Elena’s POV

“Where are you?” I talk to Riley on the phone as I walk out of the hospital.

“Uh… At work?”

I can picture her rolling her eyes while stuffing potato chips in her mouth. By day, she works as a waitress at the town’s fine dining, and doubles as a receptionist on good days, while the club takes all of her nights except on days she’s off duty.

“I’m coming, right away.”

“Sure. I’ll make a reservation for two.” We laugh and the call ends.

I take a cab to her workplace. The restaurant

ELENAOnce the shock of that negative test finally settled, Julian didn't leave."You're shaking, take it " he said, pulling a massive, heavy gray hoodie out of his backpack."Thank you," I muttered, pulling it over my head. It completely swallowed me, the sleeves hiding my hands.Julian sat on the stool right next to mine, his long legs stretching out against the metal railing. He didn't push for details about how a girl from Ohio ended up drawing highly inappropriate portraits of her father's closest friend."Honestly? I used to think you were just incredibly arrogant," Julian said suddenly, letting out a short laugh.I turned my head to look at him, totally surprised. "Arrogant? Me?""Yeah. In the studio," he said, turning his body to face me."You’d sit at your easel, completely closed off, ignoring every single person who tried to say hello. Maya and I literally thought you looked down on the rest of the class.""I wasn't being arrogant, Julian," I said, looking down at the fabri

  • 365 Days With My Dad’s Bestfriend   154: An Unwanted Truth

ELENAThe silence that followed his words was heavy. He just sat there, waiting for me to break. He wasn't yelling anymore, but the intensity in his eyes was terrifying. He wanted the truth, and I was completely out of lies to tell."Where do I even start?" I whispered, pulling my knees tight against my chest. My fingernails bit into the fabric of my denim jeans, the physical sting keeping me anchored to reality while my chest felt like it was caving in.I took a shaky breath, looking at the floorboards because I couldn't hold his gaze."The apartment... the black card... it all comes from Dominic. Dominic Moretti."Julian’s brow furrowed, his eyes tracking the panic on my face as he tried to place the name."The shipping mogul?" Julian asked, his voice laced with confusion."Elena, he's your father's best friend. I've seen the older news articles about their business connections back in Ohio. Why the hell are you living in his penthouse? Why do you have his money? Did your family fal

ELENAI sat on the edge of the sofa in the middle of the living room. The cheap red wine was entirely gone, leaving nothing behind but a sharp, throbbing ache between my eyes.My mind was completely clear, and that was the absolute worst part. Lately, I found myself reaching for a glass more and more often, just to drown out the silence of this high-rise, but tonight, no amount of alcohol could numb the cold panic tightening in my chest.I looked down at the coffee table. The small cardboard box, sitting right there, contained a pregnancy test.I hadn't touched it since I bought it four hours ago from the pharmacy down the street.I was late. Two weeks late. Every single time my eyes drifted back to that box, my stomach felt like it was filling with lead, and my hands started to shake uncontrollably. What would I even do if it were positive? What was the plan? I didn't have a job. I didn't have a normal life anymore. I was hiding out in a luxury building on 12th Street, living off a g

ELENAThe exhibition gallery on Rivington Street was tiny and packed with students,Julian stayed a step behind me the whole time, a quiet, steady presence in his green jacket. When someone bumped into my shoulder in the narrow aisle, he simply shifted his weight, putting his shoulder between the crowd and me so I had room to breathe."My grandfather took that one," Julian said, nodding toward a small square frame near the back corner."He gave it to me before I left for school," Julian said softly."I should go," I whispered, the air in the gallery suddenly feeling too hot to swallow. Julian didn't question it. He didn't look frustrated or ask why we were leaving after only fifteen minutes."Okay. Let's get out of here. Elena," Julian said, pulling his canvas collar up against the chill."Let me walk you home. It's late, and the trains are running slowly.""No," I said instantly. The word came out too fast, too defensive. I couldn't let him see the 12th Street building."The subway s

ELENAThree weeks passed, and the routine of the modern art school became my only shield.Every morning at seven, I left the luxury penthouse on 12th Street and walked the blocks to the campus. I kept my head down.I didn't ride in Dominic's black sedans, but I swiped his black card every Monday at the campus bookstore to buy fresh charcoal, premium turpentine, and heavy cotton canvases. I didn't care if the notifications hit his phone. It was the price he paid to keep me away from his son.In the studio, I stayed silent. Maya sat at the easel next to mine, her hands always covered in clay or plaster. She was loud, normal, and talked constantly about her roommates or her student loans. I just listened, nodding when necessary, using her chatter to drown out the memory of the penthouse.Julian was always there, too. Over those three weeks, he didn't demand anything from me. He was just a steady presence in a green canvas jacket. He would drop a cup of black coffee on my taboret without

ELENAI sat on the twin bed in my cramped dorm room. The cheap red wine was entirely gone, leaving a dull ache behind my eyes, but my mind was completely clear. Lately, I had been drinking more and more just to drown out the silence of this place.I picked up my phone and stared at the screen. I couldn't call Sophie. Not after the explosive fight in her dorm room, Sophie had told me to get out of her life for good. She had called me a liar, a slut, and accused me of seducing Sebastia…She thought I came to her campus just to steal him. She thought I had looked at his picture on her phone and planned the whole thing, when the truth was I didn't even know he worked at her school until he sat down at that café and put his hands on my face.I set the phone down on the mattress without dialing. The bridge between my sister and me was burned. She had demonized me over a man who didn't even know she existed,Two days later, the school routine started to work as my only distraction.I sat in
