The patriarchal pissing contest that stained our collective yesterdays recounted, retold, revisited in page after ponderous page. Heavy tomes groaning with the weight of mistakes made and hearts broken. Hopes dashed and success stolen. Forgotten lives buckling under the burden of dreams lost. She strolled, her eyes scanning the large letters embossed on covers puckered and creased. The dog-eared corners of aged paper discovered when the book was lifted, turned, opened.

Wow. I was drooling. It wasn't just a room with books. It was a sanctuary. Floor-to-ceiling shelves packed with hardcovers, a rolling ladder, a massive fireplace that looked like it hadn't been used in decades. The scent of old paper and leather hit me, comforting and familiar. I ran my finger along the spines. ‘The Art of War’, ‘Sun Tzu’. ‘Histories of the Roman Empire’. Biographies of kings and conquerors. Heavy stuff. Interspersed with them were fiction classics. Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Dumas.

For the next three hours, Waverly sat curled on the couch, absorbed in her novel about a World War II couple writing letters back and forth to one another during the height of the event. Even though Waverly had never given much consideration until late about finding her match, she still was passionate about reading stories surrounding the idea of fantastical love found in the most conventional and trope-like characters.
