LOGINThe plain platinum band slid right off the top of the divorce papers as I jolted back against Dominic’s chest.
Before the ring could hit the marble floor and give us away, Dominic’s gloved left hand shot out and caught it in midair.
Neither of us moved. Ten feet down the dim gallery, Preston let out another loud, ragged groan behind his half-open study door, followed by the tinny sound of Chloe’s laughter over the speakerphone.
I steadied myself, tightening my grip on the silver Elysium case in my left hand as I eased back an inch from Dominic’s charcoal overcoat.
"What are you doing up here, Dominic?" I kept my voice to a whisper. "I thought you never set foot in your brother’s house."
"Preston left the front gate unlocked, and the housekeeper let me in twenty minutes ago to drop off the board’s quarterly audit," Dominic murmured, his gaze dropping from my face to the red signature at the bottom of the divorce agreement. He rolled my wedding band between his leather-clad fingers. "Though the audit is nowhere near as entertaining as watching my brother’s loyal little wife finally slip her leash."
Inside the study, the leather chair creaked as Preston stood up.
"Hold on a second, Chloe," Preston said, his voice suddenly much closer to the doorway. "My throat’s dry. Let me grab some water from the hall bar before we finish."
His footsteps neared the mahogany door.
If Preston caught me in the corridor with signed divorce papers and the locked Elysium compound before tomorrow morning’s board review, he’d lock down the house security system and take the case before I even made it down the stairs.
Before I could bolt for the staircase, Dominic hooked his arm around my waist and pulled me back into the dark alcove behind the wide marble pillar at the turn of the gallery.
My back hit the smooth stone wall just as Dominic stepped in front of me, blocking me from view with his broad frame. He planted the rubber tip of his black titanium cane right between the toes of my boots.
To keep my balance in the tight space, I braced my free hand against his lapel. The cuff of my trench coat rode up my forearm, baring the inside of my wrist—where a trace of the concentrated wild valerian and white neroli oil I’d distilled in the basement lab still lingered on my skin.
Dominic’s chest rose against my palm as he inhaled.
His shoulders went rigid under my hand.
He looked straight down at me, his face inches from mine in the shadows. Then he leaned in closer to my neck, breathing in the botanical oil at my pulse point a second time.
"Where did you get that oil?" Dominic asked under his breath, the amusement gone from his voice.
"I formulated it myself," I whispered back, frowning at the sudden intensity in his eyes. "Why?"
Three years ago, on a rain-slick highway outside the city, I’d crawled into the crushed wreckage of an overturned luxury sedan and rubbed this exact botanical blend onto a dying stranger’s temples for forty minutes to keep him out of shock until the ambulances arrived. I never saw the man’s face through the blood and pouring rain—and two weeks later, Preston claimed he was the one who had pulled Dominic from that wreck.
Dominic stared down at my wrist, then up into my eyes. Whatever he saw there made his breathing turn shallow.
Everyone in the Sinclair empire knew Dominic hadn’t let another person’s bare skin touch his since the crash that damaged the nerves in his right leg. Even at summer shareholder summits, those black leather gloves never came off.
Yet right here in the dark, Dominic raised his right hand to his mouth, caught the leather tip of the index finger between his teeth, and tugged the glove off.
He shoved the leather into his coat pocket and lifted his bare hand to my face.
His warm, calloused thumb brushed across my bottom lip. The sudden heat of his bare skin made my breath catch against his palm. After two years with a husband who flinched whenever I reached for his hand, the sheer weight of Dominic’s touch set my pulse racing.
Down the gallery, the study door swung wide open.
Light spilled across the hallway runner. Preston stepped out, phone pressed to his ear as he buckled his belt with his free hand.
"Wait—what the hell?" Preston stopped dead beside the marble console table. "Chloe, I’ll call you back."
He hung up. Through the narrow gap beside the pillar, I watched him pick up the porcelain mug of chamomile tea I’d left on the table three minutes ago.
"Still warm," Preston muttered, whipping his head toward the dark gallery. "Sienna? Are you up here?"
Dominic didn’t take his hand off my mouth. Instead, he shifted his weight forward, wedging his hard thigh right between mine and pinning my hips flush against the wall so I couldn't make a sound.
His mouth brushed the skin just below my ear as his bare thumb pressed firmer against my bottom lip.
"Two years of loyalty for a coward who fakes impotence while your best friend steals your crown, little sister-in-law," Dominic whispered against my skin. "Give me thirty days, and I’ll help you bury them both—starting in my bed."
Outside the alcove, Preston’s footsteps crossed the marble floor and stopped right on the other side of our pillar, his hand reaching around the stone edge toward the light switch.
