The Woman He Forgot to Cherish

The Woman He Forgot to Cherish

The Woman He Forgot to Cherish For three years, Lena Hartwell has loved her boss and fiancé, Damian Cross, with everything she has. She has swallowed his coldness, translated his silences, and told herself that love is a lamp you keep lit, even when he lets it burn low. Then Celeste Marlowe arrives. She is tall, graceful, and soft-spoken, and she seems to have been made to be adored. She cries at the right moments, apologizes at the right times, and turns every small slight into proof that Lena is petty, needy, and jealous. Soon the whole company believes it, and so does Damian. Every time Lena tries to speak up, he tells her to grow up and reminds her how easily an engagement can be called off. Lena keeps making room for the woman who is taking her place, first at work, then at her dinner table, and then in her own home. But when a devastating accident leaves her lying on a roadside while Damian rushes someone else to safety, everything changes. She wakes with her memory gone, and with it the love, the jealousy, and the fear that once ruled her. Now Damian is finally beginning to see what he threw away, and Celeste's perfect mask is starting to slip. But the woman he wants back is no longer the one who would wait for him. A slow-burn story of betrayal, gaslighting, and the quiet power of walking away. I can also write a shorter version for a book cover, or one in a different tone, such as more dramatic or more mysterious.

Chapter: Chapter 30
Chapter Thirty: The Orange TreeFive years laterThe orange tree arrived on a Saturday in October, in a wooden crate, on the back of a flatbed truck. It was not a large tree. It stood perhaps five feet tall, with a slender gray trunk and a crown of dark glossy leaves, and it had been grown, according to the label, in a nursery in the south of Spain from a cutting of a very old stock. Two men in green overalls lifted it down with great care, as though it were a sleeping child, and carried it up the long white path of Hollis Park toward the great Victorian glasshouse that stood at the end, bright and clear in the morning sun.Behind them, at a respectful distance, walked a procession. It was an odd, assorted little company. At the head, leaning on a plain black cane that had once belonged to a very old and very stubborn man, came a small, silver-haired woman in a plum-colored coat. She was seventy-one that spring, and she walked slowly now, with a faint rolling gait, but her eyes behind

Chapter Twenty-Nine: The Glasshouse in JuneIt did not rain on the day of the wedding.Ruth said afterward that it was the only miracle she had ever witnessed in her life, and that she had been prepared to complain to somebody if it had gone the other way. The morning dawned clear and gold and warm, the first perfect morning of June, with a sky the color of a robin's egg and a breeze that carried the scent of cut grass across the whole length of Hollis Park. The roses along the garden wall had come out overnight. The lawns steamed gently in the sun. And the great Victorian glasshouse, with its hundred thousand panes of glass, stood at the end of the long white path like a ship made of light.Inside it, in a small potting room behind the orchid hall, a woman in a deep blue dress was being fussed over by three people at once."Hold still," said Ruth."I am holding still.""You're fidgeting.""I'm breathing. It's a necessary function.""Breathe more quietly." Ruth tweaked a pin out of Le

Chapter Twenty-Eight: The Window TableAdrian Vance earned his dinner the slow way.He did not know, at the beginning, that this was what he was doing. He told himself, on those cold January mornings, that he was merely putting his affairs in order. It was a sensible thing for any man to do after a crisis. He had made a confession in front of a board of directors, in front of witnesses, in front of a lawyer who had warned him not to, and it had seemed to him, in the aftermath, that a confession that stopped at words was only a performance. So he went to the regulators. He went on a Tuesday, a week after the signing, in a gray suit and a charcoal tie, with Mrs. Osei beside him carrying a leather briefcase and a look of grim and exquisite disapproval. They sat in a windowless office on the ninth floor of the Financial Conduct Authority for six hours. He answered every question. He handed over every email, every payment record, every scrap of correspondence with a woman who had called he

Chapter Twenty-Seven: What Damian LearnedHe had been standing in the car park for forty minutes.Damian did not know this precisely. He had stopped looking at his watch at about the twenty-minute mark, when he realized that he had checked it eleven times and absorbed none of the information. He knew only that the snow had been falling when he arrived and was falling still, that his shoes had long since soaked through, and that somewhere in the long gray building on the hill, a woman he had wronged was sitting at a table, speaking to the one person in the world he most wanted to see.Four Saturdays, he thought. This is the fourth. He had come the first time in December, in a rented car, with a speech prepared. He had parked at the far end of the lot, rehearsed it twice in the mirror, and sat for an hour and ten minutes with his hands on the wheel. Then he had driven home. The second Saturday he had gotten as far as the visitors' center door. The third, he had spoken to the guard at th

Chapter Twenty-Six: OrangesSnow fell on the day she went to see Celeste. It had been falling since dawn, soft and thick and windless, the big slow flakes of deep January, and by noon the whole of Halbrook lay under it like a sleeper under a quilt. The roofs were white. The hedges were white. Even the long gray wall of the correctional facility on the hill had been gentled by it, its razor wire furred with frost, its watchtowers capped with white like the hats of small, stern gnomes.Lena stood at the foot of the visitors' path with her collar turned up and a paper bag in her gloved hands, and she looked at the building for a long moment before she went in.Three months had passed since the signing. They had been, by any ordinary measure, a very strange season. The newspapers had been full of it for a fortnight, a headline each morning, CROSS MERIDIAN SCANDAL, TRUST FORGERY, ASSISTANT CHARGED. Then, as such things do, the noise had faded. The cameras had gone away. The company had sur

Chapter Twenty-Five: The Rooftop GardenThey did not speak in the boardroom. It seemed to both of them, without a word passing, that this was not a conversation for a room full of leather chairs and the lingering smell of cold coffee. Damian merely stood, when the last of the directors had filed out, and looked at her across the length of the table. Then he turned and walked to the door. After a moment's hesitation, Lena followed. They rode the elevator in silence. It rose past thirty-two, thirty-three, thirty-four, and the doors opened onto a short flight of stairs, and a heavy glass door, and the cold evening air.The rooftop garden of the Cross Meridian Group was a long, narrow terrace laid out along the east side of the tower, bordered by clipped boxwood and potted maples and a low glass balustrade. In summer it was crowded at lunchtime. In October, at dusk, it was empty. A few last leaves, red and gold, lay scattered on the paving stones. The wind came across the roofs in long co
