2: What could be the odds?

Adrian Pov

Ding!

An alarm sounded.

(Engagement dinner at the Mancini's)

When I saw the alarm, I clenched my fist for a moment. My lungs felt as though there was a clog, blocking air from passing through.

What was worse than getting married to the daughter of the family who tried to kill me?

As if living as the son of a man who only belittles and insults me at every chance he got was not enough, I had to marry into the enemy's household.

When I woke up from a coma four months ago, my father didn't even let me regain consciousness when he told me the Mancini's had tried to have me killed.

Their quest for power and control over every business in the city was alarming. The only family that competed against them was no other than the Moretti.

But in mass, in wealth, in strength, Mancini's was far greater.

Since the Moretti's and the Mancini's were in the same line of business, a feud is something that was unavoidable, at least, that's what my father explained.

It's been only a few months since he went public with my identity, even though I was an illegitimate son, I was already a victim of a failed assassination.

It was either the other submits, or there was going to be a continuous bloodshed.

As a Moretti and the only descendant of the Moretti family, there was only one solution my father could think of-

An alliance through marriage.

I couldn't think of any other kind of torture but I had to do it, after all, how possibly could I get my revenge?

“Mr Adrian, your father is waiting for you downstairs.” The maidservant quickly announced.

Only after her words, did I realize, ‘Being wary, was all I've ever been for the past ten years.’

I heaved a deep breath as I made my way downstairs. Leonardo Moretti was standing by the window with his right hand man, George.

When he laid eyes on me, his brows furrowed instantly in disgust. “Even a minute late shows incompetence. Adrian, you never learn.”

I mellowed my eyes, like I've always done all these years.

It's been ten years since Leonardo Moretti took me into his home. I was nothing but his illegitimate son, if he hadn't lost his family, I probably would still be stealing food on the street after my mother's death.

There have never been a moment when I thought that I was safe, or perhaps much better than in my early years.

My father's disapproval of me had crushed every bit of hope, and expectations I had. Living to gain his approval, was the only thing I've lived for during these past years.

“Hmm…” He grunted, as if seeing me this quiet and lost for words was how I should be.

The cool atmosphere became quite tense, as the sound of high heels clicking against the tile floor got closer, until my father's young wife appeared.

“Leonardo sweetheart.” She smiled.

A stranger would probably mistake her for an innocent woman, who was stupidly kind. Her gorgeous face, slender body, and her puppy eyes could make one easily give in to her.

Perhaps, that was why even my tyrant father fell prey to her seductiveness.

But unlike her face, her heart was like the devil itself.

She stood beside Leonardo and naturally, she latched into his arms.

When she noticed me, she rolled her eyes and said, “I wonder if he can pull this off, he lacks potential.”

I never expected less, after all, my existence was a threat to her.

Leonardo frowned, “I know you are incompetent Adrian, you have the blood of that slut of a mother.” He grunted, “If you are able to pull this off, and bring every information about the Macini, your contributions will be rewarded.”

It would be better if he insulted just me, not my mother.

“You speak as if I don't want them gone as well. It was me they tried to kill.” I grunted.

“Then prove yourself, after marriage to Isabel, treat her well, while spying on the family and bringing me information about them. I will take care of the rest.”

“Adrian, I believe you are not totally useless, right?”

He said those words without blinking as if that's what he has always looked forward to. He then trudge towards me slowly and said-

“There is no telling what I would do to you, if you fail this simple mission.”

Once again, my chest felt like it was crushed. I clenched my fist right, trying to subdue the rage that was threatening to explode.

All those years of accumulated insults were piled up, so much that I could feel the muscles of my heart twisting, I could barely breathe but I managed to keep my expressions unreadable.

After a two hour long ride, we arrived at Mancini's estate.

Immediately we were seated, Gabriel and Liliana Mancini walked over and sat by the couch in the opposite direction.

“Adrian is such a fine young man, Leonardo.” Gabriel's smile was short and instantly the skin of his face wrinkled in a frown.

“He takes after me.” Leonardo complimented which came as a shock to me.

There was an inexplicable irritation that crawled through my body.

Never once had he complimented me, but here he was pretending to be the father of the year. One would mistake the alliance for a happy ceremony when both families are aware it was to prevent anymore bloodshed.

I could see a smile struggling on Liliana’s lips, until her eyes suddenly glimmered as she called, “Isabelle, over here.”

I turned, only to meet eyes with a blue eyed brunette. She smiled and she looked like the most gentle woman on earth.

She took her seat beside her mother and then Liliana introduced her, “This is Isabel my daughter.” Then she turned to Isabel, “That's Adrian, what do you think?”

Her lips slowly curled into a smile as she said, “He is good looking, mom. I couldn't have hope for the best.” She chuckled slightly.

“I guess that settles it…Adrian…”

Before Gabriel could finish, sturdy steps echoed and instantly the smell of Indian agarwood mixed with sandalwood, musk, and Turkish rose filled the air.

They were expensive ingredients used to make luxurious perfume that sell at almost a million and half dollars for a small bottle.

The scent brought a hint of familiarity that had me thinking where I could have met such a man.

I waited until he appeared, and holy heavens, he was nothing I expected him to be.

He had dark shoulder length hair that was slick and smooth. Chiseled jawline and high cheekbones, with piercing grey eyes.

The man was exceedingly charming until he opened his mouth to speak.

“This wedding will not take place.”

