The music pulsed through the crowded ballroom, but all I could focus on was Marcus. My mate. The one person fated to be mine forever. We swayed to the rhythm, our bodies so close, I could feel our hearts beating as one. What a night!

Marcus's warm breath tickled my ear as he whispered, "You're a 10/10 Bella, super fine. You know, I'm the luckiest wolf alive." I blushed, my cheeks warming up. I couldn't believe this handsome guy was mine either. And he was so sweet OMG!

We laughed and danced, lost in our own little world. But as the night wore on, I felt my phone buzzing in my pocket. I hesitated, not wanting to break the passionate spell we had. Marcus noticed my distraction and raised an eyebrow. "Everything okay?"

I pulled out my phone, and my heart leapt when I saw my dad's message: "Meet me at the lakeside. Now." I felt a shiver run down my spine. Where has he been the whole day, also what surprise does he have by the lake tonight? I rolled my eyes at his text.

"Sorry, Marcus, I need to go," I said, trying to sound casual. "My dad wants to see me."

Marcus's face fell, but he nodded understandingly. "Okay, I'll walk you out."

I hesitated, not wanting to drag him into whatever drama my dad had brewing. "No, it's okay, I'll just... um... meet him real quick and dash back to you."

Marcus looked concerned, but I reassured him with a quick kiss. "I'll be right back, I promise."

As soon as Marcus turned back to the dance floor, I slipped away, my heart racing with anticipation. I couldn't wait to whine to my dad about how worried he'd made me feel. I snuck out of the ballroom, the cool night air a welcome relief after the crowded dance floor.

I made my way to the lakeside, my senses on high alert. What did my dad want? And why did he need to see me at the lake now, of all times? I quickened my pace, my mind racing with possibilities.

I hurried through the darkness, grateful for the moonlight. The lake's calm surface reflected the stars above, creating a sense of peace that belied my racing thoughts. What surprise did Dad have this time around, that made him miss my ball tonight? I sulked and quickened my pace again.

As I approached the lakeside, I saw Dad lying by the water's edge, his back to me. I rushed to him, my annoyance growing. "Dad, what's going on? Where have you been? And is this so important that you have to miss my special night?" I asked, trying to keep my voice low.

He slowly turned his head to face me, and I almost fell with shock. For a moment I couldn't even utter a single word as I tearfully crawled back to him.

“D-a-d, are you okay, what's going on?”

I started touching him all over trying to see if I could hoist him up and lead him back to the house.

He struggled to breathe as he tightly held my hands. “Bella, I'm glad you're here. We need to talk."

A wave of panic washed over me. “What happened, who did this to you?” I cried. “You have to be okay!”

But Alpha Derek shook his head slowly, fighting to keep his eyes open. “I’m sorry you had to see this, my princess. There’s something you need to know.” he paused coughing up blood in the process.

As I knelt beside my father’s body, tears streaming down my face, Alpha Derek reached out and grabbed my arm tightly though he was shaking, his eyes blazing with a fierce intensity.

“Bella, listen to me,” he whispered urgently. “You must run. Now. Get as far away from here as possible. Do not return. Do not look back. He's here and coming for you, don't trust anyone.”

I shook my head repeatedly, confusion and terror rushing within me. “What do you mean. But I can't even leave you like this,” I cried.

Alpha Derek’s grip tightened around me, his voice hoarse but determined. “You must, Bella. I won’t let you die here with me. Promise me you’ll run and never look back. Go now, Bella, you must.”

My vision blurred with tears, but I quickly nodded, my voice breaking as I spoke. “I promise, Daddy.”

He gasped again trying to say something to me but with that, Alpha Derek let out a shuddering breath and went still, his body falling back against the dirt. I panicked and shook him for a while, but remembering his command I pulled myself together.

I scrambled to my feet and began to run without any direction in mind, but I knew that I had to go away. Run without stopping, far away from the pack and hide my identity. At least that's what I thought the command meant. My legs felt numb, but I pushed on, my heart pounding in my chest with a mixture of fear and pain of losing my favourite person.

Meanwhile, some of the pack members arrived at the scene of the crime by the lake and they were immediately shocked by the scent of death and betrayal. The stench of blood hung heavy in the air, and the gruesome sight of Alpha Derek’s lifeless body sent a ripple of horror through the pack.

They began to investigate the area, noses close to the ground, following the trail of footprints. To their shock, the scent was unmistakable: Bella. The Alpha’s own daughter. They looked around in confusion, unable to understand how this could be possible.

In a desperate attempt to find Bella, the pack members spread

Out, their howls of mourning echoing through the forest. It wasn’t long before they caught a fresh whiff of my scent, and they followed it with single-minded determination.

When they came upon me, I was sprinting through the woods, tears streaking down my face. They tried to call me but surprisingly I kept on running even faster. They didn’t hesitate, quickly cornering and surrounding me, their eyes glinting with anger.

