Chapter 7

Author: Cecily
Jasmine's call came in at that very moment.

Nicholas helped Quinn up. He rejected the call after giving it a glance.

"Why didn't you tell me earlier, Quinn? I'll bring you to the hospital at once!" His phone rang again as soon as he spoke.

The shrill ringing of the ringtone pierced through their ears, and Nicholas rejected the call once again.

"I'm fine, there's no need to go to the hospital. I'll be alright after some rest—" Before Quinn could finish speaking, she saw his phone lighting up again.

She pushed his hands away and said, "Just take the call. It might be something urgent from the company."

"Sit down and rest for a bit then, Quinn." Nicholas helped Quinn over to the couch before walking over to the side to take the call.

However, gone was his usual gentle tone. He spoke coldly, "What's wrong? Why are you calling me relentlessly? I've already made arrangements for the best doctors and caretakers for your father. You don't have to be so worried."

It was Jasmine again.

Quinn leaned against the couch and closed her eyes, exhausted.

Nicholas soon ended the call and returned to her side to take care of her.

Nicholas did not go to the company for the next few days. He stayed at home to prepare for the wedding.

Quinn's gaze darkened as she watched him clutching onto her custom-made wedding dress, twirling happily before her.

"I'm so happy, Quinn. Tomorrow's the day I finally get to marry you!" he exclaimed.

Looking at Nicholas' smiling face, her gaze inadvertently landed on the wedding dress.

She had received a video just three hours ago. In that video, Jasmine was wearing the same wedding dress, her arms intimately wrapped around him.

"Get some rest early tonight, Quinn," Nicholas said.

Quinn pretended to fall asleep, noticing the way he had slipped out. She knew he was saving the night of his wedding eve for Jasmine.

She quietly got up and began packing her few important belongings. She did not take a single gift Nicholas had gifted her all these years.

After that, she quietly waited until dawn broke. She then headed to the wedding venue.

Most of the guests had arrived. Quinn stood by the entrance, swapping out her and Nicholas' wedding photo for one of him and Jasmine.

At that moment, Nicholas hurried down from the car. "I was late because of the bad traffic along the way, Quinn. Let's get changed now!"

Jasmine, who was dressed just like a bride, followed closely behind him. She met Quinn's gaze with a hint of provocation.

Nicholas, who was anxious and in a hurry, did not notice the wedding photo by the entrance.

He linked arms with Quinn and pulled her to the dressing room. While he was changing, she noticed the lovebites that even his thick foundation couldn't quite cover.

Nicholas asked, "Why aren't you getting changed yet, Quinn? The wedding is about to start."

Quinn smiled at him and shook her head. She said softly, "I'm not in a hurry."

Nicholas was distracted by her smile. Although she was smiling gently, he was somehow feeling uneasy deep down.

He only realized that Quinn was nowhere near ready once he was done getting ready.

Amidst Nicholas' confusion, she reached a hand out to him. He took her hand, and she brought him out.

Under the watchful eyes of many guests, Quinn let go of his hand to play the video.

Nicholas shyly turned around, yet he froze when he saw images of him and Jasmine on the screen.

Panicked, he looked at Quinn and was about to say something. She interrupted him and said, "I'm here as a friend to attend your wedding with Jasmine today."

Nicholas felt his knees go weak, almost collapsing to the ground. He finally understood why he had felt uneasy earlier.

Although Quinn had been smiling, her gaze was cold. She was looking at him as if looking at a stranger.

"What are you talking about, Quinn? Today is our wedding day!" Nicholas walked over to her and grabbed her arm, trying to make one last effort.

"No, today is your and Jasmine's wedding day." Quinn gestured for him to look at the invitation card and photos in the venue. Only then did he realize that Quinn's name and photos had been switched to Jasmine's.

Nicholas said, "That's impossible! Something's wrong… Quinn—"

However, his voice was covered by the recording played in the video. It was the conversation he had with Jasmine on the day of his engagement.

"You're the only one for me even if I marry her, Jasmine," came his voice.

