I hugged Liam and Liana like my life depended on it. And maybe it did. Maybe some part of me had been slowly dying these past six years without knowing why, apart from the fact that I didn't have Emma, of course.

When they began to squirm, I realized they were getting uncomfortable with the prolonged hug. I loosened my hold and let out an awkward laugh.

“Sorry. I just… I’m really happy to see you guys.” I glanced between them. “Are you happy to see me too?”

Liana nodded with a shy smile while Liam beamed and squealed, “Yes, Daddy!”

I grinned and reached for the bag I brought. “I brought some gifts. Want to see?”

They both nodded quickly, their little hands reaching in anticipation. I handed the boxes to them, my heart thudding. I couldn’t stop smiling.

Until they opened them.

The excitement on their faces faltered as soon as the paper came off. Liana stared at the doll. Liam frowned at the Ironman toy.

My stomach dropped.

“What’s wrong?” I asked. “You don’t like them?”

Liam shook his

Emma should have allowed an exclusive time for Alex. Yes he made a mistake, but Emma hiding also didn’t help.

ALEXI was standing in front of Emma’s door, holding a gift bag like it weighed ten times more than it did. My fingers tightened around the handles, and I swallowed hard.“Hi, I’m Alex. I’m your dad. I—uh—”I stopped and shook my head. That sounded stiff. Weird.“Hey, I got you something… and if it’s okay with you, I’d really like to be in your life.”No. Too desperate.I sighed and looked down at the bag again. I had bought an Ironman toy for Liam and a Cinderella doll for Liana. It wasn't anything fancy because I didn't want my children's first impression of drawing close to me to be because I bought them expensive gifts.Just something thoughtful. Something I would've loved to give them on any ordinary day, if there had ever been ordinary days with them. This wasn’t just any visit, though. This was me walking into their lives for the very first time.I forced a deep breath into my lungs. Raising my free hand, I finally pressed the bell.I didn’t know if Emma had talked to them alre

EMMAThe next day was a Saturday, and I couldn't be more grateful for it.Even if today had been a workday, I would've skipped it. I didn't want to work on anything. I just needed my children. After everything that happened yesterday, I needed this day with them. I needed to feel their warmth. Their joy. Their laughter.Getting out of bed and freshening up, I moved into the kitchen to start breakfast. My hands worked like on autopilot, cracking eggs, buttering toast, slicing fruit, while my mind spun in circles. I was still yet to tell Liam and Liana about Alex. Before my thoughts could spiral too far, Liam and Liana came bursting into the kitchen, giggling and chasing each other around the kitchen like they hadn't just had one of the scariest days of their little lives yesterday. I turned, my heart squeezing."Be careful, please," I called out gently, but a smile stretched my lips. They finally slowed and stood side by side, breathing heavily."Good morning, Mummy!" they chimed in un

After Stefano left, I walked quietly back into the kids’ room. Stefano had thoughtfully turned the lights off and drawn the curtains for them, leaving the room dim enough to help them sleep better.Walking forward, I stood over them for some time. Liam’s little chest rose and fell in a steady rhythm, his lips slightly parted. Liana’s arm had already found her stuffed bunny and wrapped around it.I sat down on the small couch near the window and let myself sink back into the cushions. Watching them like this… peaceful, unbothered by anything in the world, always made me feel two things at once: peace and fear. They were everything to me. My biggest reasons for keeping on after racing Baltimore. They were mine. Just mine. But now it felt like that was slipping out of my hands.I didn’t realize I was crying until a warm drop landed on the back of my hand. Then another. And another. A sob escaped my throat before I could hold it in, and soon I was shaking quietly as tears ran down my chee

EMMAI slid into the backseat and immediately wrapped my arm around Liana, who was still sniffling softly. Her small body trembled as she pressed her face into the crook of my neck. I held her tighter, my palm stroking her back slowly."It's okay," I whispered, trying to make my voice as steady as I could. "Everything's okay, sweetheart."Stefano didn't say anything as he started the car. The engine came to life, but the silence in the vehicle felt louder than anything. After a few more minutes, Liana's crying slowed. Her tiny fingers curled around the collar of my blouse, and she let out a shaky breath before pulling back just a little. Her eyes were still watery, her lashes clumped together. I wiped her cheeks with my thumb."What did that bad man want, Mummy?"I stiffened, my heart lurching. "No, no, baby," I said quickly, shaking my head. "That man... he's not a bad man.""But... but he beat Uncle Faano," she whispered, her lips wobbling.I fumbled for words. My fingers tightened

ALEXFlabbergasted didn’t even begin to cover what I felt after the words that left Emma's mouth.I stood there, frozen, her words echoing in my ears like some kind of hallucination I couldn’t wake up from."You're their father."My whole world tilted sideways. My chest felt so tight that I could barely breathe. Finally, I began moving toward her, my movements slow, my legs stiff like they were unsure what the hell was going on. Then I stopped in front of her.“What did you say?” I asked, my voice low and careful. “Emma… what did you just say?”I had to be sure I hadn’t imagined it. That it wasn’t some cruel joke my brain decided to play on me. I needed her to say it again.Another tear slid down her cheek, and she looked me dead in the eye. “You’re their father, Alex,” she said again. “They’re yours.”I didn’t move for several seconds. My gaze drifted over her shoulder to the backseat of the car, where the twins were pressed against the window, watching us like we were a scene on a s
