The shift was so gradual it was impossible to say where it crossed the line, or whether there was a line to cross.
Phoenix read those letters carefully, making notes, occasionally pausing to say something about what she was finding.
“She uses the same phrase in 1887 and 1891,” she said. “I have been thinking of you in the way that I should not. Four years apart. Same phrasing. She never stopped thinking in those terms, that she should not.”
