I might have fallen asleep from all that crying and heartbreak I experienced from my mom's visit earlier on. When I woke up the cell was a bit darker and I assumed that it was either around midnight or early morning. While I was still trying to figure out the date and time, a small figure hurried into my cell, casting a furtive glance over her shoulder. Her scent easily gave her away, it was Eira,  my family's most trusted house helper, her face lined with concern.

“Oh my Bella. Luna Arissa has already left,” Eira whispered, her voice shaking with emotion. “She has not yet spoken to the other Alpha, but he is known to be more merciless than any before him. I overheard him telling our Beta earlier today that tomorrow he will set a good example with you.  That he will restore our lack to order. ”

Eira’s words sent a shudder of fear through my heart. I knew all too well the reputation of this other Alpha, a fearsome warrior whose justice was swift and brutal. I was too stunned to even comment on the matter. Reality was heavily settling in that I was really going to die.

“We must get you out of here Bella,” Eira whispered urgently, her eyes darting nervously around the cell. “I am not even supposed to be here. I managed to drug that other guard temporarily and we don't have a lot of time. I will lead you through the back passages, where the guards hardly patrol. We must hurry Bella.”

I nodded, finally getting a taste of hope. Eira quickly unlocked my cage and gripped my arm tightly, leading me through the shadows of the cell and into a hidden passageway behind a panel in the wall. The tunnel was dark and narrow, the air stale and damp, but I followed Eira’s lead, my heart pounding with fear and anticipation. As we crept through the tunnel, Eira whispered instructions, her voice barely audible over the sound of our footsteps.

“The exit will lead you into the forest. From there, you must make your way to the old cottage on the edge of the pack’s territory. It is hidden but my brother and his mate occasionally used it before he passed away last year, so I believe it still has some foodstuffs to sustain you for a while.”

“The cottage is abandoned,” Eira continued, her words hurried and tense. “There you can get as many foodstuffs and medications as you can carry and run off to your hiding place.  Then, when the night is darkest and the moon’s light is obscured by the clouds, you must continue to flee. There is a human settlement to the south. It's a three-day run from here. You must be careful, Bella. The Alpha will not rest until he has found you. He will send his best hunters, trackers, and scouts. But if you can make it to the human settlement, you may find safety.”

Eira guided me through the tunnel, our steps echoing in the darkness. At last, we emerged from the tunnel’s mouth, the cool night air washing over us like everything was alright with my world.

The forest was quiet, save for the rustling of leaves in the wind. Eira pointed towards the edge of the clearing. “The cottage is over there,” she whispered. “Go now, Bella. Do not hesitate and do not try to stay a moment later there.”

I turned, my gaze meeting Eira’s. “Thank you so much, Eira. I love you so much and I will always be indebted to you.”Eira nodded, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. “You must go, Bella, NOW! And you must not return.” Eira quickly took a scarf and some of her old maid clothes to cover me up as a disguise, so no one would notice it's me. She spread some oil on me to cover up my scent for a while.

My throat tightened,  tears threatening to spill over any minute. “I will not forget your kindness, Eira,” I whispered, emotionally.

Eira turned away, her shoulders sagging with the weight of her secret. “Go, Bella. And may the goddess watch over you.”

I turned and fled into the forest, my heart racing and my mind fighting to keep all what-ifs at bay. The darkness pressed in around me, the shadows surprisingly being a welcome aspect. But I pressed onward, my legs moving on instinct, guided by the faint light of the moon. I ran for what felt like an eternity, until at last I saw the outline of the cottage through the trees.

I stumbled towards it, exhaustion and fear dragging at my limbs. As I neared the cottage, a chilling howl rose through the night just behind me. The howl sent a shiver of fear down my spine. I knew that my life was now over. “Who are you and where do you think you are going this late? Turn around and look at me.” One of the two guards who had emerged from nowhere growled at me.

  • A Blessing in Disguise   Nice To Meet You Bella

After a quick bath, I stood before the antique mirror in the guest room, smoothing out my clothes. Unfortunately, Eira didn't pack any dresses for me, only two pieces each of black tights, pants, t-shirts, undies and a sweater. But I totally understand her, there was no room for all those corset dresses and all the heads turning little numbers. I just hope this family is not too strict when it comes to dinner dressing, as I'm about to rock out with pants and a sweater. And just to avoid curiosity and any questioning I decided to keep a beanie on to hide my hair which seemed to be getting more snowy with each passing day, sometimes it seemed to be even glowing. The room itself looked Royale, with simple but elegant patterns on the wallpaper and a plush, velvet-covered armchair in one corner. I felt a little out of place especially remembering the grand dinner table I found earlier and all the antiques, but at least Annie had told me to feel at home.I took a deep breath, quickly runn

