Chapter 3

Author: Sylvia Brook
Within milliseconds, Luke hurriedly shoved Holly away. Her head smacked against the car door, turning her face ghostly white as she winced from the pain.

Luke, looking all kinds of worried, quickly fixed his rumpled clothes and rolled down the window. His eyes darted to Cecilia standing outside.

Luke, who was usually cool-headed, sounded distressed, "Girlfriend? No way, Holly got hurt, I was just helping her out."

Holly looked up to Cecilia's gaze, which was cool, deep, and drop-dead gorgeous.

It was like comparing perfection to her mess and mortification.

She was the polar opposite of Cecilia. Holly was all curves and sweet innocence with a side of allure — a walking daydream for many guys. Cecilia looked like she was sketched by a goddess, she only had graceful lines and an air of untouchable grace.

Holly knew their history, Luke and Cecilia were childhood friends. They went to the same schools and even went abroad together.

To all the old folks, and Holly herself, before they were eighteen, Luke and Cecilia were known as the golden couple.

Somehow, on her eighteenth birthday, Luke picked Holly instead. Holly had figured Luke just was not into Cecilia's vibe.

Then, it hit her. All this time, he did not want to ruin the perfect picture he had of his untouchable goddess.

Cecilia watched Holly catch a beat, a small laugh escaping her. Then she dropped the bomb. "Isn't that Holly? The girl your family's taking care of, right? I get that you two are tight, but you better keep a distance.

"If people start talking, it won't just be a bad look for your folks – I'd lose respect for you, too."

Cecilia's offhand comment sent Luke into a tailspin.

"There's nothing going on between us, I'll never be with someone like her."

His words edged into me like a sharp knife.

Holly's hands were balled into fists so tight that her fingernails nearly pierced the skin of her palms.

Cecilia's face remained cold, her smile not quite reaching her eyes.

Luke turned back, his eyes pleading as he silently begged Holly for help.

Holly fought back the tears, forcing a strained smile that did not quite suit her.

"Ms. Porter, you've got it all wrong.

"Luke and I aren't dating. We're more like siblings than lovers, in fact.

"Besides, I'm about to get married, so there's no way I could be with him."

Cecilia's frosty demeanor softened for a moment at Holly's words.

Her smile warmed when she looked at Luke.

"Luke, it's been too long since I've caught up with your parents. I'll stop by your place later."

With that, Cecilia walked away, her silhouette graceful and dignified, leaving Holly with a mess of insecurities.

A sudden sharp pain snapped Holly back to reality — Luke was gripping her wrist too tightly.

Luke's frown showed his displeasure. "Holly, what's this about an arranged marriage you mentioned?"

Holly's face remained neutral as she gently pulled her hand free.

"It was just a cover story, don't take it to heart."

Luke let out a relieved breath.

Silence then filled the car, heavy and awkward.

Luke awkwardly coughed, ready to justify his earlier reaction. "I hope you're not upset. I just didn't want Cecilia spreading rumors to my parents, so I had to make sure we were on the same page."

Cecilia was taken aback. She shouted, almost losing it. "Didn't you hear what I just said?!"Holly's nothing but a sniveling woman, and did you know she's got many flaws? She even popped pills trying to please Luke's made-up quirks."You're seriously okay with that?" Sabrina gave Cecilia an icy stare. She signaled the bodyguard to escort the unwanted guest out. "Rather than obsessing over someone else's private life, maybe you should take a hard look at yourself and see what kind of person you are. "Even though you're a woman, you're the meanest of them all. "If that's how you are, it looks like the Porter family isn't much better."Forget about any future deals between the Porter family and the Canfields." Luke listened to the woman next to him spewing insults without a single thought. He saw the venomous glare in Cecilia's eyes and felt a wave of disappointment wash over him."I can't believe this is who you are, Cecilia," he said, unable to hide his dismay. The girl he once adored was unrecognizable without the rose-colored glasses of his youth.Did Holly see him as that pathetic then, too? The thought sent a sharp ache through his heart.Cecilia coughed awkwardly, trying to cling to her usual icy poise, but the anger in her eyes made her look out of sorts."I'm the same person I've always been. I just can't stand being treated like this," she insisted."I've never been humiliated like this in my life."Luke's voice dripped with sarcasm. "I'm the one who humiliated you. I'm the one who left you to be the butt of the joke."Why don't you hate me? Why do you hate Holly instead?"Cecilia's hands balled into fists, her eyes swimming with defiance as she scrambled for an excuse."

It's all true, and if you don't believe me, you can just..."Before Cecilia could finish, Yoel cut her off with a flick of his business card."I've got no time for your nonsense." With Holly cradled in his arms, Yoel stood up, his behavior calm and unreadable. "You've insulted my wife. My lawyer will deal with you."Cecilia's legs nearly gave out when she saw the name and title on the card. She stared at Holly, her eyes wide with shock and her lips quivering.Mixed into her surprise was a bitter sense of defeat.Yoel had settled Holly into the car, but she was still reeling from the ordeal. Her clothes were still a mess, although covered by Yoel's jacket.Yoel's gaze softened at the sight of her bruised face. Cecilia watched Holly's silence and felt that her anger towards her was not satisfied. She smirked, "What's wrong? Got a guilty conscience? Scared? Bet you never thought I'd track you down."Thought you could just run off abroad and I'd be helpless?"Now that you've lost the Hoffman family's shield, let's see how you stand up to me."Weren't you always at the feet of men?"Go on, strip her down. With all these men around, let's give her a good thrill."With that, Cecilia's laugh was filled with spite and triumph.Holly immediately fought back, her face turning a steely shade of anger, "Cecilia, are you out of your mind? When have I ever come onto Luke?"He was the one who couldn't leave me alone. If you don't believe me, call him out. He's inside."Cecilia paused, then her gaze turned wilder, more venomous. She slapped Holly hard, again and again, screaming in her face."Oh, feeling smug now are we?
