Chapter 4

Author: Sylvia Brook
Holly did not say a word. She closed her eyes and feigned to be asleep, releasing an air of exhaustion.

Luke fell for the act and realized she was not mad at him. He let out a breath of relief and, with a thoughtful gesture, draped his jacket over her.

Unseen by him, a tear traced a silent path down Holly's cheek.

They arrived back at the Hoffmans' house to find that Cecilia had already made herself at home. She had been openly welcomed by Luke's parents, Ronald and Melissa Gilbert. Melissa could not resist a jab when she saw Holly walk in.

"Look at that, Holly. Luke and Cecilia are just perfect for each other, right?"

Cecilia's eyes flicked to Holly. "You don't look too happy, Holly. Is it because you don't like me, or because you don't like me being with Luke?"

Her words were like a bait, pulling all eyes to Holly, whose face lost a bit of color.

Melissa chuckled, playing peacemaker. "Oh, come on, Holly's the most understanding person here. Way more than Luke.

"And besides, she's already involved with someone from Yverland...

"Hi, Ms. Gilbert," Holly cut in, her voice tinged with urgency, "I'm not feeling well. I think I'll go upstairs and rest."

Melissa's eyes softened, and she nodded. "Of course, dear."

As Holly made her way up the stairs, she could hear Melissa politely suggesting Cecilia stay longer.

Cecilia quickly declined. Luke, on the other hand, was desperately trying to convince Cecilia to extend her stay.

A smirk curled at the edge of Holly's lips.

Whenever Cecilia was around, Luke had eyes for no one else.

So the days rolled on, a full week slipping away.

Luke was pretty much glued to Cecilia's side, but he had not forgotten about Holly. Every night, he would text her, trying to smooth things over.

[Hey Holly, don't be mad. My folks just think Cecilia needs a tour guide since she's new in town.]

He would write on and on.

[Once she's gone, we'll spend some time together. Remember that cool place abroad you wanted to check out?]

[Holly, you're my number one. Always. This thing with Cecilia? It's just for show, for my parents' sake.]

[And hey, you promised not to go to the Ocean Sonata Cup, right? Stick with that. Stay home and we'll have our own time.]

[Holly, I love you.]

Holly had been on the balcony when she read that. If she had not seen Luke tenderly pick up a flower that slipped into Cecilia's hair and tucked it away like a treasured keepsake, she might have kept fooling herself into believing Luke still cared for her.

Holly could not just stay still. She had been out and about with the Hoffmans, getting all her travel documents in order, even personally picking up her certificate.

Melissa and Ronald were really pleased with how well she was handling everything. They were treating her upcoming marriage like she was their own daughter, full of gifts.

Luke did not bat an eyelash when Melissa invited Cecilia to go hiking, even with Holly right there. Melissa, ever the peacemaker, chimed in, "Let's bring Holly along. It'll be good for her to get out before the big day."

With Melissa weighing in, Luke could not exactly say no. So, they left the room together, a reluctant trio.

Holly had thought about playing it cool, making up some excuse to bail. However, there she was, stuck in the middle of it all.

Luke's grip on Holly's wrist was sudden and firm. He pulled her into a hidden corner away from prying eyes.

"Holly…" Luke's voice was urgent, his body radiating a nervous heat as he leaned in close. His voice quivered, betraying a hint of fear, "Are you upset with me? There's nothing going on with Cecilia, I swear. It's all for show, to keep my parents off my back. You believe me, right?"

Cecilia was taken aback. She shouted, almost losing it. "Didn't you hear what I just said?!"Holly's nothing but a sniveling woman, and did you know she's got many flaws? She even popped pills trying to please Luke's made-up quirks."You're seriously okay with that?" Sabrina gave Cecilia an icy stare. She signaled the bodyguard to escort the unwanted guest out. "Rather than obsessing over someone else's private life, maybe you should take a hard look at yourself and see what kind of person you are. "Even though you're a woman, you're the meanest of them all. "If that's how you are, it looks like the Porter family isn't much better."Forget about any future deals between the Porter family and the Canfields." Cecilia was so shocked by those words, she did not even put up a fight. I can't deny it."Mr. Canfield, if this is too much, maybe we should talk about splitting up."However, Yoel surprised her by pulling her close into a protective embrace. When he spoke, his voice seemed constricted, like he was holding back a storm."Holly, can't yo

Luke listened to the woman next to him spewing insults without a single thought. He saw the venomous glare in Cecilia's eyes and felt a wave of disappointment wash over him."I can't believe this is who you are, Cecilia," he said, unable to hide his dismay. The girl he once adored was unrecognizable without the rose-colored glasses of his youth.Did Holly see him as that pathetic then, too? The thought sent a sharp ache through his heart.Cecilia coughed awkwardly, trying to cling to her usual icy poise, but the anger in her eyes made her look out of sorts."I'm the same person I've always been. I just can't stand being treated like this," she insisted."I've never been humiliated like this in my life."Luke's voice dripped with sarcasm. "I'm the one who humiliated you. I'm the one who left you to be the butt of the joke."Why don't you hate me? Why do you hate Holly instead?"Cecilia's hands balled into fists, her eyes swimming with defiance as she scrambled for an excuse."

Cecilia bit down hard on her molars, seizing every opportunity to badmouth Holly."Sir, she's played you."Holly might look like a sad puppy, but behind your back, she's living it up."That's not all. She tried to steal my fiance, too. It's all true, and if you don't believe me, you can just..."Before Cecilia could finish, Yoel cut her off with a flick of his business card."I've got no time for your nonsense." With Holly cradled in his arms, Yoel stood up, his behavior calm and unreadable. "You've insulted my wife. My lawyer will deal with you."Cecilia's legs nearly gave out when she saw the name and title on the card. She stared at Holly, her eyes wide with shock and her lips quivering.Mixed into her surprise was a bitter sense of defeat.Yoel had settled Holly into the car, but she was still reeling from the ordeal. Her clothes were still a mess, although covered by Yoel's jacket.Yoel's gaze softened at the sight of her bruised face. "Does it hurt?"Holly snapped out

Cecilia watched Holly's silence and felt that her anger towards her was not satisfied. She smirked, "What's wrong? Got a guilty conscience? Scared? Bet you never thought I'd track you down."Thought you could just run off abroad and I'd be helpless?"Now that you've lost the Hoffman family's shield, let's see how you stand up to me."Weren't you always at the feet of men?"Go on, strip her down. With all these men around, let's give her a good thrill."With that, Cecilia's laugh was filled with spite and triumph.Holly immediately fought back, her face turning a steely shade of anger, "Cecilia, are you out of your mind? When have I ever come onto Luke?"He was the one who couldn't leave me alone. If you don't believe me, call him out. He's inside."Cecilia paused, then her gaze turned wilder, more venomous. She slapped Holly hard, again and again, screaming in her face."Oh, feeling smug now are we?
