DAMON
With a bitter smile on my lips, I decided it would be better to park my car in the open parking lot. Parking in the basement car park would call undue attention to me and the employees I see every day would have more reason to taunt me as they have been doing for whatever reason known to them.
Once the parking was taken care of, I got out of the car and mentally prepared myself for the long day ahead.
I entered the administration building whose outside walls were painted pink and white and headed straight for Linda's office to get my costume and trays of sweets.
Yes, that torturous activity is not over.
As I ignored the snickering and intentional backbiting that trailed me as I walked, I wondered if my bear-dancing situation would come to an end soon.
Mr. Hands did not indicate how long I would do the embarrassing activity for.
At that point, I didn't mind the desk job which I always dreaded because of the people I worked with.
Soon, my mind still raided with thoughts, I entered Linda's office.
"Hey, you. " Linda's voice dragged me out of my many thoughts and I faced one of the people that actually cared about me.
"Hey, Lin. How was your night?"
I walked past the stairs and took a seat.
A wide smile was instantly planted on her lips. It was so wide, it was almost creepy and I feared her lips would have a little tear.
I know... That's an exaggerated thought.
"What's with the extreme smile?"
She clasped her hand, placed her elbows on her desk, rested her chin upon her knuckles, and said, "I might have gotten the best orgasm yesterday night." Linda looked like a happy child as she said those words.
"I see you finally got it done with that man."
"It was so fucking amazing. His lips worked on me last night. The way he sucked on my..."
"Linda!" I sounded like I was close to tears.
"I am saying this and you are going to listen. Because you are a virgin doesn't mean your mind or ears are."
Her point was valid. But I couldn't help but feel weird.
Linda continued her talk.
"When he first worked on my titties, I was like, I am having this dude's dick tonight."
I fake-coughed in response and she ignored me.
"When we kissed, I felt so high. He made me feel so good that I could barely take control."
I rolled my eyes and stylishly looked around for my work suit. I found it behind her seat with about ten trays of sweets in a cart and a money jar to go.
Do I love my job or what?
"He fucked me so good that I even injured myself. See..." She showed me the skin of her right wrist that looked scratched with red patches.
Note to self.
Don't do intercourse that would cause you undue pain.
"Does it hurt?" I asked as I got up to get my work things.
"It doesn't hurt. I hardly felt the pain yesterday. It was that good. Hey, how was the interview?" She suddenly derailed the path of her talk. As Linda stared at me expectantly, I found myself wishing she had just continued babbling about having sex with a stranger.
There was nothing much to say anyway.
"I had my niece's drawings instead of my documents."
Linda's eyes darted towards the ground as she wore pity all over her face. That sympathetic look is one thing I have grown to hate.
"Sheez, that must have been terrible." Awkward silence gradually found its way into the room and Linda began to rub her neck while her eyes kept darting away from my side. I watched her with a blank look on my face while I began to contemplate whether to put on the costume in that room. "So, I am guessing they didn't grant you the interview?" she asked further.
I shook my head.
"I am sure you'll get another interview," Linda said assuredly and I nodded while strongly resisting the temptation to tell her about Miss Selena.
"I should get going now." She hummed in response as I grabbed my stuff and left for my temporary office. I mean, my spot, which is outside and extremely exposed.
When I got outside, I walked towards a small corner to put on the costume. With my sharp sight, I guarded the trays of sweets that were hidden in another corner.
Once I successfully wore the mascot's body, I grabbed the trays and uncomfortably tucked the head under my armpit
Thankfully, the sun wasn't intense yet, so my chances of dying while dancing in a bear suit were minimal.
Soon, I got to work.
My sight was limited so I used the netted eye holes to maneuver my steps, the money jar hanging around my neck like I was a merchant that jumped out of a cartoon.
So, there I was, dancing ridiculously.
Maybe I should have accepted yesterday's offer. Because the more I wave my hands and jerk my knees in the name of advertising some ridiculous product, I find my situation more and more humiliating.
While I bit back the urge to cry, although no one would see my tears, two girls came to my front.
I could barely see their faces as they reached for some sweets but I heard their talk despite the loudness of the speaker that was playing some light, feel-good music.
"This is such a ridiculous costume," one said.
"I know right?" A high-pitched voice that sounded too excited about life responded. "Why would anyone want to be dressed in something like this? It's so hideous. I can never be caught near this ugly thing."
