The two of them, in their different languages, began to nudge me.
The practices grew longer, more precise. Drills that once took a week to feel comfortable became habits in two days. There was a tape we ran: three shifts, a feint, a pull, a counter; it had the etiquette of a dance and the violence of a berserker. Where I used to be reactive, I learned to anticipate. Where I used to commit, I learned to delay just enough to make the strike mean something.
