I didn’t drive straight to the main house after our conversation. I took a few extra turns, made a stop for coffee I didn’t drink, sat in the car staring at nothing for almost ten minutes.

I wasn’t nervous. That wasn’t the word. I wasn’t scared either. I just didn’t want to lose my temper the moment I walked in and someone said something stupid about Vicky.

Because I knew they would. I knew my mother would. And I needed to remind myself that I was doing this for her, for Vicky and if I blew up too soon, it would only make her life harder. So I stayed calm. At least I tried to.

When I walked into the estate, the scent of cinnamon rolls and vanilla candles hit me like it always did. Bella was already there, curled up on the couch with her phone.

“You’re late,” she said.

“You’re early,” I replied.

Before she could give a snarky comeback, my father stepped out from the hallway, grinning ear to ear like he just won a bet.