After they dropped their money, the first one said, "I wonder why they chose an ugly costume. Maybe the person inside is as ugly as the mascot."
"I know, right?" The second girl giggled. "An ugly person for an ugly costume."
Their conversation took another turn but their words lingered in my mind.
They didn't make my heart ache, instead, their words annoyed me.
My movements which slowed down because of their words soon picked up and I resumed my dance.
As I admonished myself not to angrily take off the bear's head and smash it in their direction before they could walk further away, a voice said to me, 'There are some things you have to do, humiliating or not, to get to where you want to be.'
That little voice reminded me of the offer I rejected... The juicy offer the Dangerous Dame presented to me. The offer that came with insane bad energy hovering around it.
Quickly, I dismissed the part of me that was about to consider taking Miss Selena's offer.
As I trained my focus on what I was doing at that moment, two men in suits came over to me, took a whole tray of sweets, dropped some money into the jar, and dragged me.
Wait, what?
"What are you guys doing?" I quickly asked the men who played deaf ears while they used their buffy arms to drag me to a black car.
What kind of stupid question was I asking?
They were clearly kidnapping me.
Well, isn't my life wonderful?
I was being kidnapped in broad daylight and no one could do anything about it. Well, they actually can't because things like this happen a lot here.
It is a freaking normal thing.
One can be going about his normal life, then boom! He is being bundled into the trunk of a car.
I felt my jaws clench when I reasoned within me that the woman called Miss Selena was responsible for my kidnap. I didn't get the chance to fight some more because the men settled me inside the car and hurriedly drove off.
"Remove that hideous thing." A deep voice ordered and I felt cool air bless my face as soon as it was removed.
With a deep frown on my face, I darted my sight furiously, stealing a look at every man in the car who all wore angry looks that sort of intimidated me.
"Where are you guys taking me to? Do you work for The Dangerous Dame?" I asked despite the growing fear inside me.
Surprisingly, one of them laughed. It was a short ugly laugh.
"Just shut up!"
"You better shut up if you love your life. Don't be too inquisitive either." Another man that was seated to my right said, his warning voice sending more fright down my bone.
My shoulders slumped, I gulped hard and I began to accept my fate.
Maybe I will become a mafia photographer after all.
DAMON My eyes blinked furiously and with difficulty, I adjusted my sight to accommodate the unusual brightness in the room. I managed to take a quick look around the huge, space that would be empty if I wasn't there, and I noticed a huge gap in the ceiling which gave sunlight a point of entry. That was where the light was from. The heavens must enjoy teasing me. Other than the light that was focused on me, the remnant of the room was dark. I could barely see what lurked in the far corners but I felt a lot of negative energy which came with the musky smell that I was certain I wouldn't be forgetting soon. Soon, I attempted to move my feet so that I could at least scurry for my freedom. Hitting the rusty iron door which was right in front of me didn't sound like a terrible idea. Or I could dump that crazy idea and save myself from getting into trouble by checking out the strange environment through the small bars the huge door had. But, my feet wouldn't budge. As the chair made
DAMON "You have never heard of us?" The middle of his forehead quickly wore a frown before he sharply pulled his hands off the chair and stood upright. My nose scrunched in reaction to his disturbing perfume. After making a clicking noise with his mouth, he folded his arms, gazed right into my eyes, and asked, "How could you have never heard of The Pretties? We made quite an entry this year." "What do you guys do? Put on dresses and try out new lipsticks? Are you a fashion company of some sort?" My voice was so calm and I became worried for myself. Excusing the flamboyant appearance of the man in front of me, it was clear that they were one of the gangs that bothered the streets of the country. But, no, I have never heard about them. The name 'The Pretties' didn't sound familiar. But then, I don't exactly pay much attention to the affairs of the nation. I have enough problems to deal with. My ears caught the stifled chuckles from one of the men at the entrance. Mr. Pretty was
DAMON Miss Selena made clicking noises with her mouth as she tapped the wooden arm of the couch she was seated on. I narrowed my eyes as her response rang in my head a hundred times over. There was something about the word, 'father', that almost made me believe her but, I could not afford to fall into any trap. Especially if that trap is laced with lies. I won't let anyone use my late brother as a means to get me to do something terrible. "What do you mean by my brother was killed because of my father? How do expect me to believe anything you are saying? What?" My frown deepened. "My brother was killed? Please... it was clearly an accident." "The Pretties masterminded his accident. They made sure it was impactful enough to kill him. So yes, they killed him." Selena exhaled hard as I glared at her. As she scrunched her lips while her mind seemed to calculate things, I went to take a seat opposite her. "Prove it. I won't believe you until you do so," I dared her. "Gladly." Her li
