Chapter 7

The moonlight filtered through the thick canopy of trees, though this helped me find my path clearly, it didn't help that I'll be in the spotlight, so some rogue or beast may prey on me. Nonetheless, I continued running, with 3ach  step, my paws pounded against the dirt, carrying me deeper into the wilderness. The wind whipped through my fur, carrying with it the scents of the forest—damp earth, sharp pine, and the distant scent of the pack, growing fainter with each passing moment.

Thanks to the hunting lessons I used to take with my Dad, I now knew where to stray off to avoid straddling the borders of our rival packs who were very strict towards rogues and trespassers.

After a while, I even stopped worrying about time and the possibilities of running into other rogues or beasts.,  I pressed onward, my muscles burning with fatigue, but I pushed through the pain, my heart set on one thing, finding a human settlement to hide in.

As the first rays of dawn started showing, I could spot a stream of water a few miles away. I slowed to a walk, my sides heaving with fatigue. As the forest began to be clear, thanks to the sunshine, I came to 5he river that ran parallel to the border of the rogue pack’s territory.

I approached the river cautiously, my paws sinking into the soft mud of the riverbank.  The water sparkled in the morning light, tempting me to drink and rid myself of my thirst. After a careful look around for scents of other animals, I relaxed a bit and decided to take a few gulps from the river to avoid depleting my own small supply in the backpack I carried.

Though I initially planned to take a quick gulp and run off, I ended up drinking more than that. The water was truly refreshing in every sense. But that enjoyment was cut short as I quickly sensed another presence around me.

I quickly lifted my head, my ears perked in alertness. Then, from the trees, a large figure stepped out into the open. It was another wolf, lean and powerful, its fur a deep, midnight black.

We stared at each other for a moment, our gazes locked in an unspoken challenge.

The black wolf’s lips curled back in a snarl, revealing sharp, glistening teeth. It took a slow, cautious step forward, its muscles tensed in readiness.

My whole body was aching from all that running and the pains I was running from. I wasn't about to show my weaknesses to a damn rogue wolf or whatever this beast was. So I raised my own hackles, my fighting instincts taking over. This wolf was a rival, a threat to my safety and I wasn't about to risk being seen as prey.

I growled low in my throat, exposing my own fangs. The air between us crackled with tension, each of us waiting for the other to make the first move.

Suddenly, without warning, the black wolf lunged, its powerful legs propelling it forward with the speed of a hunting arrow.

I reacted quickly, all thanks to the lifelong fighting skills my Dad gave me. So I sidestepped its attack with a quick twist of my body. I felt the rush of stinking air as its teeth snapped closed, narrowly missing my flank. Damn, doesn't he know anything about oral cleanliness?

I spun, lashing out with my claws, aiming for the vulnerable flesh beneath the black wolf’s throat. But it was fast, and my claws only scratched it a bit.

That seemed to anger the rival wolf even more, it snarled, its anger quite

Visible. I could tell that this wasn't just a random rogue, it was a well-experienced fighter as well.

I jumped to the left, then darted to the right, trying to catch the black wolf off guard. But it proved to be skilled in battle, and I could see the hint of cunning in its eyes.

As I dodged another lunge, I caught sight of something glinting in the grass just behind the rival wolf—the dagger I had taken from the cottage.

Desperate for an edge, I darted towards the dagger, my paws churning up mud as I quickly snatched it from the ground.

I whirled back towards the black wolf, wielding the dagger like a claw. It was clearly surprised by my weapon, its eyes widening as it circled, keeping its distance.

I bared my teeth, glaring at him. “Who are you?” I growled, keeping the dagger at the ready.

The black wolf snarled, the fur along its spine bristling. “You think a blade will save you, pup?” it snapped, its voice a low, menacing rumble. “You have no idea who you’re dealing with. I'm not afraid of weak rogues.”

I tightened my grip on the dagger, narrowing my eyes. “I don’t care who you are,” I retorted, my voice cold and determined. “I’m not your prey. If you don't mind I'd like to continue on my journey.”

The black wolf hissed, its lips curling back in a feral grin.

“You think so, pup?” the black wolf growled. “You’re my prey now.”

With that, the wolf sprang at me, ready to tear me apart. I sidestepped the attack, swinging the dagger with all the strength I could get. The blade flew through the air, slicing a shallow wound across the black wolf’s shoulder.

The wolf yelped, its momentum carrying it past me.

The black wolf skidded to a halt, its eyes narrowed with rage. Blood dripped from its shoulder, staining the grass beneath it.

“Cunning,” it sneered, circling me once more. “But not clever enough. You'll get to feel my wrath now.”

I shifted my weight, circling in the opposite direction. The grass crunched underfoot, each step a challenge, a promise of battle. I only gave him a half smile.

“Why don’t you tell me your name, before I carve it into your hide?” I growled, gripping the dagger tighter.

“My name?” the black wolf chuckled, its tail twitching in amusement. “My name is Death, and you’re a fool to challenge me.”

I lifted the dagger, studying the wolf. “Death or rather suicide? You seem like a weakling to me.” I scoffed.

The dark wolf growled, his eyes flashing with anger. “You don’t know anything, pup.”

Perhaps not,” I shot back, my hackles rising. “But I know that you’re the one bleeding.”

The wolf snarled, launching another attack. This time, he was quicker, his teeth snapping just inches from my throat.

