Above his head, I scribbled, “Rookie gato in shining armor.” It made me laugh, which helped.

He walks out of the kitchen with the small precise footsteps of a child who has completed his task for the morning, and he goes back down the hall to his room, and I hear his door close softly. I sit on the kitchen floor with the notebook in my lap. I open it. I look at the map. Then I turn the page. There is another drawing underneath it that I have not seen. Grey has drawn it in a different colour. Green. It shows two figures standing on a pavement outside what seemed like a building. One is a man in what looked like a coat. The other is a woman in a green crayon painted dress. Above the man's head, Grey has drawn a small arrow.

Is that he? The next sheet had a drawing of Zog. "It's me?" – Zog asks in his head. -I think so. Goddess, it's magnificent. The next sheets were drawings of Lucifron smiling, Lucifron looking at the moon, Lucifron looking far away. So many of his drawings, until the blank pages appear. - Do you like it? – Gary asked from the bathroom entrance, where, wrapped in a towel, he was leaning against the doorpost with his arms crossed.

They were similar to Nathan’s work, but Michael’s was more wonky, and the height difference was less dramatic. Leon’s drawing was the neatest, with a big red heart around us.

"Hey, kiddo." Her big blue eyes beam in happiness. "What are you drawing?" I ask, walking over to the abandoned paper she was working on moments before. She catches up to me taking my hand, she then leads me the rest of the way to the drawing. I pick up the picture and look it over, there's a yellow sun in the top corner with grey clouds around it. Towards the bottom is two people, both stick figures, ones taller with short hair and the others shorter with long hair. The two people are holding hands.

I ran a hand through my hair, gripping the back of my neck, angry, tired, and embarrassed. "Asher?" a small voice said. I looked up. Zaya. She stood at the edge of the porch, holding something in her tiny hands—a crayon drawing. Her eyes, large and filled with concern, studied me. “I drew this,” she whispered, holding it out. “It’s you. And mommy. And all of us. We’re smiling.” I took the paper gently. A lump rose in my throat. It was stick figures and crooked hearts, but it made my chest twist painfully.

“Thank you very much, Suji,“ Jason gently patted the head of the almost four-year-old girl. Then he squeezed in and sat on the long wooden bench between her and Ashley. ”Wow, your drawing is amazing. Is that the front yard? That's the main building... and that's the pine tree in front, right?” Jason pointed to each shape on Suji's drawing paper. “Uh-uh!” Suji nodded enthusiastically.
