’ Evelyn’s voice floated around me. I ran faster; the wind howling past my ears. I felt disturbed by everything happening to me since the afternoon. Evelyn had gone crazy now! I realized my mother was the one in her custody. She was the daughter of the Moon Goddess Romanov had mentioned. Why hadn’t I thought of it before?

She stood before me, unmasked, her eyes burning with triumph. “Oh, Layla,” Evelyn purred, her voice now deep and resonant, no longer Emma’s soft, fearful tone, but her own, laced with venomous amusement. “Did you truly think it would be so easy to outwit me? That I would be so predictable?” Her lips curled into a sneer, her gaze flickering to the shadows where Mord held the whimpering Emma captive. “Foolish girl, to think you could escape your destiny, or defy your mother.”

He grimaced, “No, I don’t think I’d care to see her face that way.” The chair creaked loudly under my hand as I clenched the arm rest. I’ll beat the shit out of him. I was about to stand when the door to the room opened, and Evelyn walked out. She was a goddess, she had a glow about her, a confidence, that didn’t seem to be there before, when others from the Coven were around. I couldn’t help but stare. The cretin walked over to her, “Evelyn, darling.” He reached for her hands, gods… my fist clenched at my side. She brushed his hand aside, briskly coming over to the boiling cauldron.

A smile that made him feel like he was the only person in the world who mattered. "Hey," she said. "I fixed the latency issue. It was a bandwidth throttle." Ethan sat down. He didn't order coffee. He didn't take off his coat. "Who is Evelyn Vance?" he asked. The smile vanished. It didn't fade. It didn't waver. It simply deleted itself, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated panic. "What?" Mia whispered. "Evelyn Vance," Ethan repeated. "Is she your mother?"

The flame illuminated her face just enough for me to recognize it. She smiled sadly. "You've grown into your mother's eyes." Every hair on my body stood on end. "Who are you?" The woman lifted the lantern higher. "My name is Evelyn Hawthorne." My breath caught. The folder slipped from my fingers. The keys clinked against the stone floor. "No..." Tears welled in my eyes. "You're supposed to be dead." The woman took one slow step toward me. "So was I." The lantern trembled slightly in the woman's hand, casting dancing shadows across the damp stone walls.

"Mummy, look, we found our billionaire daddy!@ she says, so sweetly and so casually. Asher grins, his eyes full of excitement, and they both tug Maximus toward me. Maximus stands there, frozen, his eyes glued to me. He glances at Anna and Asher before meeting my gaze again, confusion and something else clouding his expression. His silence is almost suffocating, and I feel my heart pound in my chest as I try to steady my breath. Before I can react, Nelly steps up beside me, her hands gently resting on my shoulders. I flinch slightly at her touch, still shaken by everything that’s happening. “No sweetie, that’s not your father,” I say, forcing a smile as I stretch my hand toward Anna and Asher

It had also not changed even when puberty hit and I began to notice her a little bit more. She was beautiful, I had managed to acknowledge that but that had not changed the fact that she was annoying and it had not made me hate her any less. In fact, my annoyance sort of grew because I noticed her attractiveness. I sighed as Everett continued to try sell me the reasons why this was a good idea. “You know Evelyn, Cassian. I know you guys never liked each other or got along, but you know can trust that she is never going to do anything to hurt your daughter.”

Elena stood near the screen. Studying faces. Looking for something. Though she wasn't entirely sure what. Minutes passed. Then something caught her attention. A face. Familiar. Not because she knew the person well. Because she had seen them before. Somewhere. In another context. Another chapter of this story. Her pulse quickened. She stepped closer. The room fell silent. "Elena?" Lucian's voice sounded distant. She barely heard him. Because standing near the edge of the photograph was Evelyn Cross.

But this time, there was a signature in the meta data. And a name. It appeared in the upper right corner of the screen, embedded deep into the digital code. “E. Carter” Damien took a step back. Zayne leaned in. “E. Carter?, isn't that your wife's surname?” “ And E.Carter,” Julius read hoarsely. “ Do you know her?” Julius screamed. “ Holy shit, it was Evelyn!” Damien’s hands curled into fists, his eyes stayed locked on the screen, unmoving, unblinking.
