The Witness Novels & Stories

"You became the witness. And a picture can be sold, Scar. But a witness... a witness is the person who sets the fire." As we stood up and adjusted our clothes, the small television monitor mounted near the elevator door at the end of the tunnel flickered into life. The news anchor was speaking over a live feed of the courthouse steps, her voice sharp and urgent. She wasn't using the old family labels anymore. Across the screen, under a picture of my face that didn't have any makeup or digital smoothing, the title read: SCARLETT VALE: THE TESTIMONY OF THE SYSTEM.

Arielle glanced at her daughter. I know. The Witness suddenly reached toward the doorway. Noah moved closer. He wants us to go. Arielle looked at the baby. How do you know? The Witness's silver eyes met Arielle's. A strange warmth passed through the room. Arielle understood. The Witness had not merely watched every possibility.

The six visible witnesses stood outside. The seventh space remained empty. The silver woman stepped forward. “Emily Carter.” Emily stared. “Yes?” “You have been called.” Emily glanced at Kael. “By whom?” The woman looked toward the empty space. “By the seventh.” Emily swallowed. “What does it want?” The child-shaped witness spoke. “It doesn't want anything.” “Then why call me?” “Because it remembers you.” Emily frowned. “Everyone remembers me.” The elderly witness shook her head. “Not like this.”

“It’s a true story, Luna. I promise.” “Tell us what happened, Valery!” Astoria demanded, banging her hands on the table. “A demonic bear? Really?” Anya asked, staring at her with stars in her eyes. Krista did not say anything, but she, too, was looking at Valery with eager curiosity.

Plus, she has the right to not want to go out with me, so I don’t really think I should be upset about her not showing up. As I wait for my meal, a really attractive lady walks up to me and joins me by sitting. “Can I help you?” I ask her politely, feeling mildly confused as to why she decided to sit with me. “I’m Victoria Hare, and I am the leader of 'The Witnesses',” She begins. “And I really need your help,” She adds as fear dances in her eyes.
