003: Running away

Celeste

“A… Alpha…”

I was speechless, and try as I might, I couldn’t form a complete sentence. I could only call out to Alpha Holmes, hoping this was one big joke. Tell me this: if whatever was happening here wasn’t a joke, why would Tabitha stand beside him, and he would refer to me as his favorite daughter?

It was an open secret in the Moon Howler Pack that I wasn’t considered part of the Alpha’s household. My room was far away from theirs, and it could as well be described as an upgraded storage room. I didn’t even have the right to sit at the same table with them, much less have decent clothes to wear. How could this be the treatment of the Alpha’s favorite daughter? Even omegas in the pack had it easier than me.

My knees were weak and wobbly, and my ears began buzzing. I couldn’t hear anything else but the chaotic beating of my heart.

How could it end like this? How could Alpha Holmes sacrifice me like a mere cow?

It was okay when they tortured me just for the fun of it. I had no qualms about being treated like his dog, an eyesore he couldn’t rid himself of. Lying down for Tabitha to step on me like a rug didn’t even hurt this much.

This time was different. He wanted to throw me to the ruthless alpha who had always been out for his blood. Alpha Holmes murdered his people, for crying out loud. What peace could I possibly bring after this blatant provocation?

“Celeste, dear, I am so sorry this had to happen. I wish I could take your place, but Father had to be sincere in the offering to the Iron Fang Pack. You are his favorite, after all.” The show wouldn’t be complete without my dear sister’s performance.

I felt the air in my lungs being sucked out of my body, and that was when I came back to my senses. The pain made me understand that I wasn’t dreaming, even though I wished I were.

I found myself in Tabitha’s tight embrace as tears trickled down my cheeks unhindered. She wasn’t a wolfless weakling like me; hence, I could never match her strength.

At the moment, I felt that if I didn’t stop her, my bones could be crushed at any moment. It hurt too much.

“I… I… I can’t breathe.” I forced out those words, drawing the attention of all the people in the room. My life depended on it, and I didn’t care if I made Alpha Holmes lose face by screaming like that. His favorite daughter might have sucked it in, but when had Tabitha ever experienced such pain before?

“I… I’m sorry, sis. I got carried away.” She feigned oblivion, making it seem she was just too hesitant to let me go. Tabitha then took my hands while I stood there weakly, my already weak knees wobbly.

I knew what she wanted to do, so, before she could squeeze my hands in punishment, I stepped away from her as if I’d be scalded if I stayed any closer.

“Tabitha, escort your sister to pack her necessities. It’s a long journey to the Iron Fang Pack.” Alpha Holmes commented casually, yet my blood boiled at his dismissive attitude.

How could he speak as if I were just going for a walk in the park? This was most definitely a journey of no return. It was as if he didn’t know the dangers that awaited me in the Iron Fang Pack.

Tsk! Who cares if he knew? Alpha Holmes wouldn’t give a damn if I was shredded to pieces on my arrival.

No. I have been a coward all my life, and I wouldn’t accept this anymore. There was no way in hell I would willingly walk into the devil’s territory. Before anyone could tell what was happening, I quickened my pace, distancing myself further from Tabitha.

Tabitha and her mother were not just going to watch me slip through their hands without doing anything. Hence, I picked up pace and ran out of the council building. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me until I reached my secret hiding place in the training ground.

If I could wait till the soldiers left, there was a secret passage here that led to the woods. I would run away from this pack and never come back. Running was my only chance of survival, and I wasn’t ready to let it go.  I was willing to stake everything on this tiny bit of hope.

It was already frightening that Alpha Horres was widely known to be a beast among beasts, and the people who wronged him and lived to tell the story could be counted on one hand-my father being one of the lucky bastards.

However, this time around, I was the daughter of his nemesis, who caused the death of so many warriors from his pack-that too, unprovoked. What sort of welcome would I expect from such a person?

I didn’t know how long I waited, but it was quite a while. Maybe about an hour or two. I didn’t really take count. However, the sound of numerous footsteps running helter-skelter didn’t escape my ears. They only reduced over time.

“Luna, I don’t think she’s here. We searched the whole training ground, but there’s no sign of her.” I picked up a frantic voice belonging to one of the guards.

Of course, they couldn’t find me. I discovered this hidden room and always kept it a secret from everyone. They should be leaving this place soon, seeing that they couldn’t spot me anywhere. Or so I thought, until I heard the smug voice of my stepmother.

“Celeste Holmes, I know you are here. If you don't show yourself in the next ten breaths, the blood of this wench will be on your hands.”

Oh no!

I couldn’t tell what they did to the hostage, but the person whimpered in agony, causing my heart to be pierced by a thousand invisible blades.

”I won’t force you to come out, but I guess both of you can just die together then.” My stepmother knew very well what my bottom line was.