I darted backwards, swiping at him with the dagger. He dodged the blow, but not quickly enough. I moved quickly and aimed at his stomach. What this wolf didn't know was that the dagger was previously coated with wolfsbane. And that was all I needed to escape from another cruel prison. I didn't even wait to check if the rival wolf was dead or just badly hurt. I took off in another run, determined not to run into another wolf that might keep me from reaching my destination.

  • A Blessing in Disguise   How's Work So Far

I padded down the stairs, my feet bare on the cool wood while holding my sneakers, the scent of freshly brewed coffee and warm bread wafting up to greet me. The clock on the wall read 5:00 AM, and I had just enough time to grab a quick breakfast before heading to the bakery. I had been working at the bakery for a day now, and I loved this early morning shift. The smell of freshly baked bread and the quiet morning atmosphere were now my favourite things. As I entered the kitchen, I was greeted by the warm smiles of the housekeeper and James. Mike was sitting at the table, his eyes fixed on his laptop, his face bathed in the pale blue light of the screen."Good morning, Bella," the housekeeper said, getting up to pour me a cup of coffee. Her voice was warm and welcoming, and I was grateful for her."Good morning," I replied, taking a seat next to James. I smiled faintly at him, and he smiled back. With this family, it was still hard to tell who was friendlier. They all seemed to have i

  • A Blessing in Disguise   I Can't Sleep

The clock on the wall read 2:47 AM, and the silence of the night was oppressive, like a thick blanket smothering the life out of me. I tossed and turned, my mind racing with thoughts of the new job, the new town, and the new family I was living with. I missed my old life terribly. I had only arrived a day ago, and everything was still overwhelming. And I couldn't sleep peacefully without dreaming of my chasers or my father's death. With a sigh, I threw off the covers and swung my legs over the side of the bed, letting the cool air hit my skin. The room was stifling, the air thick with the scent of old books and stale air. Don't get me wrong, I love the scent of books and stuff, but not now. I have a lot on my mind I just need peace. I stood up, my eyes adjusting to the darkness, and padded over to the window. Fortunately, the moon was full outside.I felt a bit of nostalgia as I gazed out at the peaceful scene. I had always loved gardens, and this one was no exception. The family, th

  • A Blessing in Disguise   Nice To Meet You Bella

After a quick bath, I stood before the antique mirror in the guest room, smoothing out my clothes. Unfortunately, Eira didn't pack any dresses for me, only two pieces each of black tights, pants, t-shirts, undies and a sweater. But I totally understand her, there was no room for all those corset dresses and all the heads turning little numbers. I just hope this family is not too strict when it comes to dinner dressing, as I'm about to rock out with pants and a sweater. And just to avoid curiosity and any questioning I decided to keep a beanie on to hide my hair which seemed to be getting more snowy with each passing day, sometimes it seemed to be even glowing. The room itself looked Royale, with simple but elegant patterns on the wallpaper and a plush, velvet-covered armchair in one corner. I felt a little out of place especially remembering the grand dinner table I found earlier and all the antiques, but at least Annie had told me to feel at home.I took a deep breath, quickly runn

  • A Blessing in Disguise   The Mansion

After clearing the counters and making sure that everything was on point, Annie finally locked up the bakery while Brian and Luu waited with us. I could tell by Brian's body language that he was still angry and had no intention of hiding it. Anyway, Annie led me towards the one-way street leading north of the bakery. As we walked in the hazy darkness, my mind raced with questions. Why were we going so far from the bakery? “Didn't she say she lived upstairs?”I wondered inwardly, but I didn't want to bother her yet, so I just followed them. Though there were a few street lights, it was clearly not enough as we walked in a dim path. On a normal day, I could have channelled my abilities and used the eyesight of my wolf to see clearer in the darkness. But I couldn't risk it, not when I wasn't even sure how long my freedom would last. I planned to keep Elsie hiding for as long as I could. For now, I'll make it a point to learn the art of being a normal human. After walking about 5 miles

The woman’s expression softened, a hint of sympathy in her eyes. “I’m Annie,” she said, extending a hand towards me. “It’s nice to meet you, Annie,” I said, shaking her hand. “I promise I won’t disappoint you if you give me a chance. And not to brag, I'm a hard worker, I can keep up with work long hours, without messing anything up.”Annie rolled her eyes and said, “Don't they all say that when scamming us?” We both laughed and Annie’s expression was thoughtful again. “We’ll see about that. But for now, I suppose we could use an extra pair of hands.” She motioned towards the table, where a stack of pans waited to be cleaned. “Why don’t you start by cleaning those? Then we'll talk properly later and I'll get to show you around.”I nodded quickly and rushed towards the pans, I couldn't believe my luck and for the first time in a long time, a flicker of hope started rising in my chest. I silently vowed to myself that I wouldn't mess this up anyhow. As the hours passed, I worked tireles

  • A Blessing in Disguise   The Bakery

After running for what seemed like an eternity, I eventually saw the outskirts of the human settlement, Eira had told me about. I wanted to crash in the woods for some time, just to scan and observe from a safe distance but at the same time, I understood that the pack and possibly the recent rival wolf were thoroughly searching for me and might soon catch up. So I had no choice but to try and blend in with everyone. And possibly find a job to sustain me ASAP. I was so engrossed in my thoughts that I didn't even notice that it was already nighttime. Some things are normal in wolf packs but in human settlements, it might be totally the opposite and I wasn't about to land in another guard's custody on my first day here. So I moved swiftly and silently through the outskirts, my feet barely touching the ground. My eyes darted from shadow to shadow, looking for a place to hide until dawn, when the townspeople would wake up and hopefully provide me with the cover I desperately needed.Luck
