They were new pictures of her body, showing her scars. She tried calling the number, but no one picked up, and she felt like she was going crazy.

I approached the cabinet where I keep the files that John handed me before. My hands were shaking as I flipped the page and scanned the details of Angela. Then, I stopped after I read something. Tears were rolling down my cheeks as the papers fell on the floor. I was blankly staring at the wall while the information I had read slowly sank into my head. I grew up with my mother in Spain, all my life was spent in Spain. She told me my father denied being responsible for me when she was newly pregnant so her family kicked her out. She had to move to Spain because of the shame but lucky for her, she later met her husband years. They had three more children and the man already had a grown up daughter then. Anyways, life wasn't that great for me, not at all.

I looked up, and my good mood evaporated on the spot. Valeria Montes stood there, flanked by her two loyal sidekicks who had trailed her since high school as if attached by an invisible leash. Dressed in a tight, flashy mini-dress with her blonde hair gleaming flawlessly in the sunlight, her eyes locked onto me. "Surprised you made it here," Valeria said, crossing her arms as she judged me from head to toe, her gaze lingering on my beat-up canvas shoes. Her signature venomous smirk spread across her face. "Elena Castillo. I guess the rumors were true—you actually got a scholarship here. Make sure you use my tax money wisely, Lenatic."

The broad-shouldered woman laughed once again before saying something to Lukas that I couldn’t hear from such a distance. “Thats Valeria.” I finally looked away from the courtyard before glancing toward Anya instead. “Oh.” “She is our pack’s elite Gamma as well as the current Head of Border Security.” My curiosity surfaced despite everything else currently occupying my thoughts. “She certainly looks incredibly capable.” Anya smiled proudly before leaning comfortably against the balcony railing. “That is honestly putting it rather mildly. Valeria has been training alongside Lukas ever since they were both children.” I blinked slowly while processing that information.

She cackled and intentionally stepped on my feet. I groaned in pain and managed to stand up. “Alpha finally dumped her for me, and now she's salty,” Tracy spat out. “Brianna, you have to see her face when he rejected her. What a silly goof!” She hissed. Brianna shrieked excitedly, flashing her hands in the air. “Wow, Lena, you are really done for. You can't keep a man, you lost your mom, and your father couldn't even live long enough to take care of us. You must be bad luck,"

I started typing, my fingers flying across the screen, venting everything I had held inside all day. Leah: Valeria is a nightmare. She complained about everything. Every venue. Every detail. Nothing was good enough. Nothing was perfect. She kept bringing up Austin and how much he loves her and how he wants only the best for her. It was torture. Pure torture. I paused, took a breath, then kept typing.

When I finally met her, I understood why Miles was so protective. Valeria was twenty-two, heartbreakingly beautiful in that delicate, ethereal way that made people want to shield her from the world. She had long dark hair that fell in natural waves past her shoulders, porcelain skin that looked like she'd never seen the sun, and these wide, innocent hazel eyes that seemed perpetually on the verge of tears. She was petite, almost fragile-looking, the kind of woman who made men instinctively want to protect her. She was also, I would later learn, a master manipulator who'd spent years perfecting the art of playing the victim.
