The woman’s expression softened, a hint of sympathy in her eyes. “I’m Annie,” she said, extending a hand towards me.

“It’s nice to meet you, Annie,” I said, shaking her hand. “I promise I won’t disappoint you if you give me a chance. And not to brag, I'm a hard worker, I can keep up with work long hours, without messing anything up.”

Annie rolled her eyes and said, “Don't they all say that when scamming us?” We both laughed and Annie’s expression was thoughtful again. “We’ll see about that. But for now, I suppose we could use an extra pair of hands.” She motioned towards the table, where a stack of pans waited to be cleaned. “Why don’t you start by cleaning those? Then we'll talk properly later and I'll get to show you around.”

I nodded quickly and rushed towards the pans, I couldn't believe my luck and for the first time in a long time, a flicker of hope started rising in my chest. I silently vowed to myself that I wouldn't mess this up anyhow.

  • A Blessing in Disguise   Nice To Meet You Bella

After a quick bath, I stood before the antique mirror in the guest room, smoothing out my clothes. Unfortunately, Eira didn't pack any dresses for me, only two pieces each of black tights, pants, t-shirts, undies and a sweater. But I totally understand her, there was no room for all those corset dresses and all the heads turning little numbers. I just hope this family is not too strict when it comes to dinner dressing, as I'm about to rock out with pants and a sweater. And just to avoid curiosity and any questioning I decided to keep a beanie on to hide my hair which seemed to be getting more snowy with each passing day, sometimes it seemed to be even glowing. The room itself looked Royale, with simple but elegant patterns on the wallpaper and a plush, velvet-covered armchair in one corner. I felt a little out of place especially remembering the grand dinner table I found earlier and all the antiques, but at least Annie had told me to feel at home.I took a deep breath, quickly runn

After clearing the counters and making sure that everything was on point, Annie finally locked up the bakery while Brian and Luu waited with us. I could tell by Brian's body language that he was still angry and had no intention of hiding it. Anyway, Annie led me towards the one-way street leading north of the bakery. As we walked in the hazy darkness, my mind raced with questions. Why were we going so far from the bakery? “Didn't she say she lived upstairs?”I wondered inwardly, but I didn't want to bother her yet, so I just followed them. Though there were a few street lights, it was clearly not enough as we walked in a dim path. On a normal day, I could have channelled my abilities and used the eyesight of my wolf to see clearer in the darkness. But I couldn't risk it, not when I wasn't even sure how long my freedom would last. I planned to keep Elsie hiding for as long as I could. For now, I'll make it a point to learn the art of being a normal human. After walking about 5 miles

After running for what seemed like an eternity, I eventually saw the outskirts of the human settlement, Eira had told me about. I wanted to crash in the woods for some time, just to scan and observe from a safe distance but at the same time, I understood that the pack and possibly the recent rival wolf were thoroughly searching for me and might soon catch up. So I had no choice but to try and blend in with everyone. And possibly find a job to sustain me ASAP. I was so engrossed in my thoughts that I didn't even notice that it was already nighttime. Some things are normal in wolf packs but in human settlements, it might be totally the opposite and I wasn't about to land in another guard's custody on my first day here. So I moved swiftly and silently through the outskirts, my feet barely touching the ground. My eyes darted from shadow to shadow, looking for a place to hide until dawn, when the townspeople would wake up and hopefully provide me with the cover I desperately needed.Luck

  • A Blessing in Disguise   Meeting Death

Chapter 7The moonlight filtered through the thick canopy of trees, though this helped me find my path clearly, it didn't help that I'll be in the spotlight, so some rogue or beast may prey on me. Nonetheless, I continued running, with 3ach step, my paws pounded against the dirt, carrying me deeper into the wilderness. The wind whipped through my fur, carrying with it the scents of the forest—damp earth, sharp pine, and the distant scent of the pack, growing fainter with each passing moment. Thanks to the hunting lessons I used to take with my Dad, I now knew where to stray off to avoid straddling the borders of our rival packs who were very strict towards rogues and trespassers. After a while, I even stopped worrying about time and the possibilities of running into other rogues or beasts., I pressed onward, my muscles burning with fatigue, but I pushed through the pain, my heart set on one thing, finding a human settlement to hide in. As the first rays of dawn started showing, I

  • A Blessing in Disguise   Who Are You?

I froze in my tracks, my breath catching in my throat. This can't be happening. The guards slowly walked towards me, their faces stern and unyielding. They stopped a few inches away, commanding me to face them slowly. I cautiously turned to face them, still keeping my head down, my heart pounding rapidly. “I'm sorry for startling you guys,” I stammered, trying to hide the fear in my voice. The guards exchanged a knowing glance, their eyes gleaming in the moonlight. “Who are you?” the first guard growled. “You don’t smell like you belong here.I'm Sylvie, Rufus's widow. It's one of those times that I miss him terribly. I know I should have waited for the morning. But I thought I could just sneak to our cottage to get to be nearer to him. But I can go back if it's not allowed.”“Sylvie?” The guards exchanged a confused glance, clearly uncertain of how to respond.“Yes,” I said, trying to sound confident. “I’m Sylvie, Rufus’s wife.” I took another step forward, trying to boost my confid
