“A… Alpha…”
I was speechless, and try as I might, I couldn’t form a complete sentence. I could only call out to Alpha Holmes, hoping this was one big joke. Tell me this: if whatever was happening here wasn’t a joke, why would Tabitha stand beside him, and he would refer to me as his favorite daughter?
It was an open secret in the Moon Howler Pack that I wasn’t considered part of the Alpha’s household. My room was far away from theirs, and it could as well be described as an upgraded storage room. I didn’t even have the right to sit at the same table with them, much less have decent clothes to wear. How could this be the treatment of the Alpha’s favorite daughter? Even omegas in the pack had it easier than me.
My knees were weak and wobbly, and my ears began buzzing. I couldn’t hear anything else but the chaotic beating of my heart.
How could it end like this? How could Alpha Holmes sacrifice me like a mere cow?
It was okay when they tortured me just for the fun of it. I had no qualms about being treated like his dog, an eyesore he couldn’t rid himself of, and lying down for Tabitha to step on me like a rug didn’t even hurt this much.
This time was different. He wanted to throw me to the ruthless alpha who had always been out for his blood. Alpha Holmes murdered his people, for crying out loud. What peace could I possibly bring after this blatant provocation?
“Celeste, dear, I am so sorry this had to happen. I wish I could take your place, but Father had to be sincere in the offering to the Iron Fang Pack. You are his favorite, after all.” The show wouldn’t be complete without my dear sister’s performance.
I felt the air in my lungs being sucked out of my body, and that was when I came back to my senses. The pain made me understand that I wasn’t dreaming, even though I wished I were.
I found myself in Tabitha’s tight embrace as tears trickled down my cheeks unhindered. She wasn’t a wolfless weakling like me; hence, I could never match her strength.
At the moment, I felt that if I didn’t stop her, my bones could be crushed. It hurt too much.
“I… I… I can’t breathe.” I forced out those words, drawing the attention of all the people in the room. My life depended on it, and I didn’t care if I made Alpha Holmes lose face by screaming like that. His favorite daughter might have sucked it in, but when had Tabitha ever experienced such pain before?
“I… I’m sorry, sis. I got carried away.” She feigned oblivion, making it seem she was just too hesitant to let me go. Tabitha then took my hands while I stood there weakly, my already weak knees wobbly.
I knew what she wanted to do, so, before she could squeeze my hands in punishment, I stepped away from her as if I’d be scalded if I stayed any closer.
“Tabitha, escort your sister to pack her necessities. It’s a long journey to the Iron Fang Pack.” Alpha Holmes commented casually, yet my blood boiled at his dismissive attitude.
How could he speak as if I were just going for a walk in the park? This was most definitely a journey of no return. It was as if he didn’t know the dangers that awaited me in the Iron Fang Pack.
Tsk! Who cares if he knew? Alpha Holmes wouldn’t give a damn if I were shredded to pieces on my arrival.
No. I have been a coward all my life, and I wouldn’t accept this anymore. There was no way in hell I would willingly walk into the devil’s territory. Before anyone could tell what was happening, I quickened my pace, distancing myself further from Tabitha.
Tabitha and her mother were not just going to watch me slip through their hands without doing anything. Hence, I picked up the pace and ran out of the council building. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me until I reached my secret hiding place in the training ground.
If I could wait till the soldiers left, there was a secret passage here that led to the woods. I would run away from this pack and never come back. Running was my only chance of survival, and I wasn’t ready to let it go. I was willing to stake everything on this tiny bit of hope.
It was already frightening that Alpha Horres was widely known to be a beast among beasts, and the people who wronged him and lived to tell the story could be counted on one hand-my father being one of the lucky bastards.
However, this time around, I was the daughter of his nemesis, who caused the death of so many warriors from his pack-that too, unprovoked. What sort of welcome would I expect from such a person?
I didn’t know how long I waited, but it was quite a while. Maybe about an hour or two. I didn’t really take count. However, the sound of numerous footsteps running helter-skelter didn’t escape my ears. They only reduced over time.
“Luna, I don’t think she’s here. We searched the whole training ground, but there’s no sign of her.” I picked up a frantic voice belonging to one of the guards.
Of course, they couldn’t find me. I discovered this hidden room and always kept it a secret from everyone. They should be leaving this place soon, seeing that they couldn’t spot me anywhere. Or so I thought, until I heard the smug voice of my stepmother.
“Celeste Holmes, I know you are here. If you don't show yourself in the next ten breaths, the blood of this wench will be on your hands.”
Oh no!
I couldn’t tell what they did to the hostage, but the person whimpered in agony, causing my heart to be pierced by a thousand invisible blades.
”I won’t force you to come out, but I guess both of you can just die together then.” My stepmother knew very well what my bottom line was.
Nanny Zelda...
