The closest hospital on the GPS was so far from where I had met Omar. It was killing me seeing Omar lye so helplessly in the backseat while I couldn’t get him to the hospital fast enough. It killed me to keep thinking of the possibility of us arriving too late at the hospital. I was shaking my head. I’d never ever be able to forgive myself.

I glanced at Omar and saw his eyes close.

“Hey, hey, hey!” I was telling him. “Omar wake up. Don’t you die on me, Omar, don’t you dare die on me.”

He opened his eyes to look at me but only half-way.

“I want you to try harder.” I told him. “Open your eyes. You are strong enough. Look, look, Omar, there’s the hospital in front. We are almost there. Don’t you close your eyes.”

As soon as I drove through the gates I began honking.