Celeste“If it’s not the accomplice we were looking for.” Holy crap! Its her. How… How did she know Maita was here? Those words and the sound of that voice made my soul fly out of my body. Her whole presence traumatised me for days. It was only a few days ago that she tried to kill me, after all. Wait! Don’t tell me I was being monitored all along. Did they set a trap and Maita walked right into it? “This is seriously not what it looks like. Maita only brought me some food. Please, don’t implicate her in all this. She had nothing to do with anything.” I could only plead with the she-wolf, since Maita belonged to her pack, but she wasn’t getting any of it.“You know, you should be lucky there is an iron bar separating you and I right now. Who the fuck do you think you are to tell me who to implicate and who not to? Did I not just catch her in the act of plotting with you?” Shit! How did it get to this? “Lyra, please say something. How can we save Maita from ending up like me.” Looki

CelesteI felt my eyes watering at her words. I would have been a liar if I said her words didn’t move me.She was right. There wasn’t a single fact pointing to me, apart from the item being discovered in my room. Did I even have any place to call my room? Tsk! Well, the alpha of this pack chose to believe that I faked my three-day-long unconsciousness. That was the only logical explanation for whatever happened, and he chose to believe it without a second thought. Not that he would even give me the chance to explain myself.Well, I wouldn’t blame him if I were in his shoes. Alpha Holmes was a demon, and anyone associated with him couldn’t possibly be a saint, right?“I like this one. She has a nice head on that neck of hers. And quite a good heart too. I think she was once where you are right now. She knows how it feels.” The heck! I thought Lyra said she wouldn’t be up in a long time. This arrogant wolf of mine has only been sleeping after she healed me. I couldn’t tell what else

Celeste Anger. Raw and unadulterated anger. That was what I felt from Alpha Horres. He always looked pissed or disgusted whenever he laid eyes on me, but this time was different. This anger was so raw that I feared I might be torn to shreds if I dared to breathe carelessly in his presence. The dungeon was one place where I experienced hell in this pack, but it might as well be the safest place for me right now. Anywhere away from the alpha would be safer than lingering in his presence. As I was thrown onto the cold floor of the dungeon, I winced in pain, only to hear the cell doors being locked from behind me. The warrior didn’t even spare me a single glance. I bet he would have severed my head from my neck if the alpha had ordered him to.I didn’t make a single sound as I felt him step away in anger. He was as pissed as his alpha. That’s for sure. How could I explain it to all of them? I didn’t do it. Somebody set me up and did a fraking good job at that.I just stood there looking

Horres My blood boiled when I confirmed my train of thought. My seal was missing. This was the one thing that authenticated my secret messages. The seal was also used to endorse the decrees that came from me. All official documents were endorsed by my seal. It was my symbol of authority, yet it was stolen just like that. How would I explain the loss of the seal when I was about to have visitors in the pack in no time? Wouldn’t this mean I would be caught off guard? “Alpha, could you calm down?” Oxley began to speak, but I couldn’t stop myself from snapping at him.“No. Don’t tell me to calm down, Oxley!” I continued to move in circles, and I bet I was making him dizzy. However, there was no way I could calm down in this situation. “Go and search Kylie’s room. Everywhere he passed today must be turned upside down. I want that seal before nightfall.” “Yes, Alpha.” Oxley was about to step out when a thought crossed my mind. “Get a few members of the Elite Team. You lead one group, an

HorresI walked steadily toward my room, not sparing Beta Kylie a second glance. I didn’t bother asking him why he was in the clinic, because he usually did this in the past. He would come to the infirmary and try to help out with the sick. Before now, I thought he was just too nice to the pack members, trying to relate better with them. However, seeing him here now just made me realize that I may have missed too many things in the past. No matter how he lived to help out in the clinic, he wouldn’t have been in a hurry to come here today if there was nothing peculiar he wanted to do.How could I have been this stupid? How long has he been this sneaky without my knowledge?“Alpha, any orders?” I could tell Oxley had the same feeling as me. I couldn’t explain why I could tell what he was thinking, but I knew we were both on the same page. “Get some wolves to watch him. I mean, the ones he wouldn’t suspect. I want him watched around the clock.” My words were brief, but I knew Oxley got

Horres“Alpha, I have good news.” Why wouldn’t this beta of mine ever walk around with his mouth shut? He always had news, whether good or bad. There was always something for him to report.I kept my gaze on the document before me, trying to understand what could be wrong with the report. My gut kept pointing to something very wrong with the report, but no matter how I checked, I couldn’t tell what was out of place. The report looked seamless, and everything would have been okay if I hadn’t been feeling uneasy about it. The information here indicated that all the groups we sent out to get various goods for the winter were safe and sound. The ones who were a little closer to the Moon Howler Pack even sent a positive report back through a messenger raven. How could I tell what could be wrong if I couldn’t even spot any flaw in the report? Where would I start looking for something I couldn’t pinpoint? They were scattered everywhere, for crying out loud.Oxley was even supposed to be w
