Chapter 2

Elijah:

I had to fight back rolling my eyes at the woman as I watched her pace around in front of me.

Her dark brown hair was tied in a bun. Her brown eyes were fixed on the ground as she waited for whatever her boss was going to say. The two of us knew that they wouldn’t be able to do anything, but she was still doing her best to get me ‘behind bars’ and again, she was going to be disappointed.

“You’re making me dizzy” I said catching her attention. She glared at me as I broke whatever train of thoughts she was lost in.

“Good”

“Can I at least have my things? You know, watching you pace around like some idiotic fly can become annoying, might as well use my phone until I leave” I knew that I was testing her patience. She wasn’t what one called ‘social’ when it didn’t come to her job, and frankly, I believed that she hated me too much to want to be around me to begin with.

“You are not going to leave”

“That’s what you said last time” I said putting my ankle over my knee. I waited for her response but it never came as her senior, Jason, arrived with my things, handing them to me. My lawyer, Mikhail, stood by his side, holding his suitcase in his hand as he looked at Anastasia who frowned.

“I’ll take it from here, boss” Mikhail said looking at me, ignoring Anastasia’s presence.

“No” she said shaking her head. She glared at Mikhail as if he’s grown two heads and I had to fight back smirking at her reaction and at the fact that I was right, again.

“We apologize for disturbing you and for the inconvenience caused, Mr. Volkov” Jason said looking me in the eye. I knew that he wanted me caught as much as she did, but they knew not to mess with the ‘law’ when it came to such situations.

She glared at me, watching as one of the other officers walked me toward the door. I winked at her and walked out of the building as she followed her boss looking like she’s been hit by a few bricks. Yaroslav, my best friend and right hand, stood by the door waiting for me.

“Managed to annoy her yet?” He teased.

“You didn’t leave me in long enough to do so. But I’m guessing that her getting an earful from her boss would be enough to do it anyway” I said walking toward the car. Timur, my driver, opened the door for me, and I got inside the car before he walked toward Yaroslav’s side and opened his door.

Timur was about to close the car door for Timur when he froze at the sight of an annoyed Anastasia walking toward the car. He attempted to pull out his gun despite it being risky; however, I opened my door and nodded at him to back away as I handled this with her.

“How the bloody fuck did you manage to do it this time? Bloody hell, you didn’t even have your phone on you! Not to mention the fact that most of the men weren’t even part of your family!” She asked glaring at me. Her eyes caught sight of Yaroslav who got out of the car, and stood in front of the door as he watched her rant “of course, it had to be him”

“Hello to you too, officer”

“I told you to give up, malyshka. Your odd hate and feud with me is only getting old, and you’re just going to end up turning in circles to get nothing. Just settle for your job in catching and solving normal crimes. What I do shouldn’t concern you” I said looking her in the eye “you should be thankful that I like you too much as not to shoot your head, printsessa, anyone else would have been dead long ago”

“You’re breaking the bloody damn law” she said running her fingers through her hair “and miraculously; you seem to constantly be getting away with it”

“Technically, I’m not” I said stopping her “I believe that even your boss is convinced that I’m doing nothing wrong, I think that you should be too. This isn’t some movie or book where you’ll be solving a small case, malyshka. This is the real deal, and the faster you learn that, the better”

“You’re a bloody asshole”

“I’ve heard you say worse. Nevertheless, I hope you’re not suspended again”

“You really are a bloody damn asshole” she muttered under her breath confirming that they either demoted her, put her under punishment, or took away her badge.

“I told you that you’ll end up regretting this, but you decided to choose not to believe me. Anyway, I’ll put in a word or two if you promise that you don’t appear in my face again trying to ‘put me behind bars’ or ‘give me a warning’” I said mimicking her words. I laughed as to mock her before getting back inside the car “go inside, Anastasia. You’re a beautiful woman, and you’re simply draining yourself and your beauty over a job that doesn’t suit you”

“Go to hell”

“I’ll be sure to take you with me” I winked before closing the door “take us home, Timur”

I watched as Blake walked out of the police station to speak to her, and whatever it was; she seemed to become alert, diverting her attention from our car to run back inside by his side.

Yaroslav was quiet as he watched in amusement. He has witnessed both Anastasia and I get into different arguments, some which ended up with her wanting to actually fight me; however, I didn’t hit women, I just settled to pinning her down until she realized that she couldn’t escape my grasp.

“I don’t understand why you won’t put her in place” Yaroslav said pretending that his hand was gun and shooting his head “it would be a lot easier to deal with”

“You and I both know what her issue is” I said reminding him of why the woman wants nothing more than to put me behind bars.

“Had it not been for you; she would have been dead”

“And that is why I should never interfere with what doesn’t concern me…” Yaroslav’s phone rang breaking our conversation.

“What’s going on, Lyov?” Yaroslav said the second he answered “send me the location, we’re on our way”

He hung up and pinched the bridge of his nose “what happened?”

“Alex has been killed”
