Vida walked back to the room with James tailing her; she did not want to have the conversation there in the open, so she asked him to follow her. "What does the doctor mean by a second heart attack?" she asked as soon as she heard the door close. "Does that mean that there was a first one? If there was a first one, then why was nothing done about it? Why did you and all the medical staff allow it to degenerate this way? What was the problem?" she ranted, the words pouring from her mouth all at once. She was not sure but everyone seemed too relaxed for the state her father was in.
"Ms. Van Allen," James said in a relaxed tone, and it seemed as if she was right about it.
"Why on earth does everyone seem so relaxed? My father is..." she trailed off, pointing to him as she turned her head, and the sight of all the machines sticking to him broke her heart. "Lying there like that, you seem too relaxed."
"Mr. Van Allen is just fine; he has received medical attention and is already responding to treatment." It sounded like good news, but it was certainly not what she wanted to hear. She did not know the kind of comfort she needed now, but she knew she needed some.
"If he is fine, then why is he lying in that bed like that? A fine man should be up and about his daily activities and not confined to a bed like an invalid."
James almost broke into a smile; it had been a while since he heard anyone speak like her. 'She sure was different from others,' he thought to himself.
"I need you to explain this minute what happened," she demanded. James knew there was no escape for him; she would press until she got all the answers she needed.
"Your dad had a heart attack about a week ago; when I asked him if I should call you, he said it was not a big deal and it was just his body's way of telling him that he was getting older; I could not reach out to you for that reason." James knew he might get the blame for not telling her so he decided to explain so she knew he tried his best.
"And then what did the doctor say?"
"They told him that he needed to be placed on bed rest and observation for at least two weeks but he said that he needed to get to work and he was fine so he left the hospital even after medical advice."
Vida took a long breath after hearing that, of course, her father had to act that way. "That stubborn old man," she exclaimed. When her father asked her why she was so stubborn, she always knew she inherited it from him.
She went to his side and pushed back the locks of hair from his face. "And he had another heart attack yesterday," James finished.
"And what did the doctor say was wrong?" She asked and then she realised that the doctor had implied that she was to his guardian. "The doctor was saying something about his guardian and..." she stopped when the door opened and a man who seemed to be in the same age group stepped into the room.
He was holding a bouquet of white flowers. He walked as if he were familiar with the environment; she stared at his face and there was no denying he was good-looking. His face was a perfect fit alongside everything on it. His jawline was perfectly sculpted, and his nose was the right size for his face. If this were any other circumstance, she would have commented on how good he looked, but seeing a random handsome stranger in her father's hospital room was not doing her any good.
"Who is this?" she said gently as she turned to James.
"I am standing right here; you can ask me that," he said. He set the flowers into the vase by the head side of her father. "I am Axel Manchester," he said, stretching his hand to her.
Instead of taking his hand, she turned to James and lifted her eyes at him. "And who is he?"
"He is the one who has been helping your father out. He and your father have a close relationship."
"How come I have never heard of you then?" This time her words were directed to Axel, who stood with his hands in his trousers since she had not taken her hand.
"Your father must have not spoken of me then," he replied with a cocky smile.
"Here, Mr. Manchetser, you can sit," James said, acting all cosy with him. She did not know him but she already did not like him.
