Fifty three: Mine

Finally, she removed the test result from the envelope. For a moment, she stared at it comprehensively, and then, she sighed.

"Oh, God," she muttered, dropping her hand on her chest. It was as if she was shocked, as well, it was as if she was relieved. What was the result?

"Ma?" I tapped her shoulder. "What does it say?"

Again, she sighed, stood up, and turned around to look at me. "It's negative." There was a smile on her face.

I wanted to smile back at her, but I just couldn't. If I did, it would hurt Dave.

Dave had once told me how important his locket was. He had said it made him feel like he wasn't so lonely as he truly was. He had said he never saw his mother, but she was close to his heart. So, now that this had to happen, wouldn't he be hurt that the woman he thought was his mom, wasn't?

Ah, shit, why him?

He stood up from his seat, looking quite hurt. Mom probably noticed how sad he looked, so she cupped his hands in hers.
