She walked to the nurse's station and tried to look like someone who had not cried out her eyes a few moments ago. She tapped on the counter to alert the attention of the nurse, who was writing something down. The young girl raised her head and frowned before standing up to attend to her.
"How can I help you?"
"Hi, I am Vida Van Allen," she started and stopped because of the expression on the nurse's face. She did not need to speak for her to hear all of the unspoken words. The girl was judging her with all of her might and they had met for the first time.
"How can I help you?" she asked again as if Vida was wasting her time introducing herself. Vida wanted to pick a fight with the girl and tell her how she could never think of starting a conversation with her but she swallowed down all of her words. She was the one in need and it would be wrong for her to pick a fight with the nurse in charge of her father on the first day she got there.
"I am Mr. Van Allen's daughter and I was wondering who I could speak to regarding my father." The nurse's eyes went up and down, looking at her with some disgust in her eyes. The girl was still trying her best to be professional and not allow her personal feelings to shine through.
"Doctor Joe is not in now, so you can wait a few moments," she said and turned without a word back into the room. Vida stood there with a stunned expression on her face. She did not expect the nurse to act like that towards her.
"Don't you think you are being a little too rude?" Vida could not let it go.
"Rude?" the girl asked as she sat down. "Why would you call me rude? The doctor is not yet in and once he is, I will let him know you are here." The girl sustained her earlier tone. It was obvious that she had beef with her. She bent her head and murmured, "Took you long enough to come to see your father." She pretended as if she were speaking to herself but it was obvious she wanted her to hear.
Vida took a deep breath and turned and standing behind her was a middle-aged man in a doctor's coat. "Hi, you are a doctor." Vida closed the gap between them.
"I am..."
"Vida Van Allen," the man finished for her before a smile crossed his lips. "You are the daughter of Steve and Eve," he replied and she nodded. "Very nice to finally meet you. I am Joe," he said, stretching his hand to her.
"You are Doctor Joe!" she exclaimed and he nodded. "Oh goodness," she continued and he smiled at her. She took his hand and wondered how he knew her mom but that was not the reason she was there, so she pushed the curiosity out of her mind for now.
"You wanted to see me?" he asked and she nodded. "Well here I am." She knew that he must have overheard her talking with the nurse.
"My dad," she said, simply hoping he would tell her all she needed to know. "What is wrong with my dad?" she continued after he was not speaking immediately.
"He was rushed here yesterday and we had to put him on life support," he began. Vida did not know how but she fell, tears falling from both cheeks. She was trying her best not to cry but it did not seem to work. Knowing that her father was so sick that he had to be put on life support and she did not know anything about it angered her but feeling sad about the situation topped it all.
She cleared her throat as she wanted to speak but the tears were not done falling from her. "I am sorry," she sniffled as she tried to wipe away the tears with the tissue she was still holding from earlier. "What is wrong? Why does he need to be placed on life support?"
"I told Mr. Van Allen that he needed to be admitted to the hospital but he went through every medical advice." The doctor stopped as if something was restraining him from speaking. "I don't know if I really should be saying this," he said, confirming her suspicion.
"What do you mean by that?" She asked, knowing that there must be a reason he was saying that to her face.
"I can not discuss a patient without their consent."
"Even to their guardian?" she asked, furrowing her eyebrows at him.
"You are not..." he trailed off as his eyes caught James walking in the distance towards them. "I think your father or his assistant would be in a better place to explain that to you; all I know is that your father was rushed here after a second heart attack." the doctor walked away before her brain could process what he meant to say and how dangerous it sounded.
"What?" She turned to him and her eyes caught James. "James, what does the doctor mean by a second heart attack?"