Nicholas' mind went blank that very moment. He realized that Quinn had known about everything from the start.

Glancing at Quinn, who was in front of him, he tightly gripped her arm. Only one thought remained in his head—he couldn't let her leave.

She pushed his hand away. With a calm and gentle smile, she said, "We're done, Nicholas. I wish you a happy marriage with Jasmine."

Jasmine was ultimately sentenced to prison for embezzlement, illegal fundraising, and other crimes. Nicholas visited her on her first day behind bars. He looked at her coldly."I wasn't going to let you off so easily, so you should thank your lucky stars you ended up in prison. Pray that you spend a few more years in there—I don't know what I'd do to you otherwise," he said. His icy gaze made her hysterically shriek, "You knew that old fart was bad news all along, didn't you? You deliberately made me fall into his clutches!"Nicholas had introduced Jasmine to a director before leaving Heathridge. She'd happily gone to meet the director, but the man had taken advantage of her. She'd thought Nicholas had been in the dark about the whole thing, so she hadn't dared to tell him about it after it had happened. She hadn't wanted him to scorn her. Only now did she realize he'd set her up!"Of course. Did you think I would be kind enough to help you? I wouldn't have lost Quinn if not for y

Jasmine suddenly started laughing as she clutched her cheek. "I would rather take such a roundabout way to get at Quinn than spread those videos of you, Nicholas. How can you treat me like this when I love you so deeply?"What is it about her that bewitches you so? Have you forgotten how you were the one to seek me out when I returned to Heathridge? You wanted me to join your company, and you told me you've never forgotten about me. I wouldn't be in this predicament if not for your sake, Nicholas!"She was about to lose her mind, but Nicholas didn't take pity on her because of that. On the contrary, his hatred for her grew."Don't think I don't know you orchestrated our so-called chance reunion. Also, wasn't I your whole reason for returning to Heathridge?" he spat.A hint of diffidence flashed in Jasmine's eyes at having her lies exposed.Nicholas continued, "I'll give you one last chance, Jasmine. Step up and explain everything—settle this matter, and I can let you off the hook

Nicholas could only stand by and watch as things played out. He'd already seen through Gabriel's feelings for Quinn the last time they'd seen each other, so he wasn't surprised by this. What surprised him was that Quinn hadn't evaded Gabriel. She'd allowed him to hold and kiss her. His mind went blank. He couldn't believe what had just happened."Stay away from her! You don't deserve to touch her!" he snapped. He charged at Gabriel with a raised fist, wanting to hit him.Gabriel grabbed his arm with one hand while holding Quinn with the other. "What right do you have to stick your nose in my business with Quinn? Who do you think you are?"He flung Nicholas aside. The latter stumbled and fell to the ground, scratching his palm in the process. Nicholas looked at Quinn, his eyes turning red with grievance as he held up his palm. "It hurts, Quinn."Whenever he'd gotten injured in the past, she would gently tend to his wounds."You deserve it. Drop the pitiful act!" Gabriel stood befo

Nicholas' gaze no longer had the tenderness it had once held. To him, Jasmine was no more than a nemesis now.He knew she'd come bearing ill intentions when his assistant had called and told him she'd followed him. He didn't expect her to pull such a dirty trick—she'd secretly recorded them together!"I don't want to hurt you, Nicholas. I just don't understand why you're being so stubborn when things have already turned out like this. I promise I won't cause any more trouble for Quinn as long as you marry me."Besides, you and I were together before you met Quinn. How can you betray our bond for her sake?" Jasmine cried. Her eyes turned red, and she held Nicholas' shoulders tightly as she shook him.He scoffed and shoved her hands off. "You're the one who betrayed us first, Jasmine. Have you forgotten the money you took from my parents?""How do you know Quinn wasn't with you for your money, then?" Jasmine grew agitated. She looked at Nicholas pleadingly as tears glimmered in her

