DAMON'S POV Year 1900 - 19th Century "Father has arrived!" Adam shouted, his voice full of excitement as he bolted outside. My heart leaped at his words. I dropped the book I had been engrossed in, its leather cover hitting the wooden floor with a dull thud, and rushed after him. It had been a full year since Father had left for the war in Russia. They called it the Boxer Rebellion, and Father had joined the Russian forces aiding in suppressing the uprising in China. His absence had left a void in our lives, and Mother, especially, had seemed almost lifeless, her once-vivid grey eyes dulled by fear and worry.

Nicole looked at the clock in the room and said, “I’m kind of in a hurry so I’ll make my story brief and comprehensive. After breaking your heart, I owe you an explanation my darling Muhammad.” Muhammad tried switching on the radio on his belt, in hope that anyone on the other end could listen to the conversation if the signal was restored. If Maryam and he were going to die tonight, their death might as well not be in vain. The most important thing was revealing the real identity of The First One.

“You know what that thing is?” The creature’s burning eyes never left the sky. “It is something older than your world.” Dax crossed his arms, now tense. “That was helpful.” The creature continued, its voice low and shaky. “The first war wasn’t fought here.” Aria’s breath caught. “There was a first war?” The stranger finally lowered its gaze slightly. “Your world was built after.” Silence fell between them. Dax felt his heart pounding faster than ever. “You’re saying… our world was born from something worse?”

For the first time— the True King looked serious. Actually serious. Then the red sky split open. A gigantic portal appeared. Larger than any before. Larger than the Citadel itself.
