A little more genuinely this time. “That’s becoming a pattern.” Even Lyra smiled at that. Briefly. Then her expression grew serious. “The shadow isn’t a god.” The statement immediately caught my attention. The shadow’s smile vanished. Interesting. Lyra continued. “It wants people to think it is.” The shadow slammed against the door. The Heart shook.

I’ve done nothing but lie to her from the very start. Tonight, it’s quieter than usual in the house. The shadows feel heavier, the silence oppressive.
