Jodie

There are ten days left until the Moon Goddess Festival, and honestly I don’t know if I’m supposed to be excited or terrified. Lila still hasn’t said a word to me in days. I keep trying to nudge her. I tell myself I shouldn’t get worried yet, she’s probably recovering physically, but the worry sits heavy in my chest. Every morning I wake up hoping she’ll say something, only to be disappointed when I call out.

The visiting Alphas, Lunas, and other ranking wolves from farther packs have started arriving earlier than expected, which means everything on the schedule is already shifting around. There’s lodging to finalize, rooms to double-check, guest wings to inspect, and no matter how much I do, there’s always something else added to the list. Alvin and I are supposed to handle this together, except, as usual, Alvin conveniently disappears whenever there’s actual work involved, leaving me to walk through everything alone.

I go ahead to check the lodgings and the newly renovated roo

CaldenI didn't know when my legs moved as Jodie stumbled a bit, catching her in my arms. What's wrong? Why does she keep fainting? She turns slightly, her eyes landing on me, and she frowns, disappointment flashing across her features. She pushes herself away from me, turning sharply and reaching for the door frame for support.“Take your hands off me, Calden…you shouldn't bother to act like it matters to you if I die. It's not like you ever cared.” She spits the words, the snaps hitting me hard. I only tried to help her, and I feel sorry for pushing her earlier. Why is she reacting like that? Right, she's still angry.“Go get some rest, I'll send some medications through Evelyn,” I say, but she shoots me a glare.“I don't need anything else from you other than your signature on the fucking divorce papers before the end of the Moon Festival…because whether you do or not, I'll be leaving.” She finally walks out the door, Kaiser following behind. He hesitates at the door, throwing me

Jodie I least expected Calden to react the way he did, like something inside him snapped the moment he saw Kaiser holding me. He knows Kaiser has always been around me. He knows we have never been anything more than friends. So where is this coming from? Where did he dig up this ridiculous idea that I am doing something shameful behind his back?I turn my head slightly, just enough to look at Kaiser. He has already moved back to the chair he was sitting on earlier, one hand braced on the table, fingers curled tight. His jaw is clenched so hard I can almost hear his teeth grind. He looks pissed, but he is holding himself together, probably more for my sake than his. I hate this.Embarrassment washes over me in a thick, suffocating wave. What the hell is Calden doing? This is the Luna’s office, and Kaiser is a guest, a visiting Alpha. Yet here he is, acting like a feral wolf that has lost all sense.I open my mouth, meaning to grab Calden’s arm, pull him aside, tell him to calm down so

CaldenI have known Jodie for so long and married her for five god damn years, yet… I didn’t see the difference between how she’s treated and how Enid and Alvin are treated, and I didn’t see that she’s not blood-related to the Thornwells. How could I really be so blind? It was pretty obvious.I had pushed past Magnus and rushed out of Enid’s ward after hearing the unbelievable news. Heading to Jodie, I need to hear from her—she never even thought to tell me… her husband? All these years, she didn’t think it was important that I know that much about her. Then again, we never really sat down to talk about anything. Now, I’m starting to wonder if I really know my mate. Erix scoffs mockingly at that.Just then, I twist the doorknob as soon as I get to the door. “Jo—” her name doesn’t make it out completely from my mouth as I open the door to see Jodie’s head buried in Kaiser’s neck, his arms wrapped around her waist, the other hand gently rubbing her head. What is going on here? My hand,

JodieI can tell Calden just zooming off after hearing about Enid’s condition still bothers Kaiser because he is failing to hide the disgust and pity in those eyes staring at me. I look away for a moment, my gaze catching the wine bottles on the shelves, and I suddenly realize I haven’t even offered him a drink.“Wine?” I finally break the silence as I push myself up from the chair and walk toward the shelf in the corner of the office.“Uhm, that’s okay,” he responds softly.I pick one I know he might like. I haven’t touched any of these since my stomach started rejecting everything I try to keep down, even coffee. I grab a glass and pour, the sound filling the room a little too loudly. It feels safer to change the topic and distract him before he says whatever is sitting heavy in his chest. Kaiser is the last person I want looking at me with that pitying gaze. I walk back toward him with the wine, and he reaches out to take the glass.“You don’t have to stay with him, Jodie,” he says

Calden“So the gene surgery didn’t work at all, yet you told me before that it was the most effective.”My fist clenches at the thought of how much of Jodie's blood the surgery had demanded, it drained her so much that I didn't fail to realize how weak she is now.The words leave my mouth before I even realize I’ve spoken them. The doctor standing across from me pauses, fingers tightening around the file in his hand, and that tiny hesitation tells me everything before he even opens his mouth again.“It worked partially,” he says carefully. “But the illness has relapsed. Her body didn’t fully accept the treatment.”I drag a hand down my face, my thumb pressing hard against my jaw. Enid is lying on the bed behind him, still breathing evenly, her chest rising and falling slowly. She looks smaller like this… I can’t tell if what I’m feeling is anger, fear, or exhaustion clawing at me.“How bad,” I finally ask, my hand resting against the wall for support. Alvin is seated beside Enid, his

JodieThat familiar male voice cut through the tense silence, smooth and teasing, carrying that calm confidence that always seemed to make a room notice him. My head snaps toward the doorway, the sound echoing in my ears. It's…My eyes adjust to the figure leaning casually against the frame, arms crossed, a faint smirk playing on his lips. It's Kaiser.“Kaiser?” I mutter under my breath, but loud enough for him and Calden to hear. I didn’t expect he would honor our pack’s invitation to the festival. When last did I see him… he suddenly just stopped communicating with me after my marriage to Calden.“You came?” my mouth falling open before I can stop it.“Of course I did… I’ll be labeled the only Alpha who didn’t attend this year’s Moon Festival, and it’s happening in a pack where you’re Luna.” Kaiser jests in his usual tone, a crooked smile forming on his lips. Dark coils fall across his face, his brown double-breasted suit making him look every bit as commanding as I remember. He wa
