the room we had just left. Her voice was a hushed murmur, laced with disbelief. "Alpha, are you aware that Sapphire might be harboring a latent wolf?"