Axel was left stunned by her reaction; he had been sure that things were getting better between them, but every time he seemed to be getting through to her, something came up and ruined the whole thing. He knew that going after her was going to be wasted effort, so he knew he had to find out what had happened in the ladies' room, as that was when everything changed. He walked into the room with all eyes on him, wondering what had just happened."Are we to continue the meeting without her?" One of the men found the courage to ask on behalf of everyone else.'Continue," Axel said, sitting in his chair. He was going to observe everyone there to know what had happened. He stared at a woman in particular, as he was sure she was the one behind the entire thing. She had stood up to go to the ladies' at the same time that Vida had gone and it was after the encounter that she came out angry and throwing a tantrum."Ms Andrea?" he said, stopping the meeting. The room fell dead silent as everyon
Vida got ready with Emily's help and brought her to the meeting venue. Axel had made sure to tell her that it was a brunch meeting, and she was glad that it would not be anything too formal for her. She walked in with the bodyguards that Axel had stationed outside to help her find her way in. As she walked, she felt her leg lose strength. One of the guards opened the door, and she saw Axel's eyes meet hers from the far end of the room. He had been staring at the door, waiting for her to come so the meeting could commence. He smiled a little and stood up from the head of the table, walking to her."You can leave now," he murmured to the guard before standing beside her and putting his hand to the small of her back to guide her through the large hall. "Don't be scared," he added in a whisper, and she whipped her head to him, wondering how he had figured out what she was feeling in that moment. She always knew that this moment was going to come, but still, she was not ready for it, no ma
"It's been only two days but I feel sore as if I ran up a mountain ten times," Emily groaned as they fell to the couch. Kat had insisted that they cancel the wedding planners that her father had hired and do everything by themselves, stating that this was the only fun fact about a wedding."I wonder why I listened to Kat; all of this would have been handled by a bunch of people who would get paid in the end," Vida said."Well, do you have the money to pay them?" Kat asked and they all took a breath, understanding what she meant."Well, who says I have to be the one who pays? Axel is there, and he is the one who wants to go in for this marriage, so don't you think he should be the one paying?" Vida asked. Her friends looked at her with a stunned expression. Even though it did not sound like something positive, this was the first time she talked about him, and her description did not sound like she was talking about a monster. "You know I am right, so I think we should call the planners
Vida forced herself to go through breakfast with Axel, constantly zoning out while he spoke. She did not like that he seemed happy doing what he wanted while she was stuck doing business. When breakfast was over, she practically ran out of the restaurant without looking back."Vida? Why do you look so angry? Did something happen when you were out?" Maria asked as soon as she ran into her in the hallway. Vida knew that saying that Acel's success had affected her mood was a bit too strange, but then it was her nanny, and she was sure she would understand. She also hated the fact that he seemed to have such a strong effect on her to change her mood so seriously. She had to swear that she was okay a few hours before meeting him earlier today."Vida? You're back," Kat said. Vida raised her eyes to see her friends dressed in comfy clothes walking towards her. For a moment, she had suddenly forgotten that they were around. She pressed her lips together as they stood in front of her."Where h
All of the snarky and hurtful words that Vida had been thinking of in her head to throw back at him had suddenly flown out as soon as she heard his compliment. She could not understand why he would say something so outright to her like that. Axel was thrilled to know that she was just as normal as he was. This was the first time he had seen her blush, and it made her cute. 'She was a girl after all,' he thought to himself. Maybe complimenting her often and catching her off guard would make her seem less terrifying anytime they met.Vida did not know how to respond to this compliment; she had caught him stealing glances at her multiple times, but the truth was that she had never thought he would be brave enough to compliment her directly to her face. She was a bit flattered to hear that, but coming from him made it all feel weird. She also found it suspicious that he was doing it out of the blue. Was this his way of buttering her up? Did he do this so he could have full control over ev
Vida stayed by the grave, and even though she did not keep track of time, she knew it had been a while. She ranted, bearing her heart to her father. After a while, she was frustrated that he was not going to be able to respond, so she dusted off his grave and stood up to leave. She dusted herself and stretched after sitting on the floor for too long before making her way through the other graves at the site back to her car.She slowed down when she saw Axel at her car. She did not need glasses to know he was the one, even though she could barely distinguish his face from such a distance. She bit her lips, knowing she could not avoid him now that he had latched himself to her car. She walked to him, gently put her feet down, and cleared her throat.Axel, who had his head down, raised his head slowly to her. "Hi there," he said with a smile. Vida could not understand why he was still standing there. Was he stupid enough not to be able to read the cues she threw at him earlier, or was he
