CHAPTER FIVE Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr! That was the alarm clock. Ava reached for it blindly and punched it off. She pulled the duvet past her stomach as she sat up and wiped her eyes sore. She walked into the toilet where she urinated, washed her face, and came out again. The alarm clock which was in the drawer close to her bed gave her a beautiful memory. The alarm clock was her twenty-sixth birthday gift. It reminded her of her mom’s elder sister; Aunt Caroline, her favorite relative. She remembered how she had left her home in Puerto Rico and traveled down just to see her after she had been admitted to the hospital. Aunt Caroline had never left her side until the last day she was discharged. They

“Is that an ex-girlfriend? An old assistant? You keep looking at me like I’m someone else, and it’s honestly creeping me out.” He didn't answer right away. He stood up slowly and walked toward the window, looking out at the gardens. The silence stretched between us until it felt like it was going to snap. “Valeria was someone who didn't take orders very well,” he said, his back turned to me. “She was stubborn. She was loud. She didn't care about professionalism or tardiness. She just did what she wanted. She didn't even like to work because she felt she was a princess and didn't need to work.”

I murmured, already moving toward the cell he'd indicated. Valeria sat on the narrow bench that passed for a bed, her back against the concrete wall, her knees pulled up to her chest. She was still wearing the clothes she'd been arrested in, a cute dress that looked out of place in this harsh environment. Her hair was disheveled, mascara smudged under her eyes from crying. She didn't belong here. The contrast between her beauty, her grace, everything she was, and this filthy place meant for criminals was as clear as day.

“I guess prison just sharpened the edges.” “I go by the name of Valeria now. Just tell me what you need from me, Rios, and let’s get this over with.” Seeing her seriousness, Rios pushed a white folder across the table. “I only need two years of your life.” Valeria flipped it open. A woman’s face stared back at her, framed by soft waves of dark hair. Her eyes, though tantalizing enough, looked distant and resembled death. One that looked exactly the same as hers whenever she stared at her reflection in the mirror. “Who is she?” Valeria asked, still studying the portrait.

It was as if they were welcoming royalty into their home. “Welcome, spero che il viaggio fin qui sia andato bene.” Seraphina Vitelli came up to me, hugging me and kissing my cheeks “Yes, the drive here was fine, thank you,” I forced a smile. “Well then, come, come!” She was quite beautiful, looking at her from up close, she had light green eyes and platinum blonde hair, which suited her perfectly. She looked so much like her daughter, except for the hair. “I’m sure you’ve all met, this is Elia,” she motioned to her husband, “my children, and your husband, who doesn’t seem to want to greet his wife,” she said the last part sternly.
