She stood on the other side of the circular library desk, intricately carved and styled out from the rosewood. I looked at Vera, who blinked at me blankly and innocently.

Not the grand one with its tall windows and ceremonial tables—the smaller room near the back where books gather dust and no one pretends to know where everything is. I take down a ledger I never finished filling. The one I once thought would become history. I opened it. The first pages are neat. Dates. Names. Decisions. The handwriting is tight with importance.
