THE KINGMAKER'S MAFIA BRIDE

THE KINGMAKER'S MAFIA BRIDE

Elena Hart makes presidents. She has never lost a campaign, and the most powerful men in the country wait hours for fifteen minutes of her time. On the night her candidate wins the primary, her father dies, and her lawyer delivers a second shock: she has been legally married for six years to Alexander Moretti, heir to the city's most feared crime family. Her father's will gives her one condition. Stay married for ninety days, or lose everything. His last letter adds a warning: he didn't die of natural causes, and the man beside her knows who killed him. Elena storms into Alexander's world with divorce papers and a three-day ultimatum. He refuses, and he won't say why. Soon someone is hunting her, her best friend is taken, and a video seems to show Alexander standing over her father's body. Trapped under the same roof, two brilliant, stubborn, impossibly well-matched people go to war. She dismantles his family with a binder. He outmaneuvers her with a smile. Between pillow-wall treaties and Nonna's meddling, they start to fall. But her father's secret runs deeper than either knows: a debt written in blood, an archive only Elena can decode, and a betrayal from the person she trusts most. To survive, she must stop running from her marriage and start fighting beside the man she swore to leave.

Chapter: Chapter Six
"Say it's fake."Elena's voice came out thin. The video had ended. The phone showed a black rectangle, and her thumb was still on the screen like she could press play and get a different ending."I can't," Alexander said."Say it anyway.""It's not fake. I was there."She laid the phone face down on the metal table, slowly, because her hands wanted to throw it. The man at the monitors had left. The door clicked shut behind him. Enzo stood against the far wall with his eyes on the floor. The lights hummed."You were in my father's study," she said. "He was in his chair, and you took something out of his drawer.""Yes.""And you left him there.""Yes.""For Mrs. Dunn to find.""Yes, Elena.""Stop saying yes!" It cracked off the concrete. Her chin had started to shake, and she pressed her lips together until it quit. "Stop agreeing with me like you're giving a statement.""What do you want me to say?""That it isn't what it looks like.""It's exactly what it looks like." He kept his hand

"Don't call him."Alexander's thumb stopped over his cousin's name. Elena had her hand wrapped around his wrist. She hadn't planned that. His skin was hot and his pulse was hammering under her fingers."He has Sofia.""Which is why you don't call him." She kept her voice flat. "Look at your hand."He looked. It was shaking."You'll shout, and he'll hear that he got to you. After that, he's running the call." She let go slowly. "Let me do it.""He's my cousin.""He aimed a rifle at your car.""I know what he did." His voice cracked on the last word. He turned his head so nobody could see his face. Enzo studied the floor. The man at the monitors suddenly had to adjust a screen that didn't need adjusting.Elena waited. When Alexander turned back, his face was smooth again, but a muscle was jumping in his jaw."He taught me to drive," he said. "Stick shift, in my father's old Alfa. I stalled it nine times and he never laughed once. He stood next to me at my mother's funeral the whole day.

Chapter: Chapter Four
"Down!"Alexander's hand landed between her shoulder blades and pushed. Elena's face hit the leather seat just as the rear window cracked. It wasn't loud. That was the part she'd remember. No movie bang, just a flat, hard slap, like someone dropping a phone book on concrete. A white web spread across the glass. Nothing came through it."It's armored," Alexander said, close to her ear. "Stay down. It's armored.""Then why are you holding my head?""Habit.""Enzo!""I see him!" Enzo's voice cracked, and the car lurched left so hard her shoulder slammed into the door. "Sorry! Sorry, Mrs. Moretti!""Don't call me that while someone is shooting at us!""Which time would you prefer?""Drive!"Another slap against the glass. Then a third. Elena counted them the way she counted everything. Three. A man firing three rounds into an armored car wasn't trying to kill her. He was trying to scare her. Or slow them down. She wedged her phone against the seat with shaking fingers. The call was still

Chapter: Chapter Three
“Who?”Elena was on her feet. She didn’t remember standing. Her knees had made the decision without her.Alexander hadn’t moved from the leather chair. “I don’t know.”“The letter says you do.”“The letter says I know who did it. It doesn’t say I’ll say it in a room where a man is taking notes.”Kessler took off his glasses. “I’m not taking notes.”“You’re memorizing. Same thing.” Alexander looked at her. “Sit down, Elena. Let him finish.”“Don’t tell me what to do.”“Then stand. But let him finish.”She stood. Kessler put his glasses back on and found his place.“’I married you to him for three reasons. The first is that he’s the only man alive who can keep you breathing. The second is that his family owes mine a debt they’ll never admit to. The third I’ll leave for you to work out, because you’re better at that than I ever was.’”A debt. Her father had never lent anybody a dollar. He’d once made her return a birthday card because the sender spelled his name wrong.“You’ll want to ha

Chapter: chapter Two
“Say it again.” “I said I’m sorry for your loss, Mrs. Moretti.” “Don’t call me that.” “It’s your name.” “It’s a typo.” Elena kept her eyes on his face and her feet planted on the grass. The last mourners had drifted toward the cars. Sofia hung back by a tree, gripping her phone like a weapon. Alexander Moretti was taller than she’d expected. His charcoal suit was cut so well that every other black suit at the burial looked rented. He had grey eyes and a thin scar through his left eyebrow that she decided not to look at. A watch with a worn leather strap sat on his wrist. He didn’t fidget, check it, or glance at her mouth. She had met senators who couldn’t stand still for ten seconds, and this man looked like he could stand there until spring. “You called Harold Kessler at six-forty,” she said. “I did.” “My father was alive at six-forty.” “Was he?” He said it gently, which made it worse. “Did anyone tell you how long he’d been in that chair when Mrs. Dunn found him?” Her stom

Chapter: Chapter one
"Stop touching your tie.”Paul Whitaker dropped his hand. The tie was crooked anyway. Elena reached up and fixed it with two quick tugs, the way she had every night for eleven months.“Ninety seconds,” she said. “Thank New Hampshire. Thank your wife. Do not say the word inevitable.”“We won by nine points. It’s accurate.”“It’s accurate and it sounds like you already bought the house. Say humbled.”“I’m not humbled. I’m thrilled.”“Then say thrilled and humbled. Both. Nobody checks.” She flattened his lapel with her palm. “Go.”He went. The curtain swallowed him, and a second later the ballroom on the other side of it roared. Elena stayed in the wings with her arms folded and mouthed his opening line along with him. He hit it perfectly. She let out a breath she’d been holding since four o’clock that afternoon. Her clutch buzzed against her hip.She ignored it. It buzzed again. By the sixth time, Sofia was at her elbow, holding up her own phone like evidence.“Harold Kessler has been c