DAMON "If you work for me. I will ensure The Pretties doesn't touch your family, otherwise, terrible things will start to happen,” Selena said. "Is this fun for you? Do you think I am a charity case? What do you hope to get from me in return for this protection?" I asked after her words sank in. Honestly, a part of me was already considering her deal. I don't take my family's safety lightly. They are all I have. So, if I have to dine with the devil to have them protected, I will do so. But... I still had so many questions. Selena nodded as my eyes questioned her further. "As you know I have been watching you. What you don't know is that I have been watching you ever since your brother died. I have watched you suffer at that vain job of yours. I have seen how you love your family. I know you are good at what you do. So, I want you to consider my proposition as a simple deal. Take my words as the truth that they are. If I say I will protect you, I will do so. Work for me while us
DAMON I watched as Miss Selena's lips grew into a smile. My response seemed to delight her greatly. "This is awesome," she said excitedly. "We should celebrate." "What's there to celebrate?" I grumbled from where I was. "I am not doing this because I find your offer interesting. No, working with a gang leader has never been my plan. I am doing this to protect my family." "You might as well think that you are doing it for the money," Selena spoke. "You don't have to be so hard on yourself especially now that you have two good-paying jobs." "Isn't my life so great?" I asked, a sarcastic tone in my voice. "Damon Jones," the thickness of her voice snapped me out of my complaining state. "I gave you a choice, so stop making it seem like I forced you to do this. You can decide to change your decision now before we sign a contract." "There's a contract?" My brows lifted accordingly as my nagging side disappeared instantly. "Why?" She crossed her arms. "Did you think you would work for
DAMON "Damon," Selena's feminine voice penetrated my sleep. I was dreaming about my brother and the life he could have had with his daughter and wife. "We're here," I heard her say as I blinked the sleep in my eyes away. While stifling a yawn, I managed a stretch that left me satisfied. I was about to ask Selena a question when the door on her side was immediately shut. She had left the car. I soon did the same. As soon as I stepped out, my sight landed on a huge mansion and the scenery surprised me greatly. Honestly, when she mentioned that we were going to the main base, I imagined a dirty, old-looking, almost rusted factory. But the building I was presently staring at... By God, it was magnificent. At that moment, I felt the ache of not having my camera with me. Everything about the building was glorious. From the well-permed lawn to the exquisitely designed lamp stands which had gold-colured stripes on its pole, everything was indeed gracious. As the car behind me was d
DAMON It all happened so fast. One minute, Selena said something about rules. The next, Camilla was being dragged out of the door by a hefty man who rushed into the room like he had been set ablaze. "Follow me," Selena had ordered sternly and I had no choice but to do so. Even if I wanted to resist, the look in her eyes and the firmness in her voice was enough warning for me. So, as I tried to remain calm, I followed Selena whose sight was trained intently on Camilla. Camila was so close to being dragged on the floor like a dirty rag as the tall, buffy man pulled her along mercilessly. I felt bad for her for a minute but when I recalled how forceful she was earlier, I just hoped that moment wouldn't escalate into a rigorous and bloody one. Soon, after many steps were taken, we were far into the exquisite building and away from the noisy party on the ground floor. My steps soon came to a halt as I watched the man open a door on the right. It was one of the many doors on the lon
DAMON My mother was glad to hear I had gotten a job at TIANOR. Of course, I didn't tell her about the other one, but it gladdened me to see her so happy. As she smiled graciously, prayers wouldn't stop falling from her lips. When I left her house the previous night, I told her I would come later to show her my employee card. Truthfully, I can't wait to see it myself either. For so many nights I dreamt about having one. Ever since my online photography business failed, I decided to cling to my original plan of working for a company. I applied to so many companies and each time I was rejected, I wondered if that was how my life would continue to be. Even when I managed to find a job at the sweet factory, I wondered the same. It bummed me that my life wasn't moving at all. I was just there, living like I was being forced to do so. So, now that I will be getting an employee card, I will stare at it and be more than certain that my life was no longer stagnant. Perhaps for once, life
