ELENA'S POV

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t breathe.

The man who had tried to help me was dead. His body lay still on the cold pavement, a dark pool of blood spreading beneath him.

I wanted to scream, to fight, to run—but Alessandro’s grip on my wrist was unyielding.

"Look at me, amore," he murmured.

I tore my gaze away from the lifeless body and met his eyes. They were calm, too calm—like he had just swatted away an inconvenience rather than murdered someone in front of me.

"I didn’t want to do that," he said, almost bored. "But you left me no choice."

A shudder ran through me.

"You’re a monster," I whispered.

His lips curled into a small smile. "I’ve been called worse."

The air was thick with the scent of blood and gasoline. Alessandro’s men stood in formation behind him, their weapons still drawn, waiting for his next command.

I could feel their eyes on me.

I was trapped.

Again.

Alessandro lifted my chin with his fingers, forcing me to look at him. "This foolishness ends tonight, cara. No more running."

I clenched my jaw.

I wouldn’t let this be the end.

Not yet.

[A Calculated Risk]

Alessandro nodded toward his men. "Clean this up."

One of them—tall, broad, face-like a brick wall—stepped forward and reached for the dead man’s body.

A rush of anger and grief surged through me. This man had risked his life to help me, and now they were treating him like garbage.

I couldn’t let this happen.

I wouldn’t.

Acting on pure instinct, I lunged.

With all my strength, I twisted my body, breaking free from Alessandro’s grip. His surprise gave me just enough time to snatch the gun from the waistband of the man standing closest to me.

A shocked gasp rippled through the group.

I raised the gun, my hands shaking.

"Step back," I ordered, my voice sharp despite the hammering of my heart.

Alessandro laughed.

Like this was a joke.

"Elena," he said smoothly, "put the gun down."

I tightened my grip.

"Not another step," I warned.

The men hesitated, their gazes flicking toward Alessandro, waiting for his signal.

He tilted his head, studying me.

Then, to my horror, he stepped closer.

I jerked the gun up, pointing it straight at his chest. "I said, don’t move!"

He didn’t stop.

"Go ahead," he taunted. "Pull the trigger."

I swallowed hard.

I should.

I needed to.

But my hands trembled. My breathing was uneven. Every part of me screamed to act, but something inside me froze.

Alessandro saw it.

And he smirked.

"You’re not a killer, amore," he whispered, stepping even closer. "Not yet."

Then, like lightning, he moved.

Before I could react, his hand closed over mine, twisting the gun away with terrifying ease. Pain shot through my wrist as he disarmed me, the weapon clattering to the ground.

I gasped, trying to pull away, but his grip was like iron.

"You almost had me," he murmured, his lips brushing my ear. "Almost."

Panic exploded inside me.

"No!" I fought, thrashing against him, but he caught both my wrists and yanked me flush against his chest.

His breath was warm against my skin. "This little rebellion of yours ends now."

My pulse hammered. "You can’t keep me here forever."

He let out a soft chuckle. "Oh, cara," he whispered, his grip tightening. "Watch me."

[The Lock and Key]

Minutes later, I was back inside the estate.

The doors slammed shut behind me, the sound echoing like the final nail in my coffin.

Alessandro’s men stood at attention, blocking every possible escape. The gun was gone. My chance was gone.

And Alessandro?

He was calm. Like he had won some twisted games.

I turned to him, my hands still shaking. "Why don’t you just kill me?" I spat.

His brows lifted slightly. "Is that what you want?"

I glared at him. "I want to be free."

Alessandro sighed, as if my defiance was some great burden to him. "You don’t understand yet, do you?"

He stepped closer, and I refused to step back.

"You were mine the moment you said 'I do,'" he murmured.

I clenched my fists. "That wasn’t a choice."

His lips curved. "And yet, here we are."

My rage was blinding. "You can chain me here, Alessandro, but you’ll never break me."

His expression shifted. Something dark flickered in his eyes—something I couldn’t read.

"Is that so?" he mused.

Then, without another word, he reached into his pocket and pulled out…

A key.

I frowned. "What’s that?"

Alessandro’s gaze locked onto mine.

And then—

He walked to the nearest door, inserted the key, and turned the lock.

Click.

The door swung open, revealing… a hallway lined with doors.

My stomach dropped.

"This," Alessandro murmured, stepping aside, "is your new home."

I took a slow step forward, peering inside.

The walls were white, pristine, sterile. The silence was suffocating.

A prison.

I turned back to him, my chest tight. "You’re locking me away?"

He smiled—cold and calculated. "I told you, amore. No more running."

Dread coiled in my gut.

He wasn’t just keeping me inside.

He was keeping me isolated.

I took a shaky breath. "You won’t win."

Alessandro leaned in, his lips brushing my ear. "I already have."

Then—

The door slammed shut behind me.

Darkness swallowed me whole.

I spun, my hands flying to the door.

Locked.

Panic crashed over me.

I pounded on the wood. "Let me out!"

No answer.

Only silence.

I turned, pressing my back against the wall, my breathing ragged.

Think, Elena. Think.

I wasn’t trapped.

Not forever.

Because if Alessandro thought this was over—

He was dead wrong.