  • A Blessing in Disguise   The Mansion

After clearing the counters and making sure that everything was on point, Annie finally locked up the bakery while Brian and Luu waited with us. I could tell by Brian's body language that he was still angry and had no intention of hiding it. Anyway, Annie led me towards the one-way street leading north of the bakery. As we walked in the hazy darkness, my mind raced with questions. Why were we going so far from the bakery? “Didn't she say she lived upstairs?”I wondered inwardly, but I didn't want to bother her yet, so I just followed them. Though there were a few street lights, it was clearly not enough as we walked in a dim path. On a normal day, I could have channelled my abilities and used the eyesight of my wolf to see clearer in the darkness. But I couldn't risk it, not when I wasn't even sure how long my freedom would last. I planned to keep Elsie hiding for as long as I could. For now, I'll make it a point to learn the art of being a normal human. After walking about 5 miles

The woman’s expression softened, a hint of sympathy in her eyes. “I’m Annie,” she said, extending a hand towards me. “It’s nice to meet you, Annie,” I said, shaking her hand. “I promise I won’t disappoint you if you give me a chance. And not to brag, I'm a hard worker, I can keep up with work long hours, without messing anything up.”Annie rolled her eyes and said, “Don't they all say that when scamming us?” We both laughed and Annie’s expression was thoughtful again. “We’ll see about that. But for now, I suppose we could use an extra pair of hands.” She motioned towards the table, where a stack of pans waited to be cleaned. “Why don’t you start by cleaning those? Then we'll talk properly later and I'll get to show you around.”I nodded quickly and rushed towards the pans, I couldn't believe my luck and for the first time in a long time, a flicker of hope started rising in my chest. I silently vowed to myself that I wouldn't mess this up anyhow. As the hours passed, I worked tireles

  • A Blessing in Disguise   The Bakery

After running for what seemed like an eternity, I eventually saw the outskirts of the human settlement, Eira had told me about. I wanted to crash in the woods for some time, just to scan and observe from a safe distance but at the same time, I understood that the pack and possibly the recent rival wolf were thoroughly searching for me and might soon catch up. So I had no choice but to try and blend in with everyone. And possibly find a job to sustain me ASAP. I was so engrossed in my thoughts that I didn't even notice that it was already nighttime. Some things are normal in wolf packs but in human settlements, it might be totally the opposite and I wasn't about to land in another guard's custody on my first day here. So I moved swiftly and silently through the outskirts, my feet barely touching the ground. My eyes darted from shadow to shadow, looking for a place to hide until dawn, when the townspeople would wake up and hopefully provide me with the cover I desperately needed.Luck

  • A Blessing in Disguise   Meeting Death

Chapter 7The moonlight filtered through the thick canopy of trees, though this helped me find my path clearly, it didn't help that I'll be in the spotlight, so some rogue or beast may prey on me. Nonetheless, I continued running, with 3ach step, my paws pounded against the dirt, carrying me deeper into the wilderness. The wind whipped through my fur, carrying with it the scents of the forest—damp earth, sharp pine, and the distant scent of the pack, growing fainter with each passing moment. Thanks to the hunting lessons I used to take with my Dad, I now knew where to stray off to avoid straddling the borders of our rival packs who were very strict towards rogues and trespassers. After a while, I even stopped worrying about time and the possibilities of running into other rogues or beasts., I pressed onward, my muscles burning with fatigue, but I pushed through the pain, my heart set on one thing, finding a human settlement to hide in. As the first rays of dawn started showing, I

  • A Blessing in Disguise   Who Are You?

I froze in my tracks, my breath catching in my throat. This can't be happening. The guards slowly walked towards me, their faces stern and unyielding. They stopped a few inches away, commanding me to face them slowly. I cautiously turned to face them, still keeping my head down, my heart pounding rapidly. “I'm sorry for startling you guys,” I stammered, trying to hide the fear in my voice. The guards exchanged a knowing glance, their eyes gleaming in the moonlight. “Who are you?” the first guard growled. “You don’t smell like you belong here.I'm Sylvie, Rufus's widow. It's one of those times that I miss him terribly. I know I should have waited for the morning. But I thought I could just sneak to our cottage to get to be nearer to him. But I can go back if it's not allowed.”“Sylvie?” The guards exchanged a confused glance, clearly uncertain of how to respond.“Yes,” I said, trying to sound confident. “I’m Sylvie, Rufus’s wife.” I took another step forward, trying to boost my confid
