Chapter 1 The 2,600 Hours She Hid

Author: Her Eyes
I tightened my grip on the phone, but kept my expression perfectly calm. I immediately closed the glaring pop-up running in the background and opened her sample music library instead.

"I would never. It's for my cousin. Lisa wanted to hear some of the new songs your company plans to release next year. She said she wanted to admire the work of the big boss herself, so I was looking for them. The interface has changed, and I can barely figure out how to use it anymore."

Just like how she had changed into a completely different person, and I had not even noticed.

Something in my throat burned more bitterly with every word.

The tension in Regina's eyes vanished instantly.

"You should've said so." She took the phone from me and handed it generously to my cousin. "Go ahead and listen. I happen to have a batch of AI-composed demos here. You young people should like them."

My cousin took the phone as though she had just struck gold, then looped her arm around Regina's and wheedled, "Regina, AI music composition is such a hot field right now! I heard it makes a ton of money. I've been out of school for half a year and still haven't found a job. Is there any way you could help me get my foot in the door?"

"Exactly! You're a big boss now, Regina. You've got to look after us when you can!"

"You're all too kind. Whatever I've accomplished today, I owe the most to Chase." She pulled out a chair and sat beside my cousin. Through the layers of people gathered around us, her gaze found mine, warm and deeply affectionate. If this had been half an hour earlier, that look would have moved me. It would have made me feel safe and secure.

Regina and I had met in middle school.

After graduation, we had secretly started dating and ended up attending the same high school. Our small county did not have many schools to begin with, and there were even fewer options for liberal arts students, so we wound up in the same class.

Back when we were young and foolish, we would lie facedown on our desks during breaks and pretend to sleep, each of us sneaking one earbud through our sleeves and covering an ear with it. The moment "A Thousand Years" began playing through that tiny MP3 player, sunlight fell across Regina's face. I quietly lifted my head from the crook of my arm and watched her pretending to sleep.

For some reason, in that instant, all I wanted was to protect her from every storm for the rest of my life.

But when did something go wrong between us? When had things gone so wrong that more than two thousand hours had been stolen from our marriage, and I had not noticed a thing?

"I'll put some music on for you guys. Everyone can listen together." Forcing down the chill spreading through my heart, I took the phone from Regina and connected it to the Bluetooth speaker.

Energetic electronic music immediately filled the room. Our relatives clapped and cheered, while Regina sat surrounded by everyone. The stubborn girl nobody had believed in back then was now seated at the head of the table, speaking confidently about the future of the industry.

And with the phone still in my hand, I swiped again.

The comic-book hero's username was "AlexDGreat." Her following list showed that they had been following each other for an entire year.

So it was not just more than two thousand hours stolen from me—it was 365 days.

Two years ago around this exact time, Regina had been holding me and laughing excitedly, tears glimmering in her eyes from sheer exhilaration as she said, "Chase, I found our opportunity. We're going to have money. We finally won't have to let people look down on us anymore. Finally, I'll be able to give you a good life. You won't have to ride your bike through the rain anymore just to deliver food for a few extra dollars."

She was in her early thirties then, so excited her hands trembled. I had laughed and teased her for still acting like a kid.

Now, I clenched my fists and opened their shared playlist.

Buried beneath the tracks she needed for her company and the songs currently topping the charts were a huge number of tracks that felt completely out of place: Lord Huron's "The Night We Met," Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me," and several cheesy, high-energy anthems from the teen movies and TV shows.

None of them matched Regina's tastes anymore.

These days, she listened exclusively to symphonies and talked about classical music. She had transformed herself into a successful businesswoman, surrounded by people eager to bask in her success.

My eyes stopped on the bio of AlexDGreat's profile: 'AI composer working hard to make money and chase my dreams!'

I stared at the name, and then I remembered.

A year ago, Regina's company had signed a group of newcomers. She had casually mentioned one of them when she came home, saying that a young man named Alex Reed was particularly talented.

