I think they were frozen at the moment the freezing spell started when they just happened to fly over here 8 years ago.

I tried to take the frozen birds home and cook them in a pot, but the results shocked Carolina and me.

Even in boiling water, the ice did not melt. It seems that the ice will not melt no matter how many 8 years pass unless the destined savior shows up and kisses Carolina's brother Caleb to lift the Freezing Spell.