Nicholas ran after Quinn when he saw her get into the car to leave. She didn't stop for him, though. He watched as the car drove off into the distance, and he tripped and fell. The ring on his hand fell off and rolled into one of the bushes by the roadside. He immediately scrambled to his feet to search through them. The branches and thorns left scratches on his hands, but he didn't seem to notice them. After a long time, Nicholas clutched the ring after finding it and laughed in agitation. Slowly, tears streamed down his face as he laughed. He could find the ring again, but could he do the same for Quinn's love?Meanwhile, Quinn parked the car outside Steven's apartment building. Gabriel stood before Steven, looking glum and despondent as the latter berated him. "Your parents called and said you only have three days to tell them what they want to hear."If you can't, you're going home to marry the person they've picked for you!" With that, Steven glanced at Quinn out of the corner

Quinn stepped forward to say something when she saw how frenzied Nicholas was, but Gabriel beat her to it. The crisp sound of a slap rang out, seeming even more pronounced by the quiet riverside.Nicholas gaped at Gabriel in disbelief while cupping his face. This was the first time someone had laid a hand on him in his life.Gabriel snorted disdainfully at the look on his face. "Quinn and I have known each other since birth—what do the few years you two had together mean compared to that?"Besides, isn't Jasmine Shaw your beloved? How can you be shameless enough to want Quinn back when you destroyed her for Jasmine's sake? What's your relationship with Quinn now?"Nicholas parted his lips at that but couldn't say a word. What was his relationship with Quinn? He was supposed to be her fiancé, but she no longer wanted him.He looked at Quinn tearfully at that thought and showed her his red cheek. "If hitting me will help appease you, I'm fine letting him slap me as many times as you

Nicholas couldn't help imagining the scene of his reunion with Quinn. Would she be overjoyed to see him? It had been ages since he'd last seen her, and he missed her dearly. As he was about to arrive, he pulled out a wedding band and stroked it carefully. He'd genuinely looked forward to marrying Quinn when he'd gone abroad to have the rings custom-made.If not for Jasmine's sudden return, he and Quinn would have been happy.A tear suddenly rolled down his face and dropped onto the ring. He held it tighter. This was the only ring left from the pair he'd had made, so he couldn't lose it.Nicholas was lost upon arriving at his destination. He'd only found out which flight Quinn had taken; he had no idea where exactly she was. How was he going to find her in such a large city?Suddenly, he caught sight of someone holding up a banner to welcome their guests. An idea hit him.…Quinn was reading some documents at home when she received a call from Gabriel. "Someone has confessed thei

Gabriel's face and body were covered in mud and soil from the mountain. His sharp suit was dirty and torn, and his arms were covered in scratches from rocks and branches. He hadn't done anything to them, though.A trace of joy flashed in his eyes when he saw Quinn awake. He'd never cried even when Steven had chased after him to scold him, yet he burst into aggrieved tears then. "I'm never making you catch the sunrise with me anymore."She reached out to wipe away his tears and smiled gently. "Don't worry, I won't die. How did you get me down the mountain?"No ambulance could've gotten up the mountain because of its treacherous slopes. It looked like Gabriel had gone through a lot to get her to the foot of the mountain."I don't know. My mind went blank, and all I could think about was not wanting you to die." He couldn't stop his hands from trembling at the thought of the perilous situation. He would've spent the rest of his life in pain and regret if something really had happened

"What did you say?" Quinn asked."Nothing. Let's go back down," Gabriel answered.Quinn was in a good mood on the way back. She didn't notice the glumness in Gabriel's eyes. When they were halfway down the mountain, she received a call. Nicholas' agitated voice rang out as soon as she answered it."I know this is your number, Quinn! I have something very important to tell you—I'll find you, no matter where you've gone. If you don't come back, I'll seek out your friends and professors!" he cried.Rage surged in Quinn at those words. She was about to say something when a stabbing pain suddenly struck her heart, making her breathing speed up. She was about to collapse when Gabriel caught her and held her up."Is your heart disease acting up? I'll take you to the hospital!" His voice trembled as he hoisted her onto his back and made his way down the mountain. "Don't scare me, okay? You can't let anything happen to yourself!"We made a pact when we were kids—you said you would marry m