"Forget everything unpleasant that happened. We can still be Regina and Chase."I lowered my eyes to her, then looked at the priceless ring and the old desk where I had once sat, still pushed tightly against Regina's.On the desktop, I could faintly make out the letters we had carved into it with a compass all those years ago—'RL & CF.'Regina Lockwood and Chase Foster. The engraving had not changed. But Regina still did not seem to understand. In her memories, 18-year-old Chase sat at this very desk, watching her pretend to sleep, always waiting for her. To her, those days had been beautiful and pure, a sanctuary she could return to after adulthood had made life complicated. But for me, they were only the beginning of exhaustion.Once we walked out of this place, there had been years of a secret relationship, the despair of being disowned by our parents, countless days and nights spent working just to get by, the agony of a perforated stomach ulcer, and the terror of nearly dyin

She had been trying to escape the marriage that required real effort after 30, to escape the slow erosion caused by the trivialities of everyday life. So she had built a monument to the past, forgetting that the only things that never changed were the dead.Regret came crashing over her like a tide. Regina began calling and texting me relentlessly, but I did not answer any of them—until a rainy night a month later, when she finally caught me outside my apartment building. She had lost a considerable amount of weight, and there were faint dark circles beneath her eyes. In one hand, she held the black umbrella we had used for years. In the other, she clutched her car keys, her eyes filled with the desperate pleading of someone making one final gamble."Chase, just one last time." Her voice was hoarse, as though she had not spoken in a long time. "I know you've made up your mind. I won't force you. But… Could you give me one more day? Just so we can part on good terms. Let me say goodb

Regina froze. She looked at me as though I had just said something completely absurd, her eyes widening in disbelief. "Divorce? Over something this small?""It wasn't just because of this."When I thought back to those days when I lived like my life did not matter, I felt some kind of divine intervention must have been watching over me. Back then, I would often wake in the middle of the night in unbearable pain, already hovering dangerously close to death. The thing Regina did most often was hold me in the middle of the night and cry. Then, before dawn, she would get up with red-rimmed eyes to brew tonic and make food that was easy on my stomach, taking me everywhere in search of doctors and treatments. Fortunately, we had been lucky enough to survive it all. My condition did not worsen. Then, our opportunity came. The company took off, and we finally turned our lives around. Once things settled down, however, my body had already been worn down, and my heart had grown quiet al

"You were innocent, technically, because the person you loved was me—the man who would sacrifice everything for you. Even the person you cheated on me with was just a shadow of the man I used to be. You were looking for something to hold on to in Alex. You didn't sleep with him, and you didn't give him money. You simply gave him all the patience and tenderness you used to give me."Regina, I don't understand you. If you wanted to relive your youth, why did you have to drag some young kid into it? I'm right here. Why are you trying to find the shadow of an 18-year-old me in him, as if you could somehow bring back the past by finding a piece of me in someone else?"Regina was left speechless. Her eyes darted away from mine. Her silence was the cruelest answer of all.The air in the living room seemed to freeze. As Regina stared into my resolute eyes, she finally realized that this time, what she had done would not be so easily brushed aside. Panic began to set in."Chase, I know I

Alex, on the other hand, was completely at ease. The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up. He jogged over and bowed deeply. "Mr. Foster! I'm Alex Reed! Ms. Lockwood is always telling me about you. She says you're the backbone of the company and that you're incredibly capable. If you hadn't gone out and negotiated that contract by yourself back then, the company would've gone under! I've always wanted a chance to learn from you. I finally got to meet you in person today!"I did not feel the disgust I had expected. The boy's eyes were clear and open, without a trace of guile. His entire heart was devoted to music. He saw Regina as a mentor and me as an idol.If anything, Regina stiffened the instant she saw me. Almost instinctively, she took half a step forward, subtly positioning herself between Alex and me."Since you're already here, why don't we have dinner together?" she suggested, quickly composing herself.I assumed she would take us to a nearby upscale restaurant. She cared a gr

When the young receptionist saw me, she was so startled that she nearly spilled her coffee. She hurriedly reached for the phone to call Regina, but I raised a hand and stopped her. "Don't bother her. I was just passing by and thought I'd take a look."With that, I headed straight for the recording studio.Through the enormous one-way glass window, I could see everything inside. Regina was wearing headphones, pointing at the sheet music as she spoke to the young man beside her. He was dressed simply in a hoodie and jeans, nodding along repeatedly, his expression focused yet full of youthful energy. The tenderness in Regina's expression, the way she watched him, was something I had not seen from her in years. At home, she was always sprawled on the couch scrolling through her phone. She barely paid attention to anything I said or any idea I brought up. Even when I asked what she wanted to eat, her answers were always, "Whatever," or "Anything's fine." The most she ever asked of me wa
