Elena’s POV

“Stay here,” my dad says before we can run after him to meet the doctor. “Don't panic, let me handle it.”

I want to nod and act as if I can just sit around and wait, but the anxiety eating me up shows as tremors.

“Easy—”

“Miss Elena,” the doctor innocently interrupts Riley. He faces me this time and frankly, I’m relieved. I leave the spot my dad has caged us and rush up to the doctor.

“The nurse will take you all to meet her.” He says softly and pats my shoulder.

Much better!

ELENAThe back seat of the yellow taxi cab felt really small. Julian sat right next to me, his long legs bent in an awkward way as he held the massive, six-foot canvas steady against his knees. We had spent the last two hours in the penthouse carefully wrapping the wet oil painting in thick brown paper so the edges wouldn't smudge on our way down to the campus.Every single time the taxi hit a bump on Broadway, my heart did a scary little flip inside my chest."Hey," Julian said softly, breaking the long quiet inside the cab. He let go of the canvas with one of his hands and reached over, sliding his warm fingers right into my cold palm."Stop biting your lower lip like that, Elena. You're going to make it bleed.""I'm just really nervous, Julian," I said, looking out the window at the busy city sidewalk."What if the gallery committee rejects the piece at the front door? What if the art professors think it's just a messy bunch of lines?""They are not going to reject it," Julian said

  • 365 Days With My Dad’s Bestfriend   161: Worshipping Her Body

ELENAThe sound of the elevator doors shutting left a deep quiet in the room. Julian stood by the edge of the bed, his chest still moving fast from the fight with his brother. He looked completely drained, but when he looked up and his green eyes met mine, all that anger went away."Elena,I meant what I told them. I'm not letting anyone take you. You're safe here." he said, his voice dropping into a low, rough whisper. He stepped closer, losing all his hurry. He reached out, his warm hands gently catching the bottom edges of the heavy gray hoodie I was wearing. He paused for a second, looking into my eyes to make sure I was ready. When I nodded, he slowly lifted the thick fabric up and over my head, letting it drop to the floorboards.I stood there in just my jeans and a simple black bra. For a second, the old habit of wanting to cross my arms and hide myself flared up.I was so used to men looking at me like an object or a prize to be won. But Julian didn't look at me like that. His

ELENAI woke up feeling cold. I rolled over in the massive bed, my hand reaching out to find Julian, but his side of the sheets was already empty."Julian?" I called out, my voice loud and shaky in the quiet bedroom. No one answered.I threw off the heavy blankets and walked out into the living room on bare feet. The apartment looked exactly the same as last night, but Julian's backpack was gone from the kitchen island. My heart started beating fast against my ribs. Did he leave? Did he change his mind about everything we talked about at the diner? Then I saw the kitchen counter. A small white notepad was sitting right next to the sink, with Julian’s messy handwriting scribbled across the top sheet. My father’s security team came to my campus apartment early this morning. He knows I used his name against Dominic on the sidewalk. I have to go to his office midtown right now to handle this before he sends his people here. Stay inside. Lock the doors. Don't answer for anyone. I'll call y

ELENAThe walk back from the diner was loud, messy, and totally perfect. Maya was practically skipping ahead of us on the dark sidewalk, holding her giant pink birthday balloon in one hand and eating a leftover donut with the other. Every few steps, she would spin around to look at us, a massive, goofy grin on her face."I knew it!" Maya yelled, pointing a powdered-sugar finger at our joined hands."I knew you two were going to stop playing dumb. Look at you guys, you’re literally glowing. It’s disgusting. I love it so much.""Maya, shut up and watch where you're walking before you trip," Julian laughed, his face turning a little red under the bright streetlights. But he didn't let go of my hand. Instead, he pulled me even closer to his side, his warm fingers squeezing mine tightly inside his big jacket pocket."Nope! I am officially the best matchmaker in the entire art department," she declared, turning back around to march toward our high-rise building."I expect a massive dinner a

  • 365 Days With My Dad’s Bestfriend   158: A Taste Of Normal

ELENAFor the first time in as long as I could remember, the morning didn't start with a panic attack.Instead, it started with Julian loudly banging a metal pot in my kitchen at eight in the morning, singing completely out of tune.I blinked open my eyes, groaning as I pulled the heavy gray hoodie over my face to block out the light. The apartment smelled like burning butter and strong coffee. I rolled off the couch, my limbs stiff from spending the last three days straight hunched over my canvas, and walked into the kitchen."What are you doing?" I asked, my voice thick with sleep.Julian was standing at the stove, wearing a ridiculous neon green apron that he must have bought at the dollar store down the street. He turned around, holding a spatula like a trophy, a massive grin on his face."Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you," he sang at the top of his lungs, completely ignoring how terrible he sounded.I froze, my jaw dropping."How did you know it was my birthday?""I sa

ELENAJulian helped me up from the concrete sidewalk. My legs still felt like jelly, but his grip was tight and strong. He pulled me along quickly until we were safe inside the building lobby. The doorman gave us a long, weird look, but neither of us said a single word until the elevator doors shut us off from the street."We need to get you out of this place," Julian said, watching the floor numbers change as we went up."I can’t just leave, Julian," I muttered, staring at the shiny metal doors."Dominic owns this entire building. His guys are everywhere. If I run, he’ll just find me at the dorms or on campus.""He won't touch you if you're with me," Julian said, turning his head to look at me."I meant what I said out there. He knows who my father is now. He knows it's too risky to mess with me."The elevator dinged, and the doors opened into the penthouse. The apartment was exactly how we had left it. Canvases were stacked against the walls, and expensive paint tubes were scattered