Elena Pov The word hung there—Syndicate—like a curse. My throat felt tight. I didn’t say anything. Couldn’t. The stranger’s voice still echoed in my ears, but all I could see was Alessandro lying pale and unmoving by the riverbank, his chest rising only slightly, like the air itself hesitated before entering his lungs.Back to that place? The place that haunted his nightmares, that twisted his voice into something hollow and sharp every time he spoke of it?Everything inside me screamed no.But there was no time to scream. No time to beg for another option. The whir of helicopters still lingered in the distance—closer, angrier. If I hesitated now, I’d lose him.“Let’s go,” I said, the words catching in my throat. The stranger didn’t smile. He just nodded once and turned back into the forest.I bent down, my arms trembling, and gathered Alessandro against me. His skin was cold against mine. My body felt like it had been shattered into pieces—but I moved anyway. I moved because I had t

But the trees are no longer enough. The sound is closer, the engine low and vibrating the air. I look to the stranger, watching as he stiffens, curses under his breath. The look on his face shifts—utterly focused, eyes narrowing like a predator’s. His grip on his weapons tightens."We’ve been found," he mutters. My stomach drops like a rock. The forest around me feels like it’s closing in. We’ve only just made it this far, and now they’re here. I can’t lose Alessandro now. I won’t. The fear that gnaws at me is insatiable, but there’s no time for panic. Not yet. Not until we’re safe. But with every second that passes, I can feel the threat getting closer—coming for us."Go!" the stranger barks, his voice snapping through my frenzied thoughts. “We don’t have time! They’ve got thermal vision—we need cover!”

Elena povThe figure in the cave entrance looms like a specter, cloaked in darkness. My heart stops, my breath catching in my throat. His voice cuts through the silence, commanding and chilling. “Come with me—if you want him to live.” The words reverberate in my mind, each one a jagged shard of fear, and I can’t move, can’t think. My eyes flick between him and Alessandro, who’s slumped against the cave wall. The weight of the moment is suffocating. My instincts scream at me to run, but where? My only choice is to decide—quickly—if I’m going to trust him, or if this is the trap I’ve been fearing. He doesn’t move, doesn’t even flinch as I stare at him, but his presence fills the entire space. It's overwhelming, suffocating, like the air itself has thickened. His eyes bore into me, but I can’t read him. The seconds stretch, dragging with the weight of everything hanging in the balance. Save Alessandro. But trust this man? My body is frozen between fear and desperation. I can’t afford t

The air in the cave felt thick with tension, each breath Elena took a struggle against the weight of fear pressing on her chest. But it was the voice—her name, whispered through the trees—that was the true torment. It was familiar, a sound that should have been comforting. But instead, it rattled through her bones like a cold wind.“Elena…”Her heart stuttered in her chest. The voice was unmistakable, too clear to be mistaken. But it wasn’t a voice that should be calling her.“Elena…” The sound slithered through the darkened forest, soft and echoing, growing closer with each passing second. The breath caught in her throat as she tightened her grip on Alessandro’s hand. His fingers felt cold beneath hers, the warmth of life slipping away with every second. She couldn’t let fear paralyze her, not now, not when they were so close to safety. But she was terrified. Terrified of the voice—terrified of what it meant. It was the kind of fear that held her in place, immobilizing her, as if ans

  • Trapped with the Mafia Boss   Chapter 40

Elena Pov The forest is still.Still in that terrifying way—where silence feels too complete, too deliberate. Every leaf is holding its breath. Even the wind seems to hesitate.I crouch low beside Alessandro, his body slumped against the thick roots of a gnarled tree. His breath is shallow, ragged—each exhale a whisper against my ear. My hand trembles as I press against his chest, checking for warmth, for movement. He’s alive, but barely. Then I hear it.That voice.Calm. Icy. Controlled."Run all you want. We always find you."It’s not a threat. It’s a promise. My heart slams against my ribs like a trapped animal, and for a brief moment, I can’t breathe. I glance through the foliage. Nothing. Just darkness. Trees. Shadows that could be anything. Or anyone. But I feel it. We’re surrounded.I grip the dagger tighter in my hand and turn to Alessandro. “We have to move,” I whisper, though I know it’s a miracle he’s still conscious. His lips part, but no words come. Just a groan. Pain, f

Elena povI hold my breath, the sound of the footsteps above the bunker reverberating through my entire body. The silence that follows feels heavier than anything I’ve ever known. Every muscle in me is tense, aching from exhaustion, but my mind is sharp. The knife in my hand is cold, and my fingers tremble against the handle. Stay calm, I tell myself.I press my ear to the floor of the bunker, straining to hear through the thick wood. Every second feels like an eternity. I wish I could see what’s happening above us—wish I could know who’s there. But I can’t. All I know is that they’ve found us. I hear the faint sound of something moving—a shift in the air, a shadow crossing the cracks in the ceiling. It’s not the hunter. My stomach drops. Shadow Blades. The very people I’ve feared for days now. They’ve come for us, and this time, there’s no running.I try to steady my breathing. The muffled sounds of their footsteps are precise, measured. Cold. They know what they’re doing. These are