Celeste“How is the alpha doing?” It was a tough battle, and I felt at one point that we might lose him for good. Nothing seemed optimistic about his condition, but Lyra was sure he would pull through. Well, it was her belief that saved him. I might have been skeptical, but I was glad Lyra pushed me to do everything possible to save him. I wouldn’t wish to think about the stress we went through to get here, because it looked like a dead end as far as I was concerned. In any case, Alpha Horres had already pulled through the most dangerous phase. Moreover, everything seemed worth it, as Lyra said this wouldn’t happen again. The toxins that invaded his body wouldn’t have any such effect on him anymore if he were to get exposed to them again. Why I wasn’t affected after handling all the toxins in his body was another mystery to me. Lyra should have the best answer to that, and I definitely had plans of asking her about it. Much later, though.“Celeste… Is… Is he okay? Please sa
Celeste“L… Lyra… Lyra, is he d… dead? I didn’t feel him breathing.” I felt a chill run down my spine, even though I didn’t touch him. I didn’t have the heart to confirm my fears, because the alpha looked lifeless. His back rested against a huge tree in the forest, looking more peaceful than I had ever met him. I couldn’t spot his chest rising and falling like a living person’s. Even his body heat couldn’t be felt. It finally dawned on me that the final pain I felt in my ribs that nearly got me passed out was when he got such a ghastly wound in his right side. He was still bleeding from many spots, signaling how badly wounded he was. I could already tell all the places that needed attention on the alpha’s body. However, my feet wouldn’t move. I couldn’t accept it—not when he looked like he was totally out of it already. I just couldn’t take that step. How did he even take on so many people? These corpses didn’t look like real wolves. They were more like a defective product that ne
Celeste“Do you regard the alpha as incompetent, or do you think you can give better orders than him?” Well, I thought the old man was better at laying traps, but I just changed my mind. Beta Kylie was better. He really didn’t give him any way out.“Excuse me!” The old man looked as angry as he could get, but I realized he held back. The killing intent in his eyes was as clear as day, but I couldn’t tell why he masked it so quickly. In any case, Beta Kylie ignored him like he wasn’t even there and quickly turned his attention to me. He looked rather edgy as he spoke so that we could all hear him. Well, he still bowed halfheartedly to the old man. I bet that was his most polite way of greeting him.“The alpha needs you.” Well, that came as a surprise, but I was quite pleased to hear that. No. It wasn’t that I missed the alpha or anything. I wasn’t even worried about him, but I was glad I wouldn’t breathe the same air as this grumpy old man.“Beta Kylie,” The old man blurted out with g
Celeste “Those grapes were harvested by the omegas this morning. They couldn’t distribute them to the ranked members before the attack happened.” Huh? Says who? Besides, why share that information with me? It wasn’t like I stole them. Hmm? “Huh?” A shadow was suddenly cast upon me, and I soon noticed I had the attention of everyone in the shelter. What could this be about? I only took a rest in a corner and decided to eat something. Was it really such a bad idea for me to eat something after everything that happened? Why did this old man fix such a piercing gaze on me, anyway? It was as if I… I… As if I committed an abomination of some sort? I was perplexed and didn’t know whether to continue munching on my fruits or just set them aside. The whole place went into complete silence, and I felt panicky for no reason. I really didn’t do anything wrong… Besides, the silence was extra confusing. “Lyra, what could this be about? Do you know why everyone reacted that way?” She knew a lot
Celeste I didn't know if it was my fearful look or something else, but both Beta Oxley and Slater turned toward the direction my gaze was fixed. She looked totally battered, almost unrecognizable. There were scars all over her face and body, with blood trailing down her forehead. Well, through it all, I could still tell, just like them, that the person who was bleeding from her hands after supposedly hitting the railings for so long was Gamma Rhea. She just rested her head between two iron bars, breathing like every breath was her last. However, she also didn’t fail to glare at me as if she wanted to tear me to shreds. I shouldn’t have thought about that, but the memory of her last visit to the dungeon got me so pissed. I was no saint, so I decided to mess with her as well. At least I knew my limits, something she clearly didn’t. The other crazy wolves began to bang the iron bars when they realized we were paying attention to the others and ignoring them. They wanted to fight, b
Celeste“No. The beta is Alpha Horres’ right-hand man, Lyra. If he finds out I have a wolf… We’re both dead.” Lyra’s disagreement was felt strongly in our mind-link. I already fed Beta Kylie the medicine as she suggested. “If you don’t heal him now, no one leaves here alive.” Huh? Lyra didn’t sound like she was joking.I glanced around the shelter at that moment, already panicking. The situation was truly getting out of hand. Many more infected wolves had their eyes turning different shades of red. Some already began attacking the people beside them, without considering who they were. It was as if they suddenly became mere shells of their former selves. “Soulbane has different effects on different people. The beta possesses a very strong willpower. The poison starts eating deep into his soul as soon as it attacks. He would get out of control if we didn't save him now.” Oh, my goodness! “Do we really need to expose the truth to the second most dangerous person in the pack?”I alrea
HorresThis girl had a way of pushing me to insanity. The most annoying factor about it all was that she didn’t even need to speak or do anything. Even her mere presence always lit a fire within me. I couldn’t keep my d*ck in check before her arrival, and right now, all I could do was take deep and
HorresWhy was I not able to calm down? I’d taken the antidote to the aphrodisiac, yet it didn’t do a thing for me. I knew it wouldn’t make me return to normal at once, but I should have been able to stop the most troublesome part by now. Instead of feeling relief, my groin was rather on fire. Did I
CelesteLet’s just try to… Run… As I contemplated this in my mind, I decided to take to my heels, but the beta wasn’t ready to let me go just yet. Did he notice that I was lying?“Stay right there, young lady!”“Okay.” I responded so fast that the beta gave me a once-over. I could bet with everythi
Celeste“I was summoned by the alpha.” Oh my goodness, Lyra! Couldn’t she come up with any random person's name to use other than the devil himself? Shit! How was I to talk my way out of this? It was the devil himself we were talking about here. The man who treated his pack members with so much car
