Killian

I really should not have asked Aspen out the way I did, but I had to because she was pushing too much. I hated those people that I called my parents and the last thing I wanted was anyone trying to convince me that they deserved forgiveness. My father was not even asking for it, but my mother did not deserve it. I took a deep breath and remained standing for a while and after some time, I stepped out of the room to meet Aspen standing by the door.

“I asked you to leave.” I told her. Reminding her of that fact. Aspen was so stubborn and I hated the look in her eyes. She was looking at me as if she pitied me, I did not want that. I hated that look in her eyes. The last thing that I wanted was pity, especially not from Aspen.

“How do you expect me to leave? It's Your Birthday–"

“Stop going on about that. Don't get me angry.” I warned her, slowly chewing on my gum. “And I'm leaving the house, you are coming with me. I suggest that you shit the fuck up and not mention my mother

Aspen Clear and I finally went home. The drive had been quiet, filled only with the sound of rain tapping against the car window and the occasional sniffle from me. Clear had not spoken much, lost in her own thoughts, probably replaying the encounter with our mother over and over in her mind. I had tried to speak, to explain a few things, but the words stuck in my throat. My mind was still spinning, still raw from the fear, the panic, and the weight of being unseen. As soon as we arrived, Clear went straight to her room. She dropped her bag beside the bed and collapsed onto the mattress, her body heavy with exhaustion. She did not even glance at me. Her breathing was steady but slow, a clear sign that her mind and body were done for the day. I watched her for a moment, wanting to speak, to say something comforting, but the words faltered again. She was gone in her world now, and I was left behind.I sank into the sitting room, the only quiet place in the house that felt empty enough

AspenFear hit me the moment my mother asked about our father. My chest tightened, and my stomach knotted as if someone had wrapped it in iron. My fingers trembled, clutching my bag as if it could hold me together. Every nerve in my body screamed at me to run, to disappear, to sink into the floor and vanish. I could barely breathe. My lips moved, but no sound came out at first. My mind spun, wild and panicked. The question was simple, but it felt like a trap. I had no words that would satisfy her. No lie that could survive her sharp, piercing gaze.Clear’s eyes searched mine, desperate. “Aspen,” she said quietly. “Where is he?”I tried to steady my trembling hands. My mouth opened and closed as I scrambled for something, anything that could sound true. The panic in my chest pressed harder, making my thoughts whirl uncontrollably.“He… he went to find you,” I said at last, voice shaking. “He… he said he had to bring you back, he was scared for your life, and he wanted to make sure you

ASPEN I walked down the hospital corridor with Clear behind me. The floor was too shiny, the lights too bright, and every sound echoed as if the building itself were holding its breath. I felt smaller with every step. Clear’s presence made it worse, because she belonged here in a way I never had. I had spent three years visiting my mother alone. I knew the rules. I knew how to move, when to speak, how to sit without being noticed. I had learned to erase myself in that room. Now my erasure would be tested against the living proof of the daughter my mother had lost.Clear followed a few steps behind, careful, deliberate. Her hoodie hung loosely over her thin frame. Her hair was short now, framing her face in a way that made her look older, sharper. I could see her hands clench at her sides. She hesitated in small, silent ways that betrayed her nervousness. I wanted to warn her. I wanted to tell her she did not know what she was walking into. The door came into view. Room 417.I paused.

Aspen The first punch had barely been thrown when the sound of heavy boots echoed from the mouth of the alley. The moment hung in suspension, and for a split second, I allowed myself to hope. Then, suddenly, the men froze. Their laughter faltered. The staggering sway that had carried them through drunken bravado faltered into hesitation.“Guards,” I whispered, more to myself than to Clear. She tightened her grip on my hand but did not look away from them. She never did. From the shadows emerged two large men, broad shoulders moving with purpose. They did not speak. They did not ask. Their presence alone shifted the energy of the alley. I felt the tension snap like a taut wire. The first man—the tallest of the drunks—took a step forward, squinting against the fading light. His confidence wavered. “It’s nothing,” he slurred. “We’re just—”Before he could finish, a solid fist collided with his chest, sending him staggering back against the concrete wall. The guard did not pause, did not

Aspen Killian leaned against the doorway of the study, dark eyes fixed on me like he was measuring risk in real time. His hands were clasped loosely in front of him, the faintest crease in his brow betraying his worry. I had learned to read him in months of living under his watchful presence. He was the kind of man who did not need to raise his voice to be heard, and his silence carried weight.“I want to take Clear out today,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady, light even, though my stomach tightened at his gaze. “Shopping. She hasn’t been out in the city for years. She deserves one afternoon that’s hers.”He shifted slightly, dark hair falling just over his forehead, and I noticed the small, human gesture that betrayed concern rather than authority. “You want to go into the city,” he said slowly, “without my guards in sight.”“Yes,” I said firmly. “Just us. She should feel normal, Killian. I’m asking you for that.”He studied me, silent. There was a long pause, the kind that s

Aspen Clear bounced on the balls of her feet as soon as we stepped inside the sitting room, eyes wide and sparkling with excitement. “Wow,” she said, her voice high with awe. “This place is… massive! It’s like a castle!”I chuckled, keeping my hands gently on her shoulders to make sure she didn’t run off. “It’s big,” I said lightly. “Bigger than you probably imagined, huh?”“Way bigger,” she said, spinning around in the entrance hall. “And everything is… shiny and fancy and—oh my gosh, the ceilings! Aspen, the ceilings are taller than our school gym!”I laughed softly. “You will get used to it,” I said, leading her further inside. “Let me show you around before you collapse from excitement.”She grabbed my hand, dragging me toward the living room. Her energy was relentless. She was like a whirlwind, eyes darting to every detail, touching the velvet couch, running her fingers over the polished wooden tables. “Look at this,” she said breathlessly. “Look at this chandelier! It is enormo