Axel was left stunned by her reaction; he had been sure that things were getting better between them, but every time he seemed to be getting through to her, something came up and ruined the whole thing. He knew that going after her was going to be wasted effort, so he knew he had to find out what had happened in the ladies' room, as that was when everything changed. He walked into the room with all eyes on him, wondering what had just happened."Are we to continue the meeting without her?" One of the men found the courage to ask on behalf of everyone else.'Continue," Axel said, sitting in his chair. He was going to observe everyone there to know what had happened. He stared at a woman in particular, as he was sure she was the one behind the entire thing. She had stood up to go to the ladies' at the same time that Vida had gone and it was after the encounter that she came out angry and throwing a tantrum."Ms Andrea?" he said, stopping the meeting. The room fell dead silent as everyon
Vida got ready with Emily's help and brought her to the meeting venue. Axel had made sure to tell her that it was a brunch meeting, and she was glad that it would not be anything too formal for her. She walked in with the bodyguards that Axel had stationed outside to help her find her way in. As she walked, she felt her leg lose strength. One of the guards opened the door, and she saw Axel's eyes meet hers from the far end of the room. He had been staring at the door, waiting for her to come so the meeting could commence. He smiled a little and stood up from the head of the table, walking to her."You can leave now," he murmured to the guard before standing beside her and putting his hand to the small of her back to guide her through the large hall. "Don't be scared," he added in a whisper, and she whipped her head to him, wondering how he had figured out what she was feeling in that moment. She always knew that this moment was going to come, but still, she was not ready for it, no ma
"It's been only two days but I feel sore as if I ran up a mountain ten times," Emily groaned as they fell to the couch. Kat had insisted that they cancel the wedding planners that her father had hired and do everything by themselves, stating that this was the only fun fact about a wedding."I wonder why I listened to Kat; all of this would have been handled by a bunch of people who would get paid in the end," Vida said."Well, do you have the money to pay them?" Kat asked and they all took a breath, understanding what she meant."Well, who says I have to be the one who pays? Axel is there, and he is the one who wants to go in for this marriage, so don't you think he should be the one paying?" Vida asked. Her friends looked at her with a stunned expression. Even though it did not sound like something positive, this was the first time she talked about him, and her description did not sound like she was talking about a monster. "You know I am right, so I think we should call the planners
Vida forced herself to go through breakfast with Axel, constantly zoning out while he spoke. She did not like that he seemed happy doing what he wanted while she was stuck doing business. When breakfast was over, she practically ran out of the restaurant without looking back."Vida? Why do you look so angry? Did something happen when you were out?" Maria asked as soon as she ran into her in the hallway. Vida knew that saying that Acel's success had affected her mood was a bit too strange, but then it was her nanny, and she was sure she would understand. She also hated the fact that he seemed to have such a strong effect on her to change her mood so seriously. She had to swear that she was okay a few hours before meeting him earlier today."Vida? You're back," Kat said. Vida raised her eyes to see her friends dressed in comfy clothes walking towards her. For a moment, she had suddenly forgotten that they were around. She pressed her lips together as they stood in front of her."Where h
All of the snarky and hurtful words that Vida had been thinking of in her head to throw back at him had suddenly flown out as soon as she heard his compliment. She could not understand why he would say something so outright to her like that. Axel was thrilled to know that she was just as normal as he was. This was the first time he had seen her blush, and it made her cute. 'She was a girl after all,' he thought to himself. Maybe complimenting her often and catching her off guard would make her seem less terrifying anytime they met.Vida did not know how to respond to this compliment; she had caught him stealing glances at her multiple times, but the truth was that she had never thought he would be brave enough to compliment her directly to her face. She was a bit flattered to hear that, but coming from him made it all feel weird. She also found it suspicious that he was doing it out of the blue. Was this his way of buttering her up? Did he do this so he could have full control over ev
Vida stayed by the grave, and even though she did not keep track of time, she knew it had been a while. She ranted, bearing her heart to her father. After a while, she was frustrated that he was not going to be able to respond, so she dusted off his grave and stood up to leave. She dusted herself and stretched after sitting on the floor for too long before making her way through the other graves at the site back to her car.She slowed down when she saw Axel at her car. She did not need glasses to know he was the one, even though she could barely distinguish his face from such a distance. She bit her lips, knowing she could not avoid him now that he had latched himself to her car. She walked to him, gently put her feet down, and cleared her throat.Axel, who had his head down, raised his head slowly to her. "Hi there," he said with a smile. Vida could not understand why he was still standing there. Was he stupid enough not to be able to read the cues she threw at him earlier, or was he
