The Witch Keeps Time
After the almost-kiss, the world behaves for exactly twelve minutes.
I count them because counting is something a soldier does when he can’t control anything else. Twelve minutes where the clock ticks like it’s supposed to, where the fire doesn’t lean, where the air doesn’t thicken with that subtle attention I’ve come to recognize as time listening for weakness.
Twelve minutes is a gift.
Twelve minutes is also a warning.
Time is eternal. It can afford to be patient. What it cannot afford, apparently, is being ignored.
