Art's POVNikolai's emotions pour into me freely as I carry him to his room. His emotions are so strong and raw. His fear of losing me was crippling. The devastation he felt when the portal closed is still there as if it just happened. The anguish he felt from thinking he lost the very thing he looked for his whole life nearly brought me to my knees several times as I made my way through the pack house. I've never felt anything so strong. His emotions feel like my own, and my eyes sting. The edges of my reality fray, and it gets harder to tell whose feelings belong to whom.It doesn't matter how tight I hold him, how much he breathes in my scent, or how strong the tingles are against his face and hands; he's having a hard time believing I won't disappear with his next breath. I kicked the door closed behind us, crossed the room to the couch, and sat down. I closed my eyes and took several slow, deep breaths, trying to calm and ground myself. It took way longer than it ever had, but
Art's POV “Calm down, son! It's not what you think. I'm not keeping you here against your will. I closed the portal to ensure privacy,” My father said, and I nearly laughed at his lie. “If that's true, then why is Paxton crying?” “I don't know!” My father said with a bit of frustration, throwing his hands in the air as he shook his head at the fairy. “He's a sensitive little thing! He probably thought he just helped capture you here. I didn't tell him my intentions; he doesn't need to know that! I told him what I wanted him to do, and he did it. Nothing more, nothing less! I'm the king, I don't need to explain myself when I ask something of my people. Their job is to trust me, and do as I say, not ask questions, which Paxton didn't because he knows better.” I growled in frustration as I jerked out of Arthur's grasp, which was already loosening to release me. I glared at Arthur first, hiding my shock at how strong this big brute was. I'm a big Alpha, but Goddess, he was a damn b
Art's POV“Wow! Are all of these your graduating honors?” Nikolai asked.“One sec,” I said, then pulled my lip back between my teeth as I focused on drawing the most ridiculous handlebar mustache on my brother's face. “Art! Your father is going to kill you!” My little Alpha scolded, and I laughed as I put the cap back on, then hid the marker under the planter where it apparently had been for the past 20 years. Either someone hasn't been doing their job properly when cleaning, or they kept this marker here just for me. “Na! Wipes right off the glass unless it sits for a few days. Then you really gotta put some elbow grease into it to get that sucker off! That's what I'm aiming for here,” I said, standing back to admire my work. “Next time, I need to make it a little bigger so I can really go crazy with the curls at the ends.”Nikolai slapped my arm, then pointed to the plaque under my picture. “Oh. Yeah. That's all my graduating honors from school and training.” I said, slipping my
Art’s POVNikolai's eyes rapidly moved, taking in the beauty of the royal castle. The halls seem to go on forever, and the ceilings are ridiculously tall and arched to a peak. On this side of the castle, the ceilings are dark mahogany wood. The halls are lined with tall arched windows from floor to ceiling. The royal flag is almost everywhere you look, along with statues ranging from life-size to miniature ones sitting on pedestals. This is the warriors’ hall, so every statue and picture is of famous royal warriors. To be honored in this hall, you would have had to have done something significant, like led and won a great battle, been significantly wounded to protect a royal member, or have given your life for a royal member. Which is why I wasn't surprised when Nikolai's eyes lit up, and he pointed to Arthur's picture and statue. “Holy shit! Arthur has a statue?” he asked, pulling from my grasp to get a better look. I chuckled at my little mate. His are eyes wide with wonder, spa
Art's POV My body was stiff, every muscle tensed as I sat at the large ballroom table. This isn't where I expected we would sit. I knew we would be in a formal dining room, but I assumed it would be the smaller, more intimate one, not one with a table big enough to seat 50-plus people. It was quickly becoming clear that this wasn't an innocent dinner with my father. He was trying to prove something, but what? Was he trying to make me feel guilty for leaving all those years ago? Did he think seeing everyone I left behind would make me not want to leave again? Was that his plan? They were all here, every person that stood in the throne room when I entered it are now seated at the ridiculously long table. I don't know what my father is trying to accomplish, but whatever it is, he won't! The best he can do is make me feel guilty, but it won't keep me here. Nothing will!My body tenses further the longer I sit here. I fight the urge to let my eyes roam to the right and see exactly who my
Third Person's POVArt began pacing the room when everyone began entering the portal one by one with their mate at their side. The more people that entered, the closer it was to their turn, and the closer it was to their turn, the more Nikolai could feel Art's panic. The smaller Alpha moved forward, stepping in front of his mate and stopping him in his tracks of nervously pacing. Nikolai grabbed his Alpha's face, forcing eye contact.“What's wrong? I thought you agreed to this dinner. Did you not?” Art sighed and dropped his forehead against Nikolai's.“Yes, I agreed to dinner, but that doesn't mean I want to go. It's been a long time since I've set foot in the kingdom, and I swore I'd never return. I agreed only because my father invited your friends and family. I saw the excitement in their eyes at the idea of seeing the kingdom, and I get it. If I've never lived there, I'd want to visit it too. But I have lived there, and…” Art paused, taking a deep breath, then slowly exhaling.
