ALEX

I was standing in front of Emma’s door, holding a gift bag like it weighed ten times more than it did. My fingers tightened around the handles, and I swallowed hard.

“Hi, I’m Alex. I’m your dad. I—uh—”

I stopped and shook my head. That sounded stiff. Weird.

“Hey, I got you something… and if it’s okay with you, I’d really like to be in your life.”

No. Too desperate.

I sighed and looked down at the bag again. I had bought an Ironman toy for Liam and a Cinderella doll for Liana. It wasn't anything fancy because I didn't want my children's first impression of drawing close to me to be because I bought them expensive gifts.

Just something thoughtful. Something I would've loved to give them on any ordinary day, if there had ever been ordinary days with them.

This wasn’t just any visit, though. This was me walking into their lives for the very first time.

I forced a deep breath into my lungs. Raising my free hand, I finally pressed the bell.

I didn’t know if Emma had talked to them alre

ALEX“I’m going back home.”Silence settled over the room like a heavy fog after Emma's words. I stared at her, sure that I was misinterpreting her words. It was Celia who cleared her throat softly and broke the silence. “Yes… of course, Emma. You should go and be with your father. Then we can come back after he's cured.”I thought that would be the end of it. But Emma shook her head.“No. I’m really going home, Celia,” she said again, slower this time. “I should’ve never stayed away from them this long. There’s nothing holding me here.”From the corner of my eye, I caught Stefano’s expression flickering like someone had just slapped him.Emma turned toward him, as if realizing her words. “Stefano, I didn’t mean it like that.”“It’s okay,” Stefano replied, trying to smile. “I know what you mean.”I stayed silent because I didn't know how to feel about this. This was what I had wanted; for Emma to come back home with the kids. I just never imagined that decision would come from her pai

The silence that followed felt deafening.I threw the phone onto the couch and sank down slowly beside it, my legs giving out beneath me. My arms rested on my knees, but my fingers clenched and unclenched like they didn’t know what to do with themselves.Stefano had been standing a few feet away all this while. I’d almost forgotten. He crouched down in front of me, his hands hovering between wanting to touch me and not sure if he should.“Emma…” His voice was soft. “What’s going on? What did your mother say? Who’s…” He trailed off, staring at my face. “Who’s dying?”I couldn’t answer. I opened my mouth, but nothing came out.The sobs hit before I even realized they were forming. I buried my face in my hands as my body shook.“Hey, hey…” Stefano leaned closer, alarmed. “Emma, please… you have to say something. You know I can’t stand seeing you like this.”I didn’t respond. I couldn’t. I could barely breathe through the sobs.“Unbelievable,” Alex’s voice cut in like a blade. “I leave he

EMMA“Your father has cancer.”The words echoed in my head like they were foreign. They sounded like something that didn’t belong in the conversation I was having with my parents.I let out a short, incredulous chuckle. “What are you talking about, Mum? Is this some kind of prank?”Growing up, my mum was excellent at pranking us and my dad. That had to be it.There was a pause on the other end. And then her voice croaked, “Do you really think I’m capable of joking about something like this?”My lips parted, but I didn’t know what to say.No. No, of course she wasn’t capable of that. My mother never pranked us with serious matters. And that was exactly why I was more confused. Why was she starting now?Unless she wasn’t joking.A tight pressure wrapped around my throat, making it hard to breathe. “So… you’re being serious?” I asked, the words scraping out of me.Her silence told me everything before she even spoke.“I wish that wasn't the case, sweetheart.”I stumbled back a step, my g

I stared at Stefano, caught off guard by the sharpness in his tone. He’d never spoken to me like that before, with such bitterness. But almost immediately, he seemed to realize it himself. “Fuck, I'm sorry,” he said, running a hand over his face. “I shouldn’t have said it like that. It’s just... that guy infuriates me.” He looked away, his jaw clenching. “Yesterday, before I left, he challenged me. He told me I would only continue to be in your and the kids' life if he allowed it.” “What?” My spine straightened. “He said that to you?” “Yes,” Stefano replied, his eyes finding mine again. “I know we’re not technically dating, Emma. But even so, he doesn’t have the right to make those kinds of declarations.” I blinked, finally realizing where Stefano's bitterness was coming from. Alex had thrown that challenge at him only for me to go out all day with him and the kids. My jaw tightened. “I didn’t know, Stefano.” “You do now, Emma,” Stefano said. “But what do you plan to do about i

EMMABy the time we pulled into the driveway of my house, the sun had long disappeared.I was tired. My legs ached. My hair was still damp. But the kids were in the back seat humming some random tune they'd made up after dinner, and Alex was humming along like he knew it too.We shouldn’t have stayed out that long. But every time I’d tried to say it was time to leave, the twins had given me those eyes and promised it would just be one more ride, then they would drag me or Alex back toward the next one while laughing for having had their way again.I let them have their way each time. I wasn't ashamed to say that my children had me wrapped around their finger. After we finally left the park, we had dinner at a small restaurant near the park, eating grilled chicken skewers and fries while the kids recapped their favorite slides for the umpteenth time. The day wasn’t what I had expected my day to look like when I woke up this morning. But I wasn’t complaining.I'd taken the kids to the w

Liam continued talking excitedly to his friends, rapid Spanish rolling off his tongue as he told them about the “magic dinosaur” I had made. He kept gesturing animatedly toward me.A moment later, Liana came skipping toward us, her hair clinging in curls to her little cheeks. Emma followed behind, her expression relaxed.Liana immediately jumped into the conversation, greeting the boys and rolling off in Spanish."I'm hungry," Liana suddenly declared, cutting off a story Liam had been midway through. She turned to Emma, tugging lightly at her hand. “Can we eat something now?”“Of course, sweetie.” Emma nodded at her before looking at me.I nodded without her having to speak. “I will go grab the snacks. You guys can go to the eating area.”“I'll go with you, Dad,” Liam said.I nodded, ruffling his wet hair.Liam gave his friends a quick goodbye, and he and I went to retrieve the snacks from the duffel bag in the changing room locker.Afterwards, we headed back to the shaded eating area
