Chapter 2

Author: Sylvia Brook
Holly could not figure out how she ended up back in her car.

The heater was on, making it cozy and warm.

However, even after she nailed down the last detail of the arranged marriage with Ronald, Holly's hands still kept shaking.

Ronald seemed pretty happy with how well Holly was taking it, shooting her one last text.

[We didn't raise you without our own interests in mind — but rest assured, we took a lot of thought choosing your fiance. He's more than good enough. You can marry him with a peace of mind.]

[Do you want Melissa and me to say something to Luke? You two are really close, and if he finds out you're suddenly getting married, he's bound to have a hard time letting go.]

That message brought back all of Luke's icy digs.

Tears splashed onto her phone screen.

Click.

Just then, Luke swung the car door open and hopped in.

His eyes caught Holly's tear-streaked face, and he frowned, like he was not the reason for it.

He wrapped her up in a hug, his voice barely showing concern.

"Holly, why the tears? Are you okay?"

Holly stashed her phone behind her back, stone-faced. She looked at the guy she used to be crazy about, feeling nothing like before.

She shook her head, trying to sound cool and detached, "It's no big deal.

"Just got super pumped about the invite to the Ocean Sonata Cup finals."

Luke tensed up holding her.

He had just been talking about that very competition on the phone.

The biggest, most high-stakes piano contest in the capital — the one Cecilia, the daughter of the Porter family, had hoped to win.

However, Holly had been the reigning champion of the Ocean Sonata Cup for four years straight. Along with Cecilia trailing behind her in second place.

"Holly," Luke whispered, his kisses trailing along her neck with a teasing lilt, "Why bother with the Ocean Sonata Cup again? You've won it enough times. How about skipping this one out?

"Stay here with me instead." His words were accompanied by his restless fingers, long and elegant. He began to undo the buttons on her blouse as he spoke.

In the heat of their past moments together, Holly would have given in to Luke's whim, whether they made sense or not.

Luke thought it was just desire clouding her judgment. He could not have been more wrong. Holly was hooked on the fleeting looks of love she thought she saw in his eyes.

However, she saw the truth… He never loved her. She was just a plaything to him.

Luke missed the clarity in Holly's eyes and the icy edge to her smile. "Fine, I won't go," she said calmly. "I'll give up the award."

'And I'll give up on you too,' she thought, but those words stayed unspoken.

Luke's face lit up with happiness, desire flashing in his eyes as his hands traced the curve of Holly's waist. Holly's expression remained unchanged even as her brows drew together, ready to claim she felt sick to avoid his advances.

Then, a rhythmic tapping at the car window interrupted them, followed by a crisp, cool female voice.

"Luke, are you in there? What's going on, are you with your girlfriend?"

Cecilia was taken aback. She shouted, almost losing it. "Didn't you hear what I just said?!"Holly's nothing but a sniveling woman, and did you know she's got many flaws? She even popped pills trying to please Luke's made-up quirks."You're seriously okay with that?" Sabrina gave Cecilia an icy stare. She signaled the bodyguard to escort the unwanted guest out. "Rather than obsessing over someone else's private life, maybe you should take a hard look at yourself and see what kind of person you are. "Even though you're a woman, you're the meanest of them all. "If that's how you are, it looks like the Porter family isn't much better."Forget about any future deals between the Porter family and the Canfields." Cecilia was so shocked by those words, she did not even put up a fight. Luke listened to the woman next to him spewing insults without a single thought. He saw the venomous glare in Cecilia's eyes and felt a wave of disappointment wash over him."I can't believe this is who you are, Cecilia," he said, unable to hide his dismay. The girl he once adored was unrecognizable without the rose-colored glasses of his youth.Did Holly see him as that pathetic then, too? The thought sent a sharp ache through his heart.Cecilia coughed awkwardly, trying to cling to her usual icy poise, but the anger in her eyes made her look out of sorts."I'm the same person I've always been. I just can't stand being treated like this," she insisted."I've never been humiliated like this in my life."Luke's voice dripped with sarcasm. "I'm the one who humiliated you. I'm the one who left you to be the butt of the joke."Why don't you hate me? Why do you hate Holly instead?"Cecilia's hands balled into fists, her eyes swimming with defiance as she scrambled for an excuse."

Cecilia bit down hard on her molars, seizing every opportunity to badmouth Holly."Sir, she's played you."Holly might look like a sad puppy, but behind your back, she's living it up."That's not all. She tried to steal my fiance, too. It's all true, and if you don't believe me, you can just..."Before Cecilia could finish, Yoel cut her off with a flick of his business card."I've got no time for your nonsense." With Holly cradled in his arms, Yoel stood up, his behavior calm and unreadable. "You've insulted my wife. My lawyer will deal with you."Cecilia's legs nearly gave out when she saw the name and title on the card. She stared at Holly, her eyes wide with shock and her lips quivering.Mixed into her surprise was a bitter sense of defeat.Yoel had settled Holly into the car, but she was still reeling from the ordeal. Her clothes were still a mess, although covered by Yoel's jacket.Yoel's gaze softened at the sight of her bruised face. "Does it hurt?"Holly snapped out

Cecilia watched Holly's silence and felt that her anger towards her was not satisfied. She smirked, "What's wrong? Got a guilty conscience? Scared? Bet you never thought I'd track you down."Thought you could just run off abroad and I'd be helpless?"Now that you've lost the Hoffman family's shield, let's see how you stand up to me."Weren't you always at the feet of men?"Go on, strip her down. With all these men around, let's give her a good thrill."With that, Cecilia's laugh was filled with spite and triumph.Holly immediately fought back, her face turning a steely shade of anger, "Cecilia, are you out of your mind? When have I ever come onto Luke?"He was the one who couldn't leave me alone. If you don't believe me, call him out. He's inside."Cecilia paused, then her gaze turned wilder, more venomous. She slapped Holly hard, again and again, screaming in her face."Oh, feeling smug now are we?