"Kensington?" Richard Hayes stood up from the middle of the mahogany table, adjusting his glasses as he stared at the giant red letters on the wall. "As in Kensington Sovereign Holdings? You are Marcus Kensington’s younger sister?"Beside me at the podium, Preston gaped at the projection screen. "That’s impossible. Sienna Cross is an orphan. She has nobody.""Cross was my mother’s maiden name, Preston," I said into the microphone, lifting the golden master vial out of the silver case. "I stopped using the Kensington name two years ago because my brother warned me you were a parasite who only cared about climbing the corporate ladder. Turns out Marcus was right."I pulled Chloe’s corrupted brown cylinder out of the synthesizer and tossed it into the waste bin. Slotting the master vial into the glass chamber, I typed a nine-digit catalyst sequence onto the keypad and pressed my right thumb to the biometric scanner a second time.Within three seconds, the golden liquid inside the chamber
Inside my trench coat pocket, I tapped my phone screen to save the voice recording of Chloe’s confession before letting go of the device.Preston hurried over to Chloe and pulled her up from the broken glass on the tile floor, stepping in front of her to hide her bleeding hand from the board members."Dominic," Preston said, pasting on a smile. "You’re early. My soon-to-be ex-wife was just throwing a jealous fit because I promoted Chloe to Chief Formulator. Security is already on the way to escort Sienna out of the building."Dominic didn't even look at him. He stopped a few paces away, resting both gloved hands over the handle of his black titanium cane while his dark grey eyes stayed fixed on me."Your domestic messes can wait until ten-thirty," Dominic told Preston. "The Supreme Board is here to verify the five-hundred-million-dollar Elysium compound before we sign off on the global launch contract. Bring those backup cylinders inside, Miss Sutton. Since my brother claims you’re th
The elevator doors slid shut behind me, carrying Dominic up toward the top-floor boardroom.Ten feet down the hallway, Chloe Sutton stood beside a stainless-steel cart outside my private lab. She wore a crisp white lab coat over a tight red silk dress, holding my stolen Elysium backup cylinders against her chest. Right at the hollow of her throat sat the square-cut emerald pendant my mother had left me before she died. When Chloe saw me, she didn't even pretend to look guilty. She glanced up and down the empty corridor to make sure we were alone, then smiled."You’re up early, Sienna," Chloe said, her fingers brushing the emerald at her neck. "Preston told me you threw a fit last night and ran out into the rain like a stray dog."I slipped my right hand into my trench coat pocket, unlocked my phone by touch, and opened the voice recorder app."Take my mother’s necklace off, Chloe," I said, walking over to her. "And put those cylinders back on the rack."Chloe laughed and tossed her cu
My phone buzzed nonstop on the glass nightstand, Preston’s name lighting up the dim room. I ignored it, keeping my eyes on the red security monitor where my older brother glared straight into the elevator camera.Dominic didn't look the least bit worried. Lifting me off his lap, he set me down on the edge of the mattress and stood up.He walked over to the velvet armchair in the corner and picked up my emerald silk dress and trench coat—both dry and freshly pressed."My staff took care of them," Dominic said, tossing the clothes onto the sheets beside me. "Get dressed. Your brother’s about three minutes away from tearing my lobby apart. Take the private service elevator down to the south garage. He’s waiting."I gathered the clothes against my chest, my skin still warm from his touch. "What about the Elysium case?""Safe in my vault," Dominic replied, turning his back to give me privacy as he buttoned a fresh white dress shirt. "Go deal with Marcus and take your name back. I’ll see yo
"Go on, Sienna," Dominic murmured, leaning down until his mouth hovered an inch from mine. "Tell me if my brother knows it’s my name you moan when you come in your sleep."Heat flared across my cheeks. I grabbed the edge of the charcoal silk sheet and yanked it up to my chin to cover the oversized black shirt."Where’s the Elysium case?" I asked, ignoring his question."Locked in my personal vault," Dominic replied. He didn't move back. Under the covers, his bare fingers traced the curve of my knee. "You slept for four straight hours. That’s four hours longer than I’ve tolerated anyone else in this penthouse in three years."He shifted on the edge of the mattress, his grey eyes dropping to my wrist."White neroli and wild valerian," Dominic said, his voice get low. "Preston claimed he dragged me out of that crushed sedan three years ago. But Preston doesn't know the first thing about botanical distillation, and he certainly doesn't have hands small enough to reach through shattered gl
Preston’s fingers brushed the light switch beside our pillar. Before he could flip it, Dominic slid his bare palm from my mouth down to the handle of the silver Elysium case."Let me hold onto your crown until ten tomorrow," Dominic breathed against my ear, slipping the case from my fingers and hiding it beneath his charcoal overcoat.A second later, he stepped out from behind the marble pillar, planting the rubber tip of his black titanium cane right beside Preston’s dress shoe.Preston yelped, stumbling back against the console table and rattling the mug of chamomile tea."Dominic?!" Preston clutched his chest, staring wildly at his older half-brother. "What the hell are you doing lurking upstairs in the dark?"Dominic angled his broad shoulders in front of the alcove gap, blocking me from view."Your housekeeper said you were working late," Dominic replied smoothly, tossing a manila audit folder onto the table. "I came to drop off the quarterly figures, though you sounded... occupi
