I found myself replaying her scream at night, hearing it in the quiet halls.
On the morning of the third day, Silas rose before dawn. His expression was unreadable as he strapped his weapons.
“You shouldn’t go alone,” I said, watching him.
He gave me that half-smile that wasn’t a smile at all. “I’m Alpha. If something’s stirring on the borders, I’ll feel it. Better me than the whole pack running blind.”
My throat tightened. “You don’t always have to be the one.”
“Yes, I do.” He came close, cupping my face, pressing his forehead to mine. His voice was a whisper meant only for me. “I won’t let him come here without knowing what he plans. Stay here. Keep the little ones safe.”