“Bella,” the Beta growled, his voice low and dangerous

After a quick bath, I stood before the antique mirror in the guest room, smoothing out my clothes. Unfortunately, Eira didn't pack any dresses for me, only two pieces each of black tights, pants, t-shirts, undies and a sweater. But I totally understand her, there was no room for all those corset dresses and all the heads turning little numbers. I just hope this family is not too strict when it comes to dinner dressing, as I'm about to rock out with pants and a sweater. And just to avoid curiosity and any questioning I decided to keep a beanie on to hide my hair which seemed to be getting more snowy with each passing day, sometimes it seemed to be even glowing. The room itself looked Royale, with simple but elegant patterns on the wallpaper and a plush, velvet-covered armchair in one corner. I felt a little out of place especially remembering the grand dinner table I found earlier and all the antiques, but at least Annie had told me to feel at home.I took a deep breath, quickly runn

After clearing the counters and making sure that everything was on point, Annie finally locked up the bakery while Brian and Luu waited with us. I could tell by Brian's body language that he was still angry and had no intention of hiding it. Anyway, Annie led me towards the one-way street leading north of the bakery. As we walked in the hazy darkness, my mind raced with questions. Why were we going so far from the bakery? “Didn't she say she lived upstairs?”I wondered inwardly, but I didn't want to bother her yet, so I just followed them. Though there were a few street lights, it was clearly not enough as we walked in a dim path. On a normal day, I could have channelled my abilities and used the eyesight of my wolf to see clearer in the darkness. But I couldn't risk it, not when I wasn't even sure how long my freedom would last. I planned to keep Elsie hiding for as long as I could. For now, I'll make it a point to learn the art of being a normal human. After walking about 5 miles

The woman’s expression softened, a hint of sympathy in her eyes. “I’m Annie,” she said, extending a hand towards me. “It’s nice to meet you, Annie,” I said, shaking her hand. “I promise I won’t disappoint you if you give me a chance. And not to brag, I'm a hard worker, I can keep up with work long hours, without messing anything up.”Annie rolled her eyes and said, “Don't they all say that when scamming us?” We both laughed and Annie’s expression was thoughtful again. “We’ll see about that. But for now, I suppose we could use an extra pair of hands.” She motioned towards the table, where a stack of pans waited to be cleaned. “Why don’t you start by cleaning those? Then we'll talk properly later and I'll get to show you around.”I nodded quickly and rushed towards the pans, I couldn't believe my luck and for the first time in a long time, a flicker of hope started rising in my chest. I silently vowed to myself that I wouldn't mess this up anyhow. As the hours passed, I worked tireles

After running for what seemed like an eternity, I eventually saw the outskirts of the human settlement, Eira had told me about. I wanted to crash in the woods for some time, just to scan and observe from a safe distance but at the same time, I understood that the pack and possibly the recent rival wolf were thoroughly searching for me and might soon catch up. So I had no choice but to try and blend in with everyone. And possibly find a job to sustain me ASAP. I was so engrossed in my thoughts that I didn't even notice that it was already nighttime. Some things are normal in wolf packs but in human settlements, it might be totally the opposite and I wasn't about to land in another guard's custody on my first day here. So I moved swiftly and silently through the outskirts, my feet barely touching the ground. My eyes darted from shadow to shadow, looking for a place to hide until dawn, when the townspeople would wake up and hopefully provide me with the cover I desperately needed.Luck

  • A Blessing in Disguise   Meeting Death

Chapter 7The moonlight filtered through the thick canopy of trees, though this helped me find my path clearly, it didn't help that I'll be in the spotlight, so some rogue or beast may prey on me. Nonetheless, I continued running, with 3ach step, my paws pounded against the dirt, carrying me deeper into the wilderness. The wind whipped through my fur, carrying with it the scents of the forest—damp earth, sharp pine, and the distant scent of the pack, growing fainter with each passing moment. Thanks to the hunting lessons I used to take with my Dad, I now knew where to stray off to avoid straddling the borders of our rival packs who were very strict towards rogues and trespassers. After a while, I even stopped worrying about time and the possibilities of running into other rogues or beasts., I pressed onward, my muscles burning with fatigue, but I pushed through the pain, my heart set on one thing, finding a human settlement to hide in. As the first rays of dawn started showing, I

  • A Blessing in Disguise   Who Are You?

I froze in my tracks, my breath catching in my throat. This can't be happening. The guards slowly walked towards me, their faces stern and unyielding. They stopped a few inches away, commanding me to face them slowly. I cautiously turned to face them, still keeping my head down, my heart pounding rapidly. “I'm sorry for startling you guys,” I stammered, trying to hide the fear in my voice. The guards exchanged a knowing glance, their eyes gleaming in the moonlight. “Who are you?” the first guard growled. “You don’t smell like you belong here.I'm Sylvie, Rufus's widow. It's one of those times that I miss him terribly. I know I should have waited for the morning. But I thought I could just sneak to our cottage to get to be nearer to him. But I can go back if it's not allowed.”“Sylvie?” The guards exchanged a confused glance, clearly uncertain of how to respond.“Yes,” I said, trying to sound confident. “I’m Sylvie, Rufus’s wife.” I took another step forward, trying to boost my confid