  • Becoming the Forbidden Possession of the Mafia Boss   78. He left, just like that

Adrian’s POVThe moment the cold metal door of the interrogation room clanged shut behind me, I knew what game they wanted to play. But I was done talking. I crossed my arms, leaned back in the uncomfortable chair, and stared at the two detectives across from me. Their eyes were tired, faces drawn from hours of trying to connect dots that didn’t exist. Or maybe they did, but not in the way they thought.“I want a lawyer,” I said calmly. That was it. They exchanged looks, one of them sighing, dragging a hand down his face. I didn’t care. Let them sit there and stew in their frustration. They could glare all they wanted, but I wasn’t going to hand them what they needed.Minutes passed in silence until finally, the door opened again. A man in a sharp navy suit walked in like he owned the place. “I’ll be representing Mr. Adrian Moretti,” he said confidently, flashing a card at the detectives.I didn’t recognize him. He must’ve been sent in by Nikolai or Leonardo. Probably Nikolai-Leonar

  • Becoming the Forbidden Possession of the Mafia Boss   77. Cold cuffs

Adrian’s POVDragging myself off the wheelchair, I staggered to the bed. My ribs screamed, but I ignored the pain. I grabbed my phone from under the pillow with trembling hands. My thumb hesitated for a moment before pressing Felix’s number. He’d been in hiding since almost killing me. Coward.‘The number you have dialed is currently unreachable.’I cursed and nearly threw the phone at the wall when it suddenly vibrated. It's Leonardo.Of course.“Adrian,” he said the moment I picked up. No greetings.“If you go public and fan the flames around the Guerreros, the media will tear the Mancinis apart. They’ll pin every damn thing on them. Do it, and you ruin them.”My eyes narrowed. “So now you’re worried about them?”“No,” he said flatly. “I’m worried about you being a fool. Don’t think you’re one of them, Adrian. You never were.”“And what am I then?” I snapped. “One of the Morettis?”Silence. Then the call dropped.I stared at the blank screen for a few more minutes before taking a dee

  • Becoming the Forbidden Possession of the Mafia Boss   76. Like a prisoner

Adrian’s POVI stared at my reflection in the window, tracing the faint scar near my collarbone with my eyes. The ache in my chest never left, it had simply taken root, quietly pulsing beneath every breath. The image of my mother on her knees, tears clinging to her lashes while a gun hovered near her temple… it haunted me. And the one holding it,Nikolai Mancini, who stood not twenty feet away from me almost every day.I knew then what I had refused to believe. The man who murdered my mother was here in this house. I couldn’t prove it, not yet, but I would. Before the end of this month, I’d uncover every dark truth wrapped in silk ties and polished shoes. So I waited. The doctors cleared me to leave the hospital a week ago, but I hadn’t truly returned to my life, if I ever had one to begin with. The moment I wheeled through the front gates of the Mancini mansion again, I became something else. A threat. A ticking bomb in a borrowed suit.Gabriel wasted no time moving me out of Isab

  • Becoming the Forbidden Possession of the Mafia Boss   75. A photo evidence

Adrian’s POVLeonardo stood by the window like a permanent fixture, hands clasped behind his back as though he were observing a painting, not a hospital room. I didn’t say a word. I just stared out the opposite window, pretending to admire the gray sweep of the clouds over the city skyline. In truth, I was counting the seconds, listening to the machines beeping beside me, feeling the dull, dragging ache in my gut. I didn’t acknowledge him. Not even when he shifted his weight or cleared his throat. He had been here over an hour. Not once had he asked how I was. Typical. Finally, I glanced at him. That was all it took.“Are you now besties with Nikolai Volkov?” he asked with disdain.I took in a slow breath, biting down the urge to answer with all the venom I had. Instead, I said- “Thanks for checking up on me, Father. You can leave if you have nothing else to say.”His eyes darkened, and for a second, his arm lifted just enough that I flinched. My body remembered far more than it sho

  • Becoming the Forbidden Possession of the Mafia Boss   74. Heart to heart

Nikolai’s POVI hated seeing him like that.Adrian lay there, pale, fragile and bruised. His eyes were open now, yes but they were still dazed with pain. And yet, he still looked at me. Those sharp, stormy eyes still found mine as if tethered. I hated it. Hated how it made my chest feel too tight, like something unspoken had lodged between my ribs.I tightened my grip on his hand.I shouldn't have said those words earlier. “I won’t let anyone hurt you again.” What the fuck was I thinking?Between me and him, there was a thick line of hate and there could never be us. Why did I still crave him?At every glance, my countenance failed me, I couldn't keep my composure. That wasn’t how I operated. I gave orders, I didn't make promises I couldn’t keep. But when he said those words earlier - “How long have you been here?" I felt my my heart crumbled. Now his gaze held me like a chain. He blinked slowly, taking me in. I knew he was trying to figure out what was real and what wasn't. He fr

  • Becoming the Forbidden Possession of the Mafia Boss   73. He said the truth, all of it.

Adrian’s POVEverything was black, heavy and still. But voices echoed somewhere in the fog of my mind. Distant, low... sharp. One of them was unmistakable-Nikolai.“Have you been able to track him down?”Another voice answered him, gruff and clipped. “No, sir. We’ve put a ban on his passport. We believe he’ll try to escape through a ship. Our men are covering every known port and escape route.”A tense pause. Then Nikolai’s voice again, colder than I’d ever heard it. “Good. Make sure not a word gets to the media.”Media? Escape?I wanted to speak, to ask what was going on. But I couldn’t move. I wasn’t sure if I was dreaming or if I was trapped in my own body. My limbs felt like bricks.“What about the families?” the other man asked.Nikolai didn’t hesitate. “Everyone in the family will pay for it. Get rid of them.”My heart lurched in my chest. Get rid of them? What the hell was he talking about? The man responded in that same robotic voice, “Tonight.”"Yes boss." The next thing I hea
