I have nothing left inside. Eddie studied the flimsy metal railing on the front porch. It was so fascinating and intricate, and he had never seen it before in such a light. “I already called them,” he said. “Syrina has a performance and Rikki-Tikki is down with a particularly nasty flu. I even thought about Chad, but . . . ” He didn’t bother to finish the sentence, because the idea of Chad the Fish Guy and Bryony flying anywhere together didn’t particularly make him happy.

“And I’m going to prove it.” Edward just shrugged, looking completely unbothered. His face was too perfect, like a mask. “Investigate all you want,” he replied. “I have nothing to hide.” The way he said it—like he knew something I didn’t—made my skin crawl. He looked pleased with himself, his amber eyes gleaming under the harsh hospital lights. The room door opened and Penelope stepped out. She looked tired, with dark circles under her eyes. Her clothes were wrinkled from sitting by Debbie’s bed all night. She ran her fingers through her messy red hair, trying to smooth it down.

Penn struggled to find an excuse. “What are we? Invisible?” Rima deadpans. “They need somebody who they can fear.” Penn expressed as Rima rolled her eyes. “Rima is the most feared among us three.” Stanley informs Penn who shoulders slump. “I don’t want to go. I might end up killing him or he kills me, one of those two things will happen.” Penn stated. “It will also serve as a booster to what you can endure. Like a training exercise.” Rima offers. “I don’t want to go.”

“I will leave Doris to you then.” He instantly took off but paused before running out of the hospital and went back to Ages, placing a hand on his shoulder. “I thought you lef-“ “I just need to tell you this,” Eden said, looking at Noel. “Stop being afraid. Nothing is going to come from standing in the sideline and waiting.” “Boss. I don’t-“ “I know,” Eden said, giving him an encouraging smile. “I know what you feel and I also know what the other person feels. I also know just how much of a coward you are.”

“You’re thinking too loud again.” I smiled weakly. “I can’t help it.” He walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist. “We’ll figure this out. You and me. Just like always.” I turned in his arms, resting my forehead against his. “I’m not afraid of Aaron anymore,” I whispered. “But I am afraid of what I might become because of him.” Edward’s hands slid up my back, steady and sure. “Then I’ll be here to remind you who you are.”

I decide to ask him, "do you normally sneak up on people?" "I thought you would get scared and-" but I cut him off, "and scream" he nods at my response "hate to break it to you but I don't get scared very easily, better look next time" "There's gonna be a next time?" He asks his head on an angle, "If Armstrong doesn't kill me before then maybe, I'm sure you get scared like a baby" Edison slowly nods. "I'm sorry" his voice cracks, but I shake my head again at him, "you don't need to be, I'm fine, I can take care of myself"

No one wanted to be associated with me back then, for fear of being bullied too. “Do I look that different?” Eddie asked with amusement. He held his hands out like he was on display and he wanted me to take a good look. I felt my face flush with embarrassment. He looked tall and fit. When we were kids, Eddie was on the short side and just a little heavy. He looked like a completely different person. If we were back in the human world, I had no doubt Eddie would be pursuing work as an actor or an influencer. He certainly had the look and attitude for it.

I took a step back when Edd gritted his teeth and took an angry step at me, saying, "You..." . "What?" I grumbled. "Look at you, you're both afraid and rebellious ." "Who said?" I objected. "It's a reflex, a reflex." Eddie shook his head heavily. "Stop bullshit and walk to the next building."
