Winifred's POV~

I was free but still in chains, having given myself up to Tyler several hours ago in a desperate bid to save Elara from his blood-stained altar. Gideon was missing, his emaciated body left behind in the safe house, his kidneys ravaged by a disease, a silent pact between us, his destiny unknown as Bloodhound mass raids raided Vellex, their blood-curdling cries an ominous thunder in the night. The crushing truth that I was their “Vessel Origin,” the one that gave them bloodline, a secret I’d carried in silence since I had no choice and wasn’t willing to face trial with Silver Veil all those years ago, the betrayal of my family I’d never owned up to. Fear curled in my stomach, but my love for Elara, for the twin I had hidden—Lyra, stolen at birth by Silver Veil—was a fire that I stoked, burning through the guilt threatening to devour me. I have come here to finish this nightmare, to cut out any relationship between myself and Silver Veil, even if it killed me.

Lyra’s POV~When I first stepped into a lecture hall, I wanted to flee.It wasn’t fear. Not exactly. It was the weight of everyone’s eyes on me.Curious.Cautious.Some awed. Some wary.I sensed the unasked questions in the manner they followed me across the room. The long lost twin that nobody knew about until she stood on a snowy battlefield, and killed an Alpha. The new student with scars that seemed to have burned down her arm in the form of runes.I took my seat anyway.Damien nodded to me subtly from his place at the front of the room, his black trench coat flapping as he walked. More than I’d have thought, his calm soothed me.Elara sat down next to me. She brushed my hand, a mere whisper escaping my breath. The room grew silent as the lesson got started. The days flowed easily. Easy in some places. Jagged in others.I spent the majority of the days, watching.Seeing students walk from building to building, heads leaned toward one another, whispering, laughing — living.I was j

Jasmine’s POV~I used to like how the academy smelled.Paper, candle wax, battered leather from too many books and boots. Each time I recognized the faintest scent of lavender clinging to the halls—probably an enchanted cleaning spell some student was using to gain merit points. And now everything smells like smoke.Even after the fires go out.Even though the war is over.Even though Tyler is dead.Even though I killed him.The whispers began on day two. The first day, walking into the library and three students whispered. Not quickly enough.“She’s the one who—”“Her father—”“I heard she didn’t even blink to do it.”I didn’t bother to correct them. Because they weren’t wrong.I didn’t blink.I returned to the library for day four. I sat in the back, behind the oldest rune indexes, near the rear and I hoped no one would notice me. But whenever anyone passed I’d see their gaze on me.As though I should be in the shadows, not in the sunlight. They didn’t say it, but I saw it in their f

Elara’s POV~I blinked up at the academy gates, studying them as though I’d never seen them. They hadn’t changed. The same monumental stone arch, the silver runes and the great oak trees cast shadows at the entrance. Groups of students walked along the paths, talking quietly, in neat uniforms. It looked the same. But I didn’t feel the same.Jasmine was standing next to me, her hands tucked in the coat pockets. Her eyes were motionless, fixed straight ahead, inscrutable. I hadn’t seen her blink in a minute. Lyra hesitated at my other side, hands playing with the hem of her sleeve. She’d never been here before, but I could tell by the way her shoulder muscles tensed up, she felt it already, just like me.The gates opened silently. Some of the students stopped as we walked by. Some whispered. Others stared. I picked up fragments — “That’s her…” “The twin…” “Did you hear what happened?” “She killed her father.”I kept walking.Let them talk.We are not here for attention. We came here to

Lyra’s POV~The snow had never seemed so clean. We gathered in a circle around the grave. Sabrina’s body was tied in dark wool, her hands crossed with the ritual key balanced between two of her fingers. Her lips were pressed together but they no longer seemed to be punctured with pain. She looked... peaceful.Too peaceful.I watched the wind draw her hair gently across her cheek — the same cheek she’d once turned away from us, and now — turning toward us in surrender.Roland held a torch. He didn’t say anything. None of us did.Not yet.Jasmine stood rigidly beside him, arms crossed, shoulders squared. Her face gave nothing away. Not sorrow. Not relief. Not the chaos that I was certain must be raging below.Winifred’s arm remained in a sling. She blinked and blinked as if she didn’t want to cry. Caspian hovered near Jasmine. Damien’s fingers had brushed Elara’s arm once, but he’d said nothing.I stepped forward. The snow crunched under my feet.“I never felt like though I could trust

Jasmine’s POV~“No more running!” I shouted my voice raw, my hands tearing through the metal door with my claws. Sparks flew. There was a searing pain in my upper arm, which a silver-coated blade had scarred minutes before and I did not halt. Not now.Not when I could feel him in me.Tyler.My father. My blood. And the one guy who I would kill tonight.Caspian ran beside me, and the door broke inward with the sound of the metal tearing. There was a gush of heat from the dark hall beyond—it was unnatural, throbbing. A choking chemical smell stung my throat and eyes.“Elara—take the west side!” I said, over the thrashing of feet behind me.She agreed, eyes blazing in her wolf body. And Lyra followed her, shard visibly pulsing beneath her skin, Damien looming through the exit.We surged into the facility. The lab in the east was crumbling to pieces—walls flickering with red emergency lights, silver runes flickering as they lost their power. Fingers of smoke twisted around broken columns.

Elara’s POV~I felt cold as I arrived at the cleared patch of snow, the only sounds I could hear were my shallow breathing and my heart. Jasmine was still chained, her blood falling into the snow. Her black fur had dulled, and her eyes were filled with pain and weariness. But she was alive.Barely.Next to me, Lyra swayed on her feet, with the ritual shard secured to her arm. She leaned against me, her breath short. I leaned into her and she leaned into me, each of us bracing the other. Our twin bond had always been strong, but tonight it felt different.Roland surrounded the perimeter of the clearing. Winifred clawed her way in from the other side, her knife shining. Caspian snarled and prowled around like a caged beast. He was injured by the sniper shot, his limp hardly noticeable in his tawny wolf form, but he growled, a sound that reverberated through the snow. And then there was Sabrina.Bleeding, one hand pressing the place in her stomach where the bullet had entered, but still
